IM Noticias    On Friday, May 31st, the drill team from the Isla Mujeres middle school, Benito Juarez, will represent the state at a national competition in Mexico City. In December, they competed at the state level in Bacalar and won el bicampeonato, so now they are representing Quintana Roo at the  "Artículos Militares Calderón" CDMX 2019.
The team has been working together for the past three years, since they attended  Julio Sauri Espinoza, and they have won various competitions during that time.

La Tertulia   About a dozen employees of Privilege Aluxes hotel became ill with vomiting, nausea, and abdominal pain from eating spoiled food, and managers treated them at the hotel, rather than taking them to the hospital, presumably to prevent reprisals. At 2pm, the hospital director,  Guadalupe Osorio Mares, had no definitive information, but COFEPRIS (Federal Commission for Protection Against Health Risks) had been notified of the incident.

Trabajadores de un hotel, con salmonelosis

See article above. On Thursday, a dozen Privilege Aluxes employees became ill with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. It is suspected that they may have acquired a salmonella infection from eating breakfast at the hotel, in the morning. When the symptoms began hours later, they weren't taken to the hospital, but were treated at the hotel. Hospital staff confirmed that COFEPRIS (Federal Commission for Protection Against Health Risks) had been notified of the incident. A local health official said inspectors with COFEPRIS in Cancun came over to the island.

Seven tons of accumulated trash at the Trash Transfer Facility

Hay 7 mil toneladas de porquería

Public Services Director, Pablo Moreno Povedano,  spoke about his department's plan to move the 7000 tons of accumulated trash to the mainland at a rate of  233 tons per day, in eight trucks with a capacity of 30 tons each, throughout the month of June, in hopes of having the facility cleaned out by the summer vacation period.  The problem has occurred due to broken trucks, which are expected to be repaired in the next few days. On average each truck carries 30 tons, they can make up to three trips per day.

There are no To Go (package) alcohol sales from stores during this time, and foreigners in tourist areas such as Isla Mujeres may purchase alcoholic beverages at bars and restaurants, with food.

"Dry Law" on Saturday & Sunday this weekend
Sunday is an election day for state legislators, so "To Go" alcohol sales are prohibited by the Dry Law (Ley Seca) for a 48 hour period, beginning at the first minute on Saturday (00:00), until midnight on Sunday (24:00). Foreigners in tourism areas, such as Isla Mujeres, may purchase alcoholic beverages, with food, at bars & restaurants.
In other words, stores aren't selling alcohol on Saturday & Sunday, but foreign tourists can buy drinks at bars & restaurants, and technically a food purchase is required. If you want to buy "To Go" alcohol, do it today or Friday...or wait until Monday.

The program for protection of sea turtles relocates their eggs to the incubation pen at the Tortugranja. So far in May they have protected 16 Loggerhead nests with 1553 eggs, seven Hawksbill nests with 1021 eggs, and one Green turtle nest with 133 eggs.

"Against All Odds" is currently on Netflix (in Mexico) & features scenes in Isla Mujeres from 35 years ago (and Tulum, Cozumel & Chichen Itza). Isla first shows up at ~32 minutes when Jeff Bridges' character arrives to find the girlfriend of a mobster (James Woods)...until she (Rachel Ward) makes a quick escape on the old 'slow' Magana ferry, "Sultana del Mar". #1 is from the film, whose title in Spanish is "El Poder y La Pasión". The film is in English.

Nearly 800 swimmers participated in the 14th edition of "Crossing 2019" open water swim between Isla Mujeres and Cancun, who were from 24 states of the Mexican Republic and 18 countries. The overall winners of the 10 km event, in the men's and women's categories, were Mexican Arturo Rosales and the American Sandra Frimerman.
It is noted that the"Cancun Iron Swim"  took place on Saturday, with 2000 swimmers participating of which 45 percent were foreigners.

From Governor Carlos Joaquin:
Today our state made environmental history. The Congress of the State of Quintana Roo approved the Law of Solid Residues, which prohibits single use plastics such as straws, bags, and styrofoam items, among others. A link is provided to a Congressional press release that says:

Congress approves new law for trash management

May 29, 2019
The Congress of the State of Quintana Roo unanimously approved the Law for the Prevention, Integral Management and Circular Economy of the Residues of the State of Quintana Roo, which will create a new integral management scheme to reduce, reuse and recycle trash, as well as regeneration of natural resources and the environment.

With this law, Quintana Roo prohibits the use of plastic materials and utensils such as straws, plates, glasses, cups, cups, trays, cutlery, among others, as well as derivatives of Styrofoam.

In addition, disposable plastic bags for the transfer of merchandise used in stores and supermarkets, self-service stores, convenience stores, pharmacies, restaurants and the like should also be discontinued.

Equipment and materials used for the construction industry, packaging of goods and products used for medical purposes are exempt from this prohibition.

This law seeks to promote sustainable development and consolidate a circular economy, through the prevention of the generation and integral management of urban solid waste, bio-waste, special handling waste and hazardous waste of local competition.

It also has the purpose of promoting, inducing and, where appropriate, ensuring the selection and separation of Waste and its by-products.

This norm was the result of various legislative initiatives and proposals collected in meetings on the subject, which were carried out in various cities of the entity.

The replacement of prohibited plastic products must be carried out in the exclusion zones (islands, islands, keys and vulnerable zones) in six months from the entry into force of the aforementioned reform (that is, after 30 days from being published in the official publication). For the rest of the state there will be 12 months for the application of the new regulation, which does not allow the use of the aforementioned plastic products. LINK

The Director of Public Services, Pablo Moreno Povedano, said that due to problems with two of the trash transfer trucks, about 7000 tons of garbage have accumulated at the Transfer Facility. They are expected to be repaired by Monday, June 3rd, when the process of removing the backlog should begin. It is expected to be completed in June, before the summer season of July and August, when it is expected to be clean.

