ISLA MUJERES, 30 de mayo.-

One of the important aspects of the installation of the Pueblo Magico of Isla Mujeres Chain of Production  (Cadena Productiva), was the signing of an agreement between the Asociación de Tiendas de Buceo de Isla Mujeres (Dive Shops Association) and the Asociación de Pequeños Hoteles (Small Hotels Association) to work together at various national and international promotional events.
They plan to develop and implement strategies to improve their competitive conditions, to improve the quality of tourism products and services, to be innovative & diversify the range of activities to encourage substantially longer overnight stays, which will improve spending and employment.
They want to create better marketing systems, which permit modern and direct sales to tourists offering Isla Mujeres as a destination and as a Pueblo Magico. They plan to develop and maintain a system of knowledge about tourist consumerism, qualitatively and quantitatively,  to identify the key values to provide direction for members of the Chain of Production (Cadena Productiva).
Goals also include identifying the needs for infrastructure and equipment, and the technical assistance that is needed; promotion of the island's culture and natural attributes in a manner that is safe and incorporates tourism studies, diagnostics, research, and transfer of technology with specialized tourism training; as well as other works and services that are required to manage the assistance provided by PRODERMAGICO.

Two weeks into Turtle Protection Season: 1500 eggs incubating
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/…/cerca-de-mil-500-huevos-…/

Two weeks into the Turtle Protection Season, a total of 1410 eggs that have been rescued and moved to incubate at the Tortugranja, all of the Loggerhead species. The facility's director, Raciel Rivero Coba, said they expect to rescue about 900 nests this year, and to release many hatchlings in the upcoming months. No public releases are planned, as was the case last year.
During the first week of this season, 710 eggs were rescued, which remain under the protection of the Tortugranja personnel. The majority of the eggs will begin to arrive soon, when the Green turtles are nesting on the beaches, which are watched over along the island's coasts.
The eggs will incubate for 45 to 60 days before the turtles begin to hatch out. Then they are transferred to the holding pools to be released in the evening or night, to avoid them being preyed upon by birds or other natural predators.
Last yeas ~1630 nests were protected, containing ~160,000 eggs, from which ~135,000 baby turtles hatched out and were released.

. Student Clean Up at Isla Contoy
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/…/estudiantes-logran-levan…/
Last weekend was the second clean up of the main beaches at Isla Contoy National Park, by students from Cancun, as part of the Fourth Festival of the Oceans. They cleaned the beaches at Punta Norte and la Cruces, as well as along the Caribbean coast, because that is where trash is left by the ocean currents.Participants included students of CECYTE 1 and members of the network of Educadores Ambientales (Environmental Educators) of Cancun.
They removed about 230 kilograms of trash, most of which was plastic bottles and other plastic. They inventoried the trash, to determine its source, which is regularly deposited in these areas and not generated by tourists who visit the Park.
Appreciation is expressed for the boaters who volunteered their boats to help the students and also for carrying away the trash.

Ultramar Ferry passengers delayed
Ultramar hace de las suyas[+] Ver masPhoto & full article at this link
On Monday morning, at the Ultramar ferry, about 100 passengers were unable to take the first ferry at 5:30am, because the ticket seller was late. Among the passengers who were affected was the Isla Mujeres priest, Raul Sanchez Alonso, and a group of parishioners who caught the next boat, on a trip to attend a religious commitment in the state of Yucatan.
Juan Velazquez Trujillo said, "I arrived well before the 5:30 departure time, but the ticket seller was late, and arrived about 8 minutes before the boat, and was not able to serve everyone. About 50 people were able to board, and the majority had to wait."
On Friday night, the ferry left fifteen minutes late, which is scheduled to depart from Puerto Juarez for Isla Mujeres at 11:30 pm, .
The ferries begin departing Puerto Juarez at 5am, every 30 minutes until 8:30pm, when they travel hourly from each side, until midnight when the last boat returns to Puerto Juarez. It is noted that the Magana ferries stopped operations about a month ago, which will be considered temporary until six months have passed.

Taking a dip in the sea during heat wave
Ante el fuerte calor, un chapuzón en el mar] Ver mas Full article and photo at this link
    May 30 Olvidio Lopez
During the recent hot weather, some families who live in the colonias have been seeking relief from the heat in the afternoons by entering the refreshing waters of the Caribbean Sea, despite the rocks and strong breakers. During the spring and summer, people can be observed along this coast, because the downtown beaches are distant and expensive, in addition to being busy at times.
At dawn on Monday, the sea was as flat as a plate, with no wind, and the choppy waves of recent days had stopped, which was a prelude to the strong heat felt throughout the day. Civil Protection does not recommend swimming in that area, where the waves are usually strong for those who are not accustomed to swimming, and the rocks can be dangerous for those who are not familiar with the area, where people must be careful.

Caribbean sea walkway needs maintenance
Se olvidaron del malecón Caribe.. [+] Ver masPhoto & full article at this link
The malecon offers spectacular views of the Caribbean from 12 meters above sea level, but residents are complaining that it lacks maintenance and needs better lighting, because the lighting system has been destroyed. Alderman Victor Osorio has been taking photos of this and other problems, and showing them to the reporter.
A resident fell in this area a few months ago and was injured. Sra. Maria Ek Perez said, "A tourist could suffer this problem at any time, if necessary precautions aren't taken."  Rocks that provide barriers to prevent people from falling over the cliffs have been removed, and some have been recently thrown down to the beach.

No market for escribano fish
Ya no es negocio la captura del pez escribano.. [+] Ver mas Photo & full article at this link
May 29   Daniel Avila Soliz holds a permit for scribe/escribano fishing in the area of Isla Contoy National Park, and he says he is affected by low prices, which indicates there is a 'black market' and the fish are being poached from the Reserve. Normally a batch of ten fish sells for 100 pesos, but lately they are only bringing 50 pesos, which causes Sr. Avila problems, because he has serious health problems which have evolved over time.
He faces high fuel costs and and costs for assistants, because he cannot move very well, due to his health problems. Fortunately, Sr. Avila has two small local businesses providing income, or his story would be different.
They go out fishing approximately every sixty days, catching about 1000 fish for him to sell during the interim, from his freezer. He pays two assistants 600 pesos each to help with the nets, and he pays 200 pesos to have the bottom of his boat cleaned.  He must also purchase 100 liters of gasoline, costing nearly 1500 pesos.
However, he says the market is flooded, and he is only able to sell because he has loyal clients who come seeking his product. There are three permits to catch escribano fish in Isla Contoy, which belong to  Daniel Avila, Tony Martínez and “Yoyo” Novelo, of Cancún. But there seem to be 'strangers' coming to catch the fish at night, according to recent, persistent rumors.
There are dozens of marinas which need escribano to provide for sports fishing during this spring-summer season of tourism sports fishing, but it appears these fish are being brought in from outside the region, as well as from within the area.
