More than 3000 Catholics gather in celebration of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception

Más de 3 mil fieles se dan cita en festejo en honor a la Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 29 de noviembre.-
This traditional event overflowed from the church and town square as about 3000 people gathered for this most important festival. The celebration began with Mass at 7:15pm, and the traditional procession began at 8:30pm and returned to the square at 9:10pm, where the was applause and fireworks. There was a dance of ballet folklorico in her honor, before she was returned to the church and  la vaquería dance began, featuring los jaraneros (a type of band) “Los Primos de Cancún”.
Sunday the Miraflores neighborhood group will be celebrating, and will have a dance "popular" (that is when people dance to band music, as opposed to performers dancing) and Monday is the union of the Public Security Department (police) which will feature a folkloric dance presentation at the Casa de Cultura at 8pm.

Isla Mujeres firefighters interact with young children
Children from the kindergarten-preschool Enriqueta Camarillo, with their teachers and parents, visited the fire station and interacted with the firefighters, who demonstrated emergency drills and taught them about avoiding risks and responding in emergencies. They used real examples and clear language, and the children's face shone with excitement and expectation during the exercises.

Sultana del Mar: Abandoned

Náutico

En abandono, la Sultana del Mar

0 30 de noviembre de 2015    By Cliserio E. Cedillo / Quequi
  Photo at link
The Sutana del Mar is a two story boat that is four meters wide, made entirely of wood and owned by Raúl Magaña Carrillo, which formerly made hundreds of trips between Isla Mujeres and Puerto Juarez. But now it has suffered the ravages of time, and sits like a corpse in its grave with thousands of memories, slowly rotting away and half sunken.
Don Hilario Rodriguez Chi, an expert on wooden boats who has done carpentry for Vardero Magana company for more than 30 years, is excited about his next masterpiece; a scale replica of the Sultana del Mar, almost a meter and a half long, ordered by the Mayor, Agapito Magana.
He showed an old photograph of the original boat and said, "It was a beautiful ship made from three types of local hardwoods:  el jabín, pucté y tzalam. It was very tough and withstood storms and hurricanes, and above all, made many tourists very happy. I don't remember how long the Sultana del Mar was afloat, but I think it was more than 30 years. It was the third of Don Raul Magana's boats, with the first being Carmita and the second was La Novia del Mar. They were both made completely of wood, as was the Sultana, which was the last. The boats that followed were made of different materials, such as the Dama Elegante."
In an article by historian Francisco Verdalles, Sr. Raul Magana recalls, "Then we had the Sultana del Mar and used it to bring cargo to Isla Mujeres. We would arrive at the pier in Puerto Juarez at 2am - 3am to load 30 to 40 tonnes of cargo, because they needed to be at the island between 5am and 6am. They made three or four trips daily."
Pedro Leon, a cartoonist from Mexico City who settled in Cancun said, "My first trip to the island was 17 years ago. We started in a pachanga (small boat) and went to the Sultana del Mar. There was a trio creating an atmosphere with musical rhythms and cold beers. The trip lasted an hour and a half, but it seemed like an instant."

Runway is in good condition
En buenas condiciones la pista del aeródromo.. [+] Ver mas
Although it is more that a half century old, the runway is in good condition, according to comments by business owners and people involved with civil aviation, who have a plan to reactivate regional flights of an executive level.
In late 1963, the runway was extended from 500 meters to 1250 meters to receive a visit from then President Aldolfo Lopoez Mateos to inaugurate the hotel Zacil-Ha in mid 1964. After that, commercial flights began coming to Isla Mujeres, linking it with Merida, Cozumel, and Chichen Itza.
Enrique Lima Zuno, who is a promoter of reactivating the airfield, said he has been promoting a plan for two decades with entrepreneurs to convert the airfield into a gateway for receiving executive flights from the southern part of the United States. The Regatta promoter has a plan for renovation and expansion of the airfield that includes filling in the adjacent salina to build hangars and a parking lot for cruise ships with  a pier in front of the high school, Colegio Bachilleres. He said he stands by the proposal for cruise ships, despite problems with controversy and setbacks, because the business community sees it a feasible to continue to pressure all three levels of government about this. He said the runway needs to be extended to 1500 meters.

  The History
This information has already been translated in recent articles...

Concern about homes
The Department of Civil Aviation released a preliminary report during the municipal administration of 2008-2011, which had requested that the federal government support for a project. But the presence of houses near the runway caused concern, particularly in relation to authorizing more work there by the municipal government. This seems reasonable, according to Gerardo Magana Barragan, at the time, who has been involved for many years in aviation activity on the island and in Cancun, but says it is an issue to be addressed by those who do that.
There are those who argue that since there was once commercial air service, there is no reason why that should not occur again. On Facebook, at Recuerdos de Isla Mujeres, residents have shared stories and photographs, and wrote about the service by Aerocaribe.

