"The itch that comes from the sea"
LINK  This is an article by the veterinarian Dr. Delfino, which I've previously translated, but not recently, about a couple asking if the itchiness they are suffering is associated their dog's problem with itchiness, noting that they swam in the sea together.  The answer is no, and that their problem was caused by tiny jellyfish in the sea, and he explains about these animals, the rash they cause, and its treatment. (He ends the article saying he'll get back to the problem of the dog.)
He said the jellyfish are in the shape of a thimble, and they are very small, from a few millimeters to 2.5 centimeters. He explains, "The 'thimble' has a very important characteristic, it has many small organs (organelles) that act as microscopic syringes that serve to inject toxins (that they develop) when they come into contact with skin, causing hives and rashes known as dermatitis or "swimmers rash".  The whelps may be accompanied by a burning sensation and can develop into serious wounds. In some people, especially children, this can cause reactions very like fever, nausea, vomiting, headache and fatigue."
He says people who have been exposed to these jellyfish should avoid bathing in fresh water, since this causes the toxins to be released, while vinegar has been shown to prevent this in the organelles that have attached themselves to the skin. For treatment, antihistamines are helpful and doctors may recommend lotions or creams, or in severe cases they may prescribe corticosteroids, topically or generally, which should only be used under medical supervision.
(Note:  These are often called "Sea Lice" or "Agua mala", and the word for jellyfish in Spanish is 'medusa'. There is some conflicting information online about immediate first aid, and recommendations by the American Red Cross and American Heart Association were updated in 2012, based on studies, and peeing on it isn't recommended. They advise flooding the sting with vinegar. However a study in Australia found that while vinegar may keep un-fired nematocycsts from releasing venom, it may actually make those stingers that already have envenomated the victim release more. Everyone seems to agree that rinsing the area immediately with saltwater/seawater is recommended. Many recommendations include immediately scraping the area with a card to remove nemacycts that could release more venom. One source recommended duct tape. Researchers have found that warm water was more effective than ice packs for relieving the pain, and topical lidocaine cream is often helpful. Over the counter pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen can be used to help with the pain. There are recommendations about when medical help or immediate assistance should be sought, particularly if the person is experiencing severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing or the sting is extensive. I don't think this article was published because this is currently a problem, but rather because it was a slow news day & it's general information that is handy to know, imo.)

Islamujereshoy reports (posted on April 26 at 8:27pm)
On Thursday at 7:30pm there was physical fight on the Ultramar ferry, because two people wanted one seat.  The incident caused fear among the passengers and concern that it could become a melee. An employee of the hotel Mia asked a tourist to accommodate a young child of about 4 years old, so that he could have a seat. (I think this means the hotel employee asked the tourist to put the child in his lap.) Witnesses said the tourist was arrogant, refused and started throwing punches. Witnesses said everything occurred very quickly, and at one point it seemed like the disagreement could involve everyone, because some supported the tourist, while a majority supported the employee. Ultramar personnel intervened to calm things down, and the trip concluded without any further incidents, but it caused a fright to the other passengers, especially the women and children.

Noti Isla Mujeres reports  the municipal Director of Ecology and the Environment, Carlos Barranco Garcia, said they will investigate the events surrounding the poisoning of eight cats, in which two died and six were saved. He said it is important to investigate the facts because this is not the first time an event like this has occurred. He said no official complaints have been filed in relation to this regrettable incident, and they are waiting for more information from the veterinary clinic. He said that in order to proceed, they need to have all the information, and in this way, they will attempt to locate those responsible, in compliance with the Law of Animal Protection and Welfare (Ley de Protección y de Bienestar Animal). He said they have not received any official information from the clinic yet, which is needed to proceed, and then they will act with the intention of finding those responsible, just as they have done on previous occasions.
It is recalled that on Wednesday, the veterinarian of the Veterinary Clinic of Isla Mujeres denounced the poisoning of eight cats, of whom two died and six were saved. About twenty more cats are missing in the vicinity of colonia Salinas, and it is believed that they could be dead. Mr Barranco Garcia said they have not been informed about the disappearance of more than 20 cats from this Veterinary Clinic, and they are unaware of any more deaths of cats by poisoning, and need more information about this case.

Noti Isla Mujeres reports: Neighbors complain about the hotel "Balu
Residents are complaining about the hotel "Balu" which is located between Rueda Medina and Juarez avenues, by the stairs at the Naval Base. The neighbors say the hotel has been irresponsibly leaving trash in the public thoroughfare, without containers, strewn on the pavement, which creates a terrible image for residents and visitors. They are complaining that the hotel has left rubble/gravel in the street, which remains since trash trucks don't collect that type of material. They also allege that the building is functioning as a hostel, when it is licensed to function as a hotel.

