MAYOR JUAN CARRILLO SOBERANIS INAUGURATES SABATINA BASEBALL LEAGUE

The Mayor inaugurated the  Sabatina Municipal Baseball League “José Luis ‘Triko’ García” at the “El Pescador” baseball field. This league was founded in 1999 and reactivated in 2016, at the beginning of this administration, after six years of inactivity.
The Mayor, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, presented uniforms to the players and spoke about his commitment and support for sports activities, which improve health and quality of life. He also thanked municipal and state agencies who have assisted, including the Institute of Sports and Recreation, directed by Natanael Gallegos Salinas.
The league will consist of five teams, Toros Campeón, Carniceros, Sol Zorro Oaxacos, Trikos y Generación 85, who are managed by  Iván Lugo, Manuel Alcocer, Ariel Santizo, Adrián Barragán y Héctor Gil, respectively.
The Mayor said, "In Isla Mujeres different sports are practiced, but definitely one of the favorite among the islanders is baseball. I encourage the players and managers to give their best in each game, always remembering that the priority is to have fun and have healthy times together, because they are an example for the children and pride of their families and fans."
Names are given of officials in attendance and of Ariel "El Picho" Magana who was important baseball promoter in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, and Yucatan.  The mayor has worked in a coordinated manner with the three levels of government for the benefit of sports activities in Isla Mujeres.

The Cahuameros team of Isla Mujeres Nueva Generación, will travel to Playa del Carmen on Saturday, where they will face Los Dorados, who achieved a significant advantage by winning the last two matches in Isla Mujeres.
The Isla Mujeres team must win both games to remain in this Final competition of the Major Basketball League. If they lose one game, they will be automatically eliminated. If they win on Saturday, the second game will be on Sunday. They have two camiones (vans/buses) provided without cost to transport them from Gran Puerto at 6:30 and will return immediately after the game, for those who wish to go.

Two sailboats dropped out of the Sol al Sol Regatta
Dos veleros se retiran.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Two sailboats dropped out of the Sol al Sol Regatta, leaving only six in the competition. The "Midnight Sun" suffered a rupture of its hull when it hit another boat in the bay of St. Petersburg. At night the boat "I Believe" returned to port due to problems, which are apparently from damage, according to members of the organizing committee. The former boat was the only one in the Non Spinnaker Class and the latter boat had been competing in Class B.
The damage to the Midnight Sun wasn't serious, and they later tried to have it repaired at "Longnoat" Key, and returned to St Petersburg to have it repaired at a shipyard, apparently. It is not known why the "I Believe" dropped out, but it is presumed it was because of some damage.
An account is given of their positions yesterday afternoon.
You can see their current positions HERE.
At 11am, Tattoo remains in the lead and in first place among the Class A boats, while last year's champion, "After You" is in first place for Class B. "Equinox" is in last place (and second in Class B). Among the other Class A boats, "It's Only Money" is in third and "My Time" is in fourth, so I'm guessing "50/50" is in second but my cursor isn't picking it out of the 'pack' in the graphic.

Celebrating 500 years of Catholic faith
Celebrarán los 500 años de la llegada de la fe [+] Ver masFull article at this link
On May 19 and 20, a week of spiritual activities will culminate with the arrival of Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo, bishop of the Cancun-Chetumal prelature, who will inaugurate a historic museum in a wing of the parish of the Immaculate Conception.
The inauguration is scheduled for May 19th at 7pm, according to parish priest Raul Sanchez Alonso who was supervising the works of adaptation of the space and the painting of the property.

These events will commemorate the arrival of the Catholic faith in Isla Mujeres, remembering that in March it was 500 years since the arrival of the expedition of Francisco Hernandez de Cordova in Isla Mujeres, who came from Cuba in 1517, and the subsequent construction of what would be the first Hispanic convent in America, in the continental zone of Boca Iglesia.
A maritime procession was initially planned up to the ruins of the church, but no authorization was given by the government because the land is in the hands of private individuals. There is a plan to postpone the event until next year, if the situation is more favorable then.
The schedule for the religious conference will be released on Monday and will include speakers and singers from other states in Mexico and from the Dominican Republic, with events in the evening in front of the church, on the Town Square, including singer songwriter Roy Mendoza.