ISLA MUJERES, 28 de noviembre.-
The festivities in honor of the patron saint, the Virgin of Immaculate Conception, began Saturday, and will continue for the next ten days, throughout the whole island. The festivities began with the taking down of the icon from her niche, after the 7pm Mass, and hundreds of faithful Catholics participated in the traditional procession through downtown. Educating adults to receive equivalency certification

En educación de adultos

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 28 de noviembre.-
The head of the state Institute for the Education of Adults and Youths (IEEA), Paulino Adame Torres, said there was an excellent result in November from the test applications. Under the instructions of Gov. Roberto Borge Angulo, priority has been given to assisting adults who lack education, and the Institute implemented a strategy of special examinations to assist the learners who are in the final stages of any of the educational levels.
Sr. Adame Torres said, "We call them pre-UCN's (UCN's are participants who have concluded their level), ie, those who have not yet been accredited for between one to four of the twelve modules which, respectively, comprise the primary and secondary education levels. With this, we aim to encourage them in the learning process by giving them an opportunity to accelerate the final phases so they can advance in their academic preparation."
He said, "This is important because people who complete their basic education (compulsory education or 'basic' education is completion of middle school) with the Institute are given official certification which allows them to continue their preparation for high school, and then if they wish, to study for a career." He said three are a total of 110 students at the CONALEP campus #1 (National College for Professional Technical Education, who are benefitting from the work of the National Literacy and  Education Campaign (Campaña Nacional de Alfabetización y Abatimiento al Rezago Educativo.)
He explained that teens who participate in this program can complete their high school social service requirement while earning a bonus of 1250 pesos per adult achieving literacy or completing an education level. He said adult education should be a commitment of the whole community, and therefore the Governor has strengthened these links between different sectors of society as a means to improve the Institute's programs.
This year the IEEA wants to certify at least 18,500 persons in the state, which would be 4500 more than the 14,000 who were certified last year as the different educational levels, he said.

Shark fishing: To survive the crisis

Pesca de tiburón, para sobrevivir a la crisis

0 29 de noviembre de 2015 By Cliserio E. Cedillo/Quequi
Strong storms in the Caribbean have affected the commercial fishermen, who live day to day, which has caused some of them to go to sea searching for sharks. Although this does not pay very well, it helps them to survive.
Except in the months of May and June, when shark fishing is banned by SAGARPA, catching sharks is now becoming a means of survival for the seamen.  Amir Abelardo Ramírez, of the cooperative Patria & Progreso, said the meat from this species is kept for the December holidays, when it is sold as bacalao, at a lower cost. (Bacalao is dried, salted fish, usually cod. ).
He said, "Although it doesn't pay well, at least we generally make expenses and some profit. In recent weeks, the bad weather has often prevented us from going out, but when the weather is calm, we can fish for whatever is allowed, and in this case, it is cat sharks and sierra, (which are fried as postas), selling them whole at 60 pesos a kilo.
He and his companions had dragged several cat sharks from the dock, of more than 70 pesos in weight and almost two meters long, which would be loaded onto the scale before being butchered into steaks, to be salted and dried, in preparation for the Christmas holidays. He said, "In reality, we don't make very much, but after recent weeks, we cannot afford to search for more expensive species."

Magana ferry company guarantees service in winter
Naviera magaña garantiza servicio en invierno[+] Ver mas
The ferry company of the family Magaña gave assurances that they will provide passenger service during the winter season, after setbacks of mechanical failures in recent months. They said they are restructuring, with the departure of manager Jorge Aragon, who is being replaced by Eliecer Magaña Galué.
They are focused on providing service between Isla Mujeres and Puerto Juarez, without problems, during the winter season, the Easter holidays, and the summer season of 2016. They are planning to renovate the machinery of the Caribbean Salvage and Caribbean Island boats, with the Caribbean Princess providing transport for tourists, but also available to assist on this route when needed. The Caribbean Lady has been providing service recently, and receiving repairs and maintenance for several weeks.
Departures are hourly from 7am to 8pm with a discounted rate for islanders and residents of Quintana Roo of 50 pesos per round trip.

Anger with Ultramar
A call was launched on social networks to have a meeting to discuss concerns and complaints affecting students who ride the Ultramar ferry, and present them to the company.  The issue went beyond the students and into the community at large, with hundreds joining the cause on Facebook, and some saying the complaints should not only focus on the students.
They want better treatment and to show support for the students, and are discussing the following issues:  Respecting the discounted student rate on Saturday and Sunday because they have classes and extracurricular activities on these days, and some study on the weekends. To sell the students round trip tickets so they don't have to bother buying a return ticket when they are tired and want to get home, and this delay can cause them to miss the boat. To give them special rates for parking, because it is considered expensive. To respect the discounted student price all year long, because some students have classes and school activities during the holidays. To improve the treatment of students and users in general from Ultramar personnel. To give student discounts to students from other areas such as Merida and Vallodolid, who make the effort to visit their families. To not allow age restrictions on student discounts.
These requests will be analyzed before being presented to the managers of Ultramar, and municipal authorities are encouraged to fulfill their responsibilities in this matter.

Trova isleña, sería patrimonio cultural intangible. [+] Ver mas
State legislator Edgar Gasca presented a proposal to the state Congress to declare the band La Trova Isleña as a Patrimonio Cultural Intangible of Quintana Roo. He said this musical group has contributed its talents to our history as a fishing village of exceptional natural beauty by expressing this through their music. They recently performed at the Fifth Caribbean Cultural Festival, with several members from the 1980's participating.
Founders of the group include  Miguel Sánchez Azueta, Virgilio Fernández & Isolda Martínez Vera; Emiliano Martínez, Fructuoso “Tosito” Martínez Trinchán & Rafael Burgos Ríos. The band has received several awards, and includes songs written by island composers Virgil.. (This is incomplete but probably should say Virgilio "Chino" Fernandez, and his son, Virgilio Fernandez.)
If the proposal is approved, it will be recognized at a special session on December 9th on the Town Square, which would be the first time the Congress has met in Isla Mujeres to make a declaration of cultural heritage/Patrimonio Cultural.