Close competition on the high seas

April 28 The first boats may arrive before noon on Sunday, with the leaders, Merlin & Sgt Reckless, having been in a battle for more than 24 hours and advancing rapidly across the Gulf of Mexico in the 50th edition of the Sol al Sol regatta. The finish line is at El Yunque islet (were Mia is located). You can track the boats here: http://yb.tl/rdsas2018 . The tracking site indicates that the boat Anthie withdrew due to technical problems after leaving the bay of the port of St. Petersburg (I think that refers to Tampa Bay) and sought a port just north of there, leaving 29 boats in the competition. Times will be adjusted according to the category and characteristics of each boat, to determine the winner.
This may be another year when the first boats arrive in less than 48 hours, which occurred in the recent years of 2011 and 2015, and there have been times when the first arrival took longer than 60 hours.
A report is given of the status of the boats at 11:30 am (Saturday) after ~24 hours of sailing. It is noted that the Navy of Mexico is ready to assist, in coordination with their American counterparts, if any of the boats have an emergency in international waters, which they have been doing for the more than fifty years since the competition began in 1964. The organizers are prepared to welcome each boat as it arrives, and the first ones are expected on Sunday morning.

In the evenings, they attend workshops at his home, where he has also begun to teach visual arts to "grandmothers" who are interested. He has had professional experience and training working with theater groups of the University of Yucatan. He extends an invitation to other senior citizen women, saying the only requirements are interest and a desire to participate.

Trash Transfer Facility to be cleaned out
The municipal Department of Public Services announced that the transfer of hundreds of tons of accumulated trash will be accelerated, now the the car ferry problems have been resolved, with a goal of having the Transfer Facility clean before the start of summer vacation.
At the beginning of April, the car ferry company, Maritima, had difficulty complying with its schedule due to problems from an inspection by the Naval authorities, for safety reasons. This resulted in an accumulation of about 800 tons of trash, as of a few days ago. But now the problem has been solved with Maritima Isla Mujeres, and they have returned to normal capacity, which should allow for resolution of this situation. The Ultramar cargo ferry Ultracarga III is expected to begin competing on the cargo-tourism route in upcoming days.

No Labor Day parade
The leader of the CROC labor union confirmed that there will be no parade to commemorate Labor Day on May 1st, but activities will be held at the union facility for members and their families, which will include pinatas, clowns, food, and raffles. More than 500 people are expected to attend.

Baby dies before reaching hospital
A two month old baby died from a congenital heart problem, while his parents were en route to the Hospital on Friday morning. According to a relative, the parents had planned to take him to the hospital on Friday to receive a vaccination, but on the way. he began to cry, and then he suddenly went immobile, when they were about 100 meters from the hospital. They hurried, but when they arrived at the hospital, they were told that the baby had died of a heart problem and there was nothing that could be done. The heart condition had been diagnosed since the baby was born, and it was necessary that he be treated as soon as possible, but the parents hadn't been able to take him to a specialist due to economic reasons.

April 27   The race is approximately 500 nautical miles, and most of the other information in this article has already been translated. It notes that Merlin and Sgt. The organizing committee said that the crews of these sailboats have extensive experience in the Gulf of Mexico, and most have crossed the Yucatan channel before.

Regattas bring benefits

Enrique Lima Zuno spoke about the benefits the regattas bring to the island which include promotion on social media, with participation from members of various yacht clubs in the southern United States. The annual Sol al Sol event also includes a regatta by the participating boats around the isle with islander children on board. Islander children also compete in a drawing contest, and the winning artwork is used to promote the next year's regatta.
Mr Lima thanked the Mexican officials, including the Navy, Immigration, the Harbor Masters, Customs, the Department of Health, and SAGARPA, as well as municipal and state authorities.
The City Council holds a special session to welcome the guests, and often organizes a traditional folkloric event as entertainment, as well as the customary basketball game between the yacht crews and local players.
Throughout the half century of regattas, participants have given support to the community in a variety of ways including donations of medical equipment such as fetal monitors, ultrasound equipment, wheelchairs, and medicines, as well as a three ton dump truck, an ambulance, a fire truck, an electric power plant, and a portable desalinization plant to provide drinking water.
Mr. Lima said that after the hurricane "Gilberto" they donated 450 tons of food, tubing, shovels, wheelbarrows, clothes, and ice which helped the seafood packers to not lose their frozen products. The community received 2300 'despensas' of food daily, for 75 days, which were distributed via the Navy and the municipal government of that time.

On Sunday and Monday, the front was expected to be located over the Yucatan Peninsula, and could cause lightning, thunder, and rain.

The International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women was commemorated with a presentation about the importance of preventing this problem among the girls of Isla Mujeres, and with a Day of Beauty in colonia La Gloria, by the students of the "Kathia Monforte" beauty school. They provided haircuts for men, women and children, as well as hairstyles, and braids, attending to 60 people between 9am and 1pm.

Storm drain cleaning
The personnel of Civil Protection, which includes the firefighters, were cleaning out the storm drains downtown to prevent flooding when it rains, because they become clogged with an accumulation of trash. The Director of Civil Protection, Helman Ulises Berman Graniel, asked the residents to cooperate and avoid littering in the streets, noting, "It is a joint effort between the community and the government, because the cleanliness and care of Isla Mujeres depends on everyone". He explained that only in this way will the streets and avenues of the municipality remain in good condition, allowing islanders to travel normally, even in the rainy season, preventing accidents and traffic congestion.
