ISLA MUJERES, 29 de enero.-
The Director General of Public Services, José Guadalupe Ríos Chalet, said this week there will be a reactivation of the program of junk removal, upon orders from the mayor, Juan Carrillo Soberanis. It will begin on Wednesday in colonia El Cañotal, where they will collect furniture, appliances, and mattresses that people leave outside their homes. He said they will announce the pick up schedule around the colonias in and el Centro downtown. He explained that this will be an ongoing campaign that will continue year-round, especially during the times when it is important to prevent mosquito borne diseases.
He said, "I urge citizens to join us in keeping our municipality clean. The Mayor has put a lot of emphasis on the issue of public services and we have his full support toward maintaining the cleanliness of the island. During this administration we have added a "volquete" of seven meters and another truck to our fleet to continue providing quality services."
He said they are currently working on a plan to provide a contact number in upcoming weeks for the islanders so they can call to request removal of furniture and junk. They are working on a project to raise citizen awareness to get everyone involved in the care and cleaning of the island.

Some of the rock cages (gabions) have deteriorated which are located at the base of the hurricane wall which protects downtown. causing concern from some residents. This includes segments in front of the home of the Marfil Ordaz family and near the hotel Rocas del Caribe. The malecon and hurricane wall are about a kilometer long, and there is more deterioration at the southern section, where some segments of the gabions have disappeared, due to rusting of their steel cages.
The currents are stronger during the strong winds and high waves at this time of year, which could erode the foundations of the structure, which would make it more at risk during hurricane season. If the wall were to break in this area during a hurricane, it could open a channel to Allende street and the infrastructure there, which includes a water tank, learning from the experiences of Hurricanes Gilberto in 1988 and Wilma in 2005.

On Sunday, winds of over 60 km/hr caused the vehicle ferry which offers service to Punta Sam to cancel the last two scheduled departures of the day, after the strong winds of over 60kph caused docking difficulties. The last connection from the isle to Punta Sam was at 10:30am by the "Sergio Gracia Aguilar".
On the island there appeared to be little demand for this service with just three vehicles at noon, and Punta Sam was reported to have more cargo trucks. The company explained that the adverse conditions made it impossible to continue operating while ensuring the safety of crew and passengers, and therefore it was decided to inform the Harbor Master and customers. The Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, said that the port was closed for boats under 40 feet since last night, and the intensity of the winds increased in the morning as the cold front entered, affecting the boats.
The ferry plans to resume service on Monday with the normal schedule of six round trips. Frequency increases to seven crossing on Tuesday thru Friday, while it is reduced to five on Saturday and three on Sunday.

Tourists were visiting the downtown businesses, but nautical recreational activities in the Bay were canceled to avoid risks from the weather. Most of the tour boats from Cancun did not come over, but this activity is expected to resume on Monday, when the force of the winds are expected to diminish, but the restriction of boats under 40 feet outside the bay is expected to continue.

The temperatures were 22-24 and expected to be 22-23 on Monday, and tourist recreational activities are expected to resume then.