North Beach is returning to normal
Playa Norte vuelve a la normalidad [+] Ver masFull article at this link

The navigation channel in front of Playa Centro (Posada Beach) is recovering and it appears there is no need to relocate the buoy line, which was released from the sand a few days ago, because the south winds have moved the sand towards Playa Norte/North Beach. The lifeguards continue to restrict swimming in the boat area, and you can see that the buoys are already about five meters out in the water, where it was just recently sand.
An official with the Harbor Master's office predicted that these winds will benefit North Beach, and that the sand that accumulated by the Posada Beach will move further north to fill in the area near Chichis. This area suffered erosion with the deterioration of the seven 'whales' (geotubes) that were installed in 2007, but were not maintained and became torn and empty. A company has begun an installation (of 'palladium'?) in the area that is gaining sand, and they hope to regain that area of about 10,000 square meters.
The winds from the south are expected to continue for the next three days and they are common in this season, which should allow the accumulated sand to move and eliminate the need to move the buoys.

Hacienda Mundaca palapa cordoned off by Civil Protection agency
Protección Civil validó denuncia de palapa dañada+] Ver masFull article at this link
The head of Civil Protection explained that they cordoned off the palapa of the Mundaca Hacienda due to weakening of the structure because some of the poles which were used are not suitable and cannot support the weight of the roof. It is recalled that the roof of the palapa at Iguana Park fell in October, shortly after an evening event. It is much older than the Mundaca palapa which was built two years ago for about 15 million pesos.
After the Iguana Park palapa roof fell last October, the Mundaca palapa was closed, but then people were allowed to use it again. However, lately with the south winds, it was cordoned off again. There had been people exercising inside and tourists visiting it.
There have been comments about the poor quality of construction of both of these palapas, especially from builders who have constructed larger palapas on the properties of the families Povedano Moguel, and Lima Fernández, among others.
In the case of the Mundaca palapa, around a dozen main poles were used and one of them was already giving out under the weight. When Civil Protection became aware of the danger, City personnel placed a "strut" to avoid collapse. It's been half a year now and there has been no announcement about funds for updating the palapa.

This is an article dated April 27 about the position of the eight regatta boats  (which is probably a typo. The boats departed Friday, April 28). You can follow their progress HERE.   It notes their relatives should begin arriving Saturday
Here is what I wrote this morning....The Sol al Sol Regatta only has eight boats this year & they are due to arrive on Sunday, or possibly Monday, if these winds cause delays. They left Friday and you can track them here  as they cross the ~500 nautical miles of the Gulf.
The basketball game (Sailors vs Isleños) is scheduled for 7pm on Wednesday at the downtown court, but since that is being reconstructed, I would guess it may be at the Convention Center.
Participants for the 48th edition of the Regatta Amigos will gather at Buho's restaurant at 10am on Friday, and go to the boats a half hour later. These exceptional students from ages 8-12 will begin their Regatta around the island at noon.
Last year's Sol al Sol winner, "After You" is competing with “50/50”, “Equinox”, “Its Only Money”, “My Time”, “Tattoo”, “Midnight Sun”, and “I Believe”. However, on the tracking page it appears the last two didn't leave port.

City Council Decision Regarding Red Cross First Aid Courses
At the 34th Regular Session of the City Council, they decided unanimously that the Mexican Red Cross will be the only institution providing first aid training to all the companies in the municipality. The Mayor said, "For more than 30 years the Mexican Red Cross of Isla Mujeres has provided its services in this locality, always thinking about the good of all the islanders. Now, among these services is the provision of first aid courses, through which they can obtain some of the necessary resources to continue assisting the inhabitants of this municipality for free. "
"The Mexican Red Cross offers a professional course, taught by technicians who are properly trained in medical emergencies, who prioritize the health of people and know that with the proper delivery of first aid can save lives," said Juan Carrillo Soberanis.
This decision is part of the actions that the municipal government has taken to maintain the safety and well-being of the islanders, in addition to supporting this important institution which has provided its services to the citizens of Isla Mujeres for many years.

