Our region remains in Yellow status on the state epidemiological light for Jan 4-10, as does the southern region of the state.

Today Isla Mujeres continues to report a total of 237 cases with 21 deaths and199 recovered. The state geoportal for 12/30 continues to report 2 active cases by colonia, with one in Amp. La Gloria and the other in La Gloria.

Yesterday---Tonight the sun sets at 6:16 and the full moon rises over the Caribbean at 6:54. Tomorrow's (Thursday's) moonrise is at 7:52, Friday at 8:51, Saturday at 9:50 & Sunday at 10:48.  UPDATE--Yesterday was an evening of cloudgazing, not moongazing. It was good Tuesday night, when it was fullest.

Wednesday, Isla Mujeres reported another case of C-19 a total of 237 cases with 21 deaths and one more recovered for a total of 199 recovered. The state geoportal for 12/30 continues to report 2 active cases by colonia, with one in Amp. La Gloria and the other in La Gloria. On the national map for 12/28, Isla Mujeres continues to report 171 suspicious and 139 negatives.

The Governor posted--We are doing special reviews on several flights arriving from abroad to Cancun Airport to have more certainty about avoidance of Covid-19. We will stay attentive and bring awareness about the protocols.

In response to a citizen recommendation to require a recent negative test for entry, the Governor replied: "One of the protocols being put in place is testing for tourists". To a comment about similar issues with domestic flights noting Mexico City is under the red light status, the Governor replied: "That's right, this is why we are very aware of everyone entering the state." To the comment requesting strict checking on the ferries and complaining about the lack of healthy distancing (in Cozumel) he replied: "I appreciate your comment and we'll keep an eye on the situation."

The President announced that the first vaccines, for health personnel, will arrive in Quintana Roo on January 11th. (Video clip posted by Governor)

Today/Thursday-- Today's forecast from the state for our municipality is of the "hedging our bets" sort, which is typical for our changeable tropical weather--"Partly to occasionally cloudy skies; with probabilities of rain as well as occasional showers, mainly over the coastal areas; and cool to hot temperatures with a probability of very hot over urban and coastal areas; east wind varying to the southeast from 25-35kph, with stronger gusts and areas of rain." The ESE winds are currently kicking up increasing whitecaps with pleasant temperatures. Photos from

Maravilla Caribe Bed & Beach and the webcam.

As you can see on the national extended forecast, Cold Front #24 is expected to bring some wind & rain on the weekend. (Circles mean rain, purple squiggles mean wind.)

Local water purifiers to raise prices while remaining well below national competition
Island companies Agua Vera and Puritronic provide purified water for more than 3000 families and local businesses for 20 pesos per 20 liter/5 gallon jug, which may increase to 23 pesos early in 2021. This will still be significantly less than the 36 pesos per bottle charged by the soft drink company (Coca Cola).
Their plants & products are frequently monitored by the federal agency COFEPRIS, who have never found any irregularities. A Puritronic company employee said there have been increases in the costs of materials and supplies that are necessary to treat the water properly, but they held the price to 20 pesos to help the families who experienced economic difficulties because they lost their jobs or suffered pay cuts due to the pandemic.  VIDEO of boat at the dock with Naval personnel aboard and people on the dock captioned--  A woman received medical attention from Naval personnel reportedly due to injuries from the propeller of this boat

VIDEO of Ultramar line at Gran Puerto with caption saying the number of passengers has increased without the separate/preferential line for residents--Dec. 29

 La Tertulia

Yesterday...Naval personnel carried out a medical evacuation from the yacht "Casual Cruz" which flies a Mexican flag, of a woman with abdominal lacerations apparently caused by the boat's propeller. She was given first aid and determined to be in stable condition, and was transported via a boat of the Naval Search & Rescue unit to Puerto Juarez for transfer aboard an ambulance to a Cancun Hospital for specialized care.

Yesterday...Photos (Showing crowds of people) with caption noting this is what the Isla Mujeres maritime terminal looked like on Wednesday due to the poor service of Ultramar, without care for the risks represented by the crowds of people during the C-19 pandemic and giving preference to foreign passengers because they pay more.

