TVisla Mujeres  reports:    Propeller protectors failed test LINK
After two tests of the propeller protectors for outboard motors on boats who offer whale shark tours were conducted on Thursday, the Harbor Master concluded that the devices are not suitable for this work.
During the test on the boat "San Diego" the protector broke into two pieces when they had traveled less than five nautical miles, at a speed of 20 knots, which caused the boat to be adrift, requiring assistance from another vessel to return to the Harbor Master's dock.
During the test on the "Santa Rosa, they found that the propeller protector caused the steering wheel to become rigid, making it difficult to maneuver the boat.
From these results, the engineers concluded that the use of these devices isn't viable, since they also cause damage to the expensive engines. The captains and crews hope that with this official determination by engineers with the Harbor Master's office the requirement for these devices will be removed. They have not been able to work for the first two days of the whale shark tour  season, which began on May 15th, and they are hoping they will receive their permits soon.
