Isla Mujeres will reap benefits from participating in the Pueblos Magicos Fair LINK
After the participation of Isla Mujeres in the National Fair of Pueblos Magicos, the Director of Tourism in the municipality Jesús Castillo Magaña, reported that packages were offered and sold to the general public of the border area and Monterrey. He said that during the upcoming winter season
a large tourist influx is expected, when most of the visitors are from Canada, the United States and Mexico, so this direct sale will attract national visitors. There were 110,000 attendees at the fair, which lasted three days. There were also airlines offering a promotion for flights to Cancun with a 70 percent discount, resulting in a very attractive offer to visit the island. It is estimated that by the end of the year, more than two million tourists will have visited Isla Mujeres.

Navy assists American on cruise ship near Isla Mujeres LINK
Nov. 29 The Mexican Navy reported that yesterday they performed a medical evacuation of a male person with a hip fracture, who was on board a tourist cruise, 35 nautical miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Isla Mujeres. This assistance was given after receiving a phone call from the tourist cruise ship "Viking Sky", requesting support for the transfer of a 79 year old American male.
Therefore, an MLB-type vessel of the Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station of Isla Mujeres, set sail with health personnel on board, to intercept the cruise ship and receive the patient and a companion, in order to transfer them to Puerto Juarez, Quintana Roo. The patient and companion were transferred to the ambulance of a private hospital to continue receiving medical attention.
With these actions, the Department of the Navy of Mexico, as the National Maritime Authority,  confirms its commitment to the population to safeguard human life at sea.

Civil Protection requests that citizens do not  remove the caution tapes placed on the Caribbean Malecón, since their function is to prevent accidents and when removing them the work is being violated.

Taxi Union meeting planned
On December 16th, Eduardo Peniche Rodríguez, leader of the taxi drivers union, will hold the annual assembly, which will be an informational meeting and not an election, as some members of the union had anticipated. He said that although it was presumed that there was going to be a announcement for an election and change of union leadership, the notice from the authorities of SINTRA and the Board of Conciliation and Arbitration has not been received and without this they cannot issue an announcement for an election. He said they will continue to work hand in hand with the government while providing services, and the taxi drivers' union will continue to function as before. LINK

Erosion of eastern Caribbean walkway in front of Isla 33 condos   LINK
On Monday, rocks fell from the cliffs along the walkway overlooking the Caribbean Sea, in front of Isla 33 condos, apparently due to natural erosion. Authorities were notified and closed that area of the path, which is ~10 meters above the coast. The municipal Director of Public Works, Cesar Poot Perez, ordered the construction of a fence on this part of the pathway, as a retaining wall without blocking the views of the sea that are enjoyed by both islanders and tourists. Personnel with the Public Works and Green Areas agencies immediately began clearing away vegetation for the construction of the wall and to permit people to pass thru while walking or exercising.

Good level of tourism activity at the end of the month
Buena actividad turística al cierre de mes [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Nov. 28  The port is open for general navigation, including recreational activities. Hotel occupancy on the island had increased in the past three weeks from 44% to 57%, and it is expected to 80 to 90% with the end of month holidays in December. Golf cart rental agencies, restaurants and stores are noticing increased demand, and more overnight visitors are arriving from Canada and the United States as temperatures decrease there.

Islanders angry over taxi rate increase
Indignada la población isleña [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Some residents expressed outrage over the announcement of a 20 percent increase in taxi fares, when the minimum daily wage is only increasing by 8 pesos. They say the union is taking advantage when it is the only public transport available to islanders, and they are even more upset that SINTRA authorized the increase without a socioeconomic study to determine if the residents can sustain this blow to their budgets.
Councilman Roberto Martinez Aragon has asked the City Council to reactivate the urban transportation service, and the mayor has undertaken to provide a solution to the problem, but the lack of service continues. The people are left at the mercy of the taxi drivers, who do not always offer quality services, and often ignore the students (who pay a discounted rate) and prefer to provide their services to tourists.
Mr. Martinez Aragon said he is opposed to the increase in taxi fares, at least until the citizens have another option to chose, because this constitutes a monopoly. He said, "The issue of urban transport must be resolved in early December. I do not agree with a fare hike while the island has no other options for this service. If it was difficult for many people to pay 15 pesos and this affects their budget, the 20% increase will be devastating, especially for people who must use several taxis throughout the day."
Some residents were also annoyed by the comments of the taxi union leader, Eduardo Peniche Rodriguez who said that the people are asking for a new rate justified this by saying that there are riders who payh 20 pesos and don't wait for change....although he didn't specify that usually this tip is given to the driver who has a vehicle that is kept in good condition and above all, he doesn't turn off the air conditioning to save it for the tourists.
There is a comment from social media by a local user against the director of the union, his attitude, and his comments, saying that Mr Peniche Rodriguez is no longer the General Secretary of the union. A foreign resident posted, "There should be a public transport service here on Isla. Bring the bus! It is unacceptable that this is not available as an option. Where else in the world is there no bus service? While there is no bus, the locals should be able to take a taxi for the same cost as taking the bus: nine pesos."

Weather has been favorable for fishermen
Beneplácito en el sector pesquero. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The president of the Justicia Social cooperative and re-elected leader of the Regional Federation of Fishing Industry Societies in the State, Baltazar Gómez Catzín, said that this year the fishing industry is doing better than in previous years because seafarers have had opportunity to go out to work more days in a row.He said, "Other years the port closures are continuous, and it would open for only a couple of days, which are not enough for fishermen to go out because there are still a lot of swells, and then it would close again, and months would pass like this, but currently things are going much better and we hope this continues."
Regarding lobster production, he said, "Last season we closed with 70 tons of whole lobster and by the close of this season we hope to exceed 90 tons of whole lobster and ten tons of tails". He said that so far this season, the five fishing cooperatives of Isla Mujeres have collected approximately 50 tons of whole lobster, as well as about six tons of tails and, considering that there are still three months to before the season ends, it is very possible that this year's production could greatly exceed last year's.

Confirmation of 138 young Catholics & inauguration of museum
Confirmaron su fe 138 jóvenes isleños [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The bishop of the Cancun-Chetumal prelate, Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo, administered the sacrament of confirmation to 138 young islanders. After the ceremony, the celebrations in honor of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, patron saint of Isla Mujeres, began with a procession through the main streets of downtown.
Prior to the religious service, the Monsignor, accompanied by the priest Raúl Sánchez Alonso, Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, Mrs. Paola Orrico de Carrillo and the island historian, Fidel Villanueva Madrid, inaugurated the Parish Historical Photographic Museum. It is divided into four sections related different cultural and religious aspects of Isla Mujeres.
Mr. Villanueva offered explanations about the photographic and documentary treasures that the museum houses, while they toured the rooms and reflected about what Isla Mujeres was like before the conquest and evangelization, Isla Mujeres as a fishing village, Isla Mujeres and its relationship with the Virgin Mary and, finally, historical representatives of Isla Mujeres.
The archbishop spoke about the importance of the museum, to retain the island's roots, culture, and identity, and to not ignore who we are and where we come from. He said that the museum has a section dedicated to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception that demonstrates the faith and devotion of the people and invited future generations to continue with that tradition.