Yesterday--Photos from the Gran Puerto dock-port showing crowds of people with caption saying that as in Playa del Carmen & Cozumel, Islanders expect authorities with COFEPRIS (Federal Commission for Protection from Health Risks) to conduct an inspection due to the violation of protocols for the prevention of spreading of Covid-19, because of the constant over-crowding of Ultramar passengers traveling in both directions on their ferries between Isla Mujeres and Gran Puerto. This can be seen nearly every day in photos and videos posted on social media by angry islanders and tourists, concerning the long lines and lack of healthy distancing, in addition to passengers without face masks and a lack of temperature taking.

There is a saturation of passengers on every ferry, even with people standing inside the boat and in the baggage area. Islanders say they don't understand how the authorities who are responsible in these matters are turning a blind eye to this public health problem that is advantageous to Ultramar. They say that COFEPRIS sanctioned & suspended a crossing of an Ultramar ferry between Playa del Carmen & Cozumel for carrying excess passengers, and they should take action here as well.

Regarding the sani-tunnel to disinfect arriving passengers, the General Coordinator of Operations in Puerto Juarez and Isla Mujeres, Fabiola Vicencio Jimenez, said the tunnel wasn't discontinued but rather it was decided to change the spraying system, with the intention of speeding up the entry of passengers to the Terminal and avoid agglomerations. He added that due to the holidays, the number of passengers has increased, making it slow and tedious to pass thru the sani-tunnel, which is why the sprinklers are directly located on the entrance arch for a better flow of people while respecting healthy distancing.

Isla Mujeres History on Facebook & Website

Today Isla Mujeres continues to report a total of 236 cases of C-19 with 21 deaths and now there are 198 recovered. The state geoportal for 12/29 continues to report 2 active cases by colonia, with one in Amp. La Gloria and the other in La Gloria. On the national map for 12/28, Isla Mujeres reports 171 suspicious and 139 negatives.

The proposed ten dollar tax on foreign tourists is scheduled begin in April, with plans to collect it at the Cancun airport.

From January to October 2020, 9.8 million tourists visited Q Roo, compared to 21.9 million during that period in 2019.

In the first few months of the pandemic, Quintana Roo lost more than 100,000 jobs in the tourism sector, which provides about 80% of the state's revenue. Tourism destinations like Cancun, Tulum, and Isla Mujeres turned into 'ghost towns', until little-by-little tourism began rebuilding. In June, the state declared tourism an "essential" industry and reopened hotels & restaurants at reduced capacities.
The state Secretary of Tourism, Marisol Vanegas said the losses for 2020 are expected to total about 4.6 billion dollars, which is a 30% decline from 2019's 15.4 billion dollars in tourism revenue for the state. She said that 2021 is expected to be a difficult year, given the havoc that the second wave of Covid-19 is causing around the world.
In 2019, 16 million overnight tourists visited Q Roo, which is estimated to have declined by 30% this year, for a loss of about 4.8 million overnight guests. Another 7 million visitors arrived via cruise ship in 2019. This year, 2.8 million cruise passengers arrived during the first three months, and none since.
From January to October 2020, only 9.8 million tourists visited Q Roo, which is 12.1 million fewer than that period in 2019. The largest decreases were English (-84.65%); Spanish (-82.85%); Argentinians (74.08%); Colombians (-71.64%) and Germans (-70.46%).
However, the current number of tourists visiting Quintana Roo from the United States has increased by 23% compared to 2019, according to the Washington Post. With Europe closed to most Americans, Mexico has successfully marketed itself as a desirable alternative.
Ms Vanegas explained that the most important indicator is airport arrivals, noting the number of arrivals in the three international terminals on the day she was interviewed was 358, compared to about 480 daily just before the formal declaration of the pandemic. (The interview was published on Friday.) She said of the 358 operations, about 180 were arrivals and the majority were from North America. She explained, "We had about 100 arrivals from the US & Canada, which are the strongest internationals.    This is influenced by the high growth of the North American market, which has to do with the fact that they cannot travel to Europe."
Despite restrictions in European countries, part of that market has also recovered, including flights from the UK. This week the President of Mexico said those flights wouldn't be suspended after the spread of a new, more contagious strain of SARS-CoV-2. Ms Vanegas said, "Just this week British Airways arrived with very large flights of 380 passengers. We also have flights from Air France, Evelop has also started flying, and Lufthansa. These are the most important Europeans." At this time there are nearly 80,000 tourists in the state, which is expected to increase by the end of the year, due to the Christmas season.
Quintana Roo has 110,000 hotel rooms, which are allowed to rent at 60% while the state epidemiological light is in yellow. However, the state government granted hotels a special permit allowing them to increase maximum capacity to 80% between Dec. 21, 2020 and February 21, 2021, due to the anticipated high demand during the Christmas holidays and the winter months.
The Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, who represent about 38,000 rooms, said that even with 60% occupancy, they're still losing money, because many have had to lower their rates to attract customers. Although they hope to end the year with 60% of their rooms occupied, prior to October occupancy rates were averaging less than 35%.
Ms Vanegas said that although many rooms were empty this year, no accommodation went bankrupt. She said 8000 or 9000 new hotel rooms are built and opened yearly and that same number has been maintained. She defended the $10 tax on international tourists, saying it is a necessity and has to do with the economic situation which the state will be in next year. In response to hoteliers who think the fee will discourage international visitors she commented "No tourist anywhere in the world makes a decision because in one place they do or don't charge ten dollars." The Governor said the fee will be probably be charged at the airport upon departure, and noted that other countries charge similar fees and that Baja California has airport kiosks where this is paid. One legislator commented that this is burdensome because international tourists already pay a national fee of slightly more than 500 pesos, while another noted it won't apply to children and seniors. This fee is expected to generate 300-400 million pesos annually to help pay for public infrastructure and resources used by tourists.