Young islander speaks out against discrimination
http://grupopiramide.com.mx/vivi-discriminacion-no-me-gust…/
Malaika Maisha Garrido Dietrich is a 12 year old from Isla Mujeres who attends César Mendoza Santana elementary school and speaks 3 languages. She wore  her hair in an immaculate bun as she opened the session of the Children's Parliament of the State Congress with a speech against discrimination. In an interview, she explained that she has personally experienced discrimination and has seen it affect her family.

She began with a poem Nezahualcóyotl (which is on the 100 peso note with his portrait):
I love the song of the mockingbird,
Bird of four hundred voices,
I love the color of the jade stone
And the enervating perfume of flowers,
But most of all I love my brother: man.

She closed her speech with a quote by Martin Luther King: 'We have learned to fly like birds, to swim like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living as brothers.'"

She attended the session as the child legislator for District 1 and allowed Grupo Pirámide to interview her during a recess:

-How did you prepare for this experience?

"I had the support of many people, especially my mom and my dad. I had support from my teacher and one of my aunts."

-Why did you talk about discrimination?

"I've experienced discrimination. I didn't like it and I wanted to raise my voice."

-Tell us about it ...

"It was very sad. They've made very bad comments and once they dragged me down onto the floor. They've even discriminated against my mother because of where she comes from. My mom is German and my dad is Mexican; I am half German and half Mexican, so I speak three languages: Spanish, English and German."

-What did you think of this experience and which legislator helped you?

"I thought this experience was super. I loved it. It is a great opportunity and I'm very happy to have been a part of the Congress of Quintana Roo. I worked mostly with Alberto Vado Morales."

-What do you like to do in Isla Mujeres?

"I love Isla Mujeres.... the sea, school, my family, and I am enjoying my childhood."

-What message would you give to other children?

"Involvement in politics is important because you can raise your voice about an issue. If you have suffered something, you can raise your voice for someone to do something."

In the clip, she says she's happy to be there, representing District 1 and that the fight against discrimination is very important because it exists in the schools, streets, and many other places in Mexico & that we are all equal, all human, and all living together in a world that is full of discrimination.

Reviewing whale shark tour boats
Cumplirán condiciones de seguridad n.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The Harbor Master's office has inspected 50 percent of the whale shark tour boats to ensure that they have the safety equipment which is required by law, and the other boats will be reviewed before the start of the season. Since the end of 2016 and the start of 2017, the permit holders have been renewing their certificates of maritime safety and updating their insurance policies to provide coverage to passengers from May to September. In April, the permit procedures began for the authorities to issue consents to enter the permit areas.
There are a total of 304 permit holders, of whom 204 are located in Isla Mujeres and Benito Juarez (Cancun), which is the jurisdiction of the Isla Mujeres Harbor Master. The Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) determines the dates for the start and end of the tour season, as well as other issues associated with the areas of the Aguas Verdes (Green Waters) and Aguas Azules (Blue Waters), which would be issued through the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) and the General Department of Wildlife (DGVS) for the declarations of the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve which converges in the same area.
The Harbor Master explained that it is uncertain whether the season will begin May 17 and end Sept. 17, and this is entirely up to SEMARNAT, as is the eventual modification of the management plan. Some environmentalists have proposed that the season be limited to the months of July and August, but he did not consider this to be justified, since only 40 to 50 percent of the fleet go out when there are fewer numbers of whale sharks in the sighting areas. However, their presence in the sighting areas has been recorded since January of each year.