Fishing cooperatives with legal issues

Cooperativas frenadas por problemas legales

The legal problems faced by the fishing cooperatives "Isla Blanca" and "Makax" have prevented public financing of their infrastructure, but the former cooperative has  submitted its request to the federal government for renovation of its dock, which is falling apart. This project includes a palapa at the end of the pier, but there is still the litigation with the Port Authority of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo) to define the use of the area of water that is in front of the Federal Zone where the coop has a concession.
The wooden pier of the Makax cooperative should have been replaced some time ago, but their area of Federal Zone (concession) was sold to a private individual six years ago. The cooperative acquired another property (concession) about 200 meters away,  but some members of the group say the sale was a bad deal.
A few weeks ago, Baltazar Gómez Catzin, president of the Federation of Cooperatives of Quintana Roo, announced that the regularization of each of the five fishing groups of Isla Mujeres should be accelerated in order to process requests for governmental assistance from  the National Fisheries Commission.

Breves de Isla Mujeres

A turtle was rescued after it became stuck among the rocks while attempting to find a spot to nest, and a video was on social networks. Assistance was provided by members of the crew who provide nighttime surveillance to protect the nesting turtles.  There was a rescue last year of a turtle who was stuck in the rocks, and the general public are reminded to report problems like this so that specialists can intervene.
The meeting of the Maritima company, who provide car ferry service between Isla Mujeres and Punta Sam, has been rescheduled again, for June 1st. The Marinsa company wants to discontinue their association with Maritima, and there are plans to discuss whether the ferry "Sergio Aguilar Gracia" should be sold to pay off the large debts that the company is carrying.

Whale sharks have arrived

Ya llegaron los tiburones

On Tuesday, authorities completed the delivery of permits for whale shark tours, and several whale sharks were spotted on Wednesday. On Tuesday, only a couple whale sharks were seen north of Isla Contoy. On Thursday, the tour operators will be attending the “2º Encuentro por el Tiburón Ballena”, where the topics of discussion will be "Tourism and the Whale Sharks" and "Profiles of the Exploiters in the Mexican Caribbean", and "Results of community inspection and surveillance". The meeting will take place at the Cancun planetarium “Ka’Yok” today (Thursday) from 8:30 to 2p.
Critics say authorities should make more conservation efforts, noting that fewer boats should be allowed to offer tours at the beginning of the season when there are fewer whale sharks, and that they should have the permits available sooner.

Children's competition of tricycles decorated as boats

Concurso infantil de barcos

Prizes were awarded to the first three places, with Verónica Velázquez Pool in third place, Luna Valery Rodríguez Aguilar in second place and Saory Renata Barrera Silva in first place. About half a dozen children participated with five boats copied in a smaller scale, including the sailboat  “Cuauhtemoc” (which serves as a sailing school ship for Naval cadets.)   The event was attended by municipal and Naval authoriies.

Yesterday......

Fishermen affected by sargasso

Pescadores en momentos críticos

The reporter spoke to a fisherman with the Caribe cooperative as he was filleting fish, while customers were waiting nearby. He said they are affected by sargasso, but not as much as the fishermen to the south. The sargosso interferes with their capture of bonito for bait, when they troll for them, and it interferes with their longlines, because it wraps around the hooks and bait.  It also interferes with diving to catch fish because it gets into the caves and the fish don't enter.

Commemoration of Dia de la Marina

Conmemorarán el Día de la Marina

Everything is ready to commemorate the CII Anniversary of the National Navy Day and LXXVI Anniversary of the Nationalization of the Mexican Navy on June 1st. Below is a diagram of the boat procession. See events section below for other activities.

Family planning available

Invitan a planificación familiar permanente

Tubal ligation for permanent sterilization will be offered for free on the first Tuesday of the month, after the patients have been registered and evaluated. This was offered recently and three women had the surgery. Up to ten women can have the procedure at the Hospital during one of these days, but that many are not expected at a time. There are no fees and the women are able to go home the same day.

The volunteers with Accion Isla cleaned the mangroves on Sunday, removing a considerable amount of plastic and they decided to hang plastic bags from the bushes so that those who go thru this area can dispose of their plastic trash. The do weekly cleanups and have recently been cleaning the turtle nesting beaches.
The Cocteleros of Isla Mujeres continue to lead in their league after beating Los Chuchos of Playa del Carmen, with a score of 4-2.
The vet Delfino had to put a dog to death who had been neglected and abandoned by a private individual, due to the extremely bad health of the animal, but no charges against the owners were made by the municipal Ecologia Department.

Reinforcement of Mundaca palapa

Apuntalan palapa de Mundaca

Posts to help support the Mundaca palapa have been added to prevent effects from the strong southern Surada winds. The palapa is only four years old, and has received similar maintenance previously. It was built with federal funds also financed the perimeter fence of the hacienda. It is recommended that the palapa not be used for large events when the weather is very windy.

Urban Development Department suspends work on North Beach

Desarrollo Urbano clausura obra en Playa Norte

The municipal Urban Development department put closure seals on work by the Luxury restaurant and bar, because their papers were not in order. It has been rumored that Ultramar has plans to use their dock to disembark passengers, which would save the company from paying the per passenger fee for use of the Maritime Terminal.

Lack of attention from Aguakan

Grave falla de Aguakan

Last weekend, there were water problems in two different parts of Hidalgo Avenue, with one being an overflow of sewer water causing foul odors from a storm drain, which deterred potential dinersin that area. The other was a tap water leak, so the water was turned off to that section and businesses were dependent on the water in their rooftop storage containers.