He said that the both domestic and international tourists are visiting this Pueblo Magico, which is providing services in compliance with all protocols that COFEPRIS recommends to prevent the contagion and spread of covid-19, including operating at 60 percent of the business's capacity.

  Isla Mujeres al Dia

Isla Mujeres al Dia reports hotel occupancy is about 50%, which is much less than is usual at this time of year.

Dra Xhanat Tze Mora posted a video she made at 3am, when she had the opportunity, because there are things she wants to say concerning the coronavirus pandemic & says "Please listen". (She's the municipal C-19 prevention liaison and has a medical practice on the island.) She said so many people are acting as tho coronavirus is over and they are partying and having normal holidays and they could not be more wrong. Covid is here and cases are increasing and those behaviors are driving the increase. The doctors are seeing more cases among young people, who need oxygen. She said it's hard to get oxygen for patients and there is a lack of medications. It is difficult for all the doctors and some have gotten sick. There are many people acting like things are normal or thinking they are safe because they are young, healthy, don't smoke and take vitamins. But there are no guarantees & then they get sick and need oxygen. She doesn't want to see more patients needing oxygen & to be up at 3am trying to obtain it for them. Because people are not taking this seriously. It's making her sad. The vaccine is coming and people need to take care meanwhile. There aren't enough medications. She's very sad, very worried and tired. She asks that everyone return to taking it seriously and being careful, for the good of everyone. (Screenshot of Dra Xhanat)

ISLA MUJERES BEACHES CONTINUE TO DAZZLE VISITORS
In the face of the New Normality,  entry protocols provide safety and confidence for beach-goers.
With their quality standards, white sand and turquoise blue waters, Playa Centro and North Beach in Isla Mujeres remain the preference of thousands of tourists visiting the Mexican Caribbean, and the municipal government works to keep them in optimal conditions 365 days of the year.
In the face of the New Normality caused by the coronavirus pandemic, entrance regulations have been implemented to prevent any possible surge of the disease among visitors and the families of Isla Mujeres.
On a daily basis, crews of workers with the Federal Zone agency ZOFEMAT begin working early in the morning, raking, sifting and cleaning the sand, as well as removing sargasso and trash from the beaches so that they stay clean.
This type of maintenance work, as well as the security that is provided by the ongoing patrols of the Tourist Police and the lifeguards along the shores of this Pueblo Magico, makes Isla Mujeres a place without equal.
In order to continue the island's economic recovery, it is essential to continue taking care of our health and maintaining health protocols against C-19, such as the correct and constant use of face masks, avoiding agglomerations and frequently washing your hands with soap and water.