The 49th edition of the Sol al Sol Regatta begins this Friday in St. Petersburg, Florida to sail more than 500 nautical miles to Isla Mujeres across the Gulf of Mexico. The sailboat "After You" will compete to defend its title with seven other boats, including  “50/50”, “Equinox”, “I Believe”, “Its Only Money”, “Midnight Sun”, “My Time” and “Tattoo”. They are expected to begin arriving at the island on Sunday, although the strong winds from the south affecting the Gulf are not favorable for the sailors, and could delay their arrival until Monday.  The boats can be tracked on the regatta website and activities are scheduled on the island.
The participants will have free days on the first and second days of May to visit island attractions, and the archaeological sites of Tulum and Chichen Itza. The traditional Captain's Cup will be held at the Casa de las Rocas at 1p on May 3, and at 7pm will be the basketball game between locals and the sailors. (The article says it will be held on the court "José del Carmen Pastrana", but that court by the town square has been removed and there is just rubble there now. It is scheduled to be completed in June). The Special Session of the City Council in their honor will be held at Punta Sur on Thursday, May 4 at 5pm, or at the Town Hall, depending on the weather.
Participants for the 48th edition of the Regatta Amigos will gather at Buho's restaurant at 10am on Friday, and go to the boats a half hour later. These exceptional students from ages 8-12 will begin their tour around the island at noon. Also on Friday, at 7pm there will be a cocktail party and awards ceremony at Cabanas del Mar. On Saturday the participants and their families will depart.

Surada winds cause advisories

This article is about yesterday's SCT weather report, which said conditions offshore were unfavorable for sailing by boats under 40 feet. The southeast winds of 30-40 kph closed the port for navigation by small boats, preventing fishing and tourist recreation outside the bay. The CONAGUA forecast indicated this could continue almost all weekend and may bring rain. This could reduce tourism on the long weekend. Friday, April 7 Easter Vacation begins
On Good Friday, April 14, about 75 actors are expected to participate in the reenactment of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ, which is part of the celebrations of the 500 years since Catholicism came to these lands. This will be the 25th anniversary of this celebration of the Passion of Christ in Isla Mujeres, and will include all the actors who have played Christ over those 25 years.
Holy Week begins April 9th with Palm Sunday, with the blessing of the palms and more emphasis will be given to the entrance of Christ (played for the sixth time by Wenceslao Trejo Martinez) into Jerusalem, riding on a small burro, as it says in the Scriptures.
A press conference was held about the event by parish priest Raul Sanchez, who explained that more than 30,000 pesos are being invested in the event, since it celebrates the 25 years of this event as well as 500 years since Isla Mujeres was encountered by Europeans, bringing Catholicism. They are getting new armor from Guadalajara for the Roman soldiers, and a renovation to the wardrobes of the main characters, so they will look more professional and realistic, as well as the costs of the burro.

Saturday, April 22, Earth Day
Action for Isla
To everyone who loves Isla Mujeres,
Action for Isla would like to cordially invite you to participate in the 2nd Annual Earth Day Isla Mujeres Dive Against Debris Event on April 22, 2017. The main objective of the event is to perform a cleanup of the docks and beaches of Isla Mujeres in order to give back to the community and the island that we all love and enjoy.
Last year’s event was a raging success, over 60 volunteers on land and sea collected more than 650kgs of trash in the space of an hour and a half, including 425 glass bottles, 87 snorkel tubes, 6 car and tractor tires and a supermarket shopping cart. We hope to make this year even bigger!
The main reason for this letter is to invite you to participate and support the cause. This event consists of teams of certified divers, support snorkelers and spotters on land that will remove trash from the areas under the docks from the Adolfo López Mateos dock to the dock of the restaurant Velazquez. Volunteers on the beach will assist in the separation and classification of waste. Additional volunteers and the schools of Isla Mujeres will facilitate a simultaneous cleaning of the beaches and boardwalk (Malecón) area and beaches of downtown (Centro) that same day.
In addition to cleaning, we will hold a raffle to raise funds for improvements in the area of the National Park and actively contribute to the organization Project AWARE, which aids in organizing such events worldwide and is currently supporting the logistics of this event. Furthermore, we will document and report the classification and total weight of all debris collected from these two areas to assist Project Aware in their ongoing research regarding marine conservation.
We will provide gloves and lunch for participants as well as large water dispensers, please bring your own refillable water container as it is Earth Day and we would like to promote reducing, reusing, and recycling.
