ISLA MUJERES, 7 de septiembre.- This has the same info as previously translated with the addition of noting that a 60 hp outboard engine has a retail cost of over 80,000 pesos, but with this subsidy from the state and federal governments, it will cost the fisherman 30,000 pesos.

De Isla Mujeres trasladan la imagén tallada en madera, a un nicho de Isla Contoy, donde se oficia una misa en ofrenda de los hombres del mar

Manuel VALDEZ
ISLA MUJERES, 7 de septiembre.- There were ~60 boats in the procession, including boats from the fishermen cooperatives, tour boats, and individual's boats. There was some dissatisfaction concerning the departure because the organizers had expected the Port Authority to prevent people from assembling and boarding boats before the procession had come from the church. About fifty boats of families and friends had departed before the boat with the Virgin left, the“Halcón Maya”, which therefore was accompanied by only a few boats.
Our Lady of Charity del Cobre is venerated in Santiago de Cuba every 8th of September. She is the patron saint of fishermen, and during the rest of lobster season,  they keep the wooden image in a niche  on "Bird Island". The procession is a fourteen year old tradition. (Isla Contoy is also know as  Isla de los Pájaros).

    Náuticos, optimistas sobre el clima

    0 07 de septiembre de 2013

Por Carlos Gasca > Quequi.-  Tourism service providers hope the climate will allow them to close out September with good statistics, although they admit the risk of storms, noting the most significant phenomena were Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 and Hurricane Wilma in 2005. They had a good run in July, and low season began for the nautical tour providers on August 25, when business dropped by 50 percent. They expect the weather to cooperate and allow them to operate this next month.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are nesting on the eastern beaches in the wee hours. There are Tortugranja personnelmonitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are blue and red crabs migrate to & from the sea during the full moons, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle & in Sac Bajo
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

*** Isla Mujeres Student Scholarship program ***

Several students graduated or will be soon so there have been new students added to the Isla Mujeres Student Scholarship program. With the new students there is a need for more sponsors. There are two levels of sponsorship - $30 or $55 a month.

Citlali is a student starting college. She has one sponsor at the $30 level, but we would like to support her at $150/month, so need between 3 and 5 more sponsors.

Brayan is a new high school student. We have one sponsor - at $30 level, so we need one more sponsor. Brayan's mom is Cecelia, the heavy-set woman who is active with the bead ladies - friendly and has taken some English classes, you may have met her.

If want more information about the program or want to become a sponsor please message me. This is a great way to give back to the people of Isla Mujeres as well as life changing for the students and their families.
David Daniel  Sunset on Isla is always special - and this one was no exception — with Diane White Daniel  at El Varadero.

  1. Thanks for adding my FB post about the scholarship program. The more ways the word get spread the more likely we are to find new sponsors.
