Island Mourns Death Of First Mayor

DESCANSE EN PAZ
ARIEL “EL PICHO” MAGAÑA
Friends, family, and politicians from around the state are mourning the passing of Ariel "Picho" Magana Carrillo, who died yesterday morning in Merida from complications of diabetes. In 1975 when the Free and Sovereign State of Quintana Roo was formed, he became the first Mayor of Isla Mujeres, and remained a leader among the fishermen. Among the most important works during his term was the construction of City Hall, the baseball field "El Pescador", and the construction of a hurricane shelter on the highest part of the island. His tribute yesterday was attended by former President of Mexico Jose Lopez Portillo and former Governor Jesus Martinez Ross. The former Mayor's nickname "Picho" comes from his love of baseball, where pitching is the best position on the diamond. He was part of the leadership of the Langosteros of Quintana Roo. The wake was planned at the Magana Carillo family home on Rueda Medina, near the wooden pier.On Tuesday at 8am there will be  a tribute at the Town Square with a funeral procession taking the body to the Church of Immaculate Conception for a celebration of Mass. Burial is expected to take place at 10am, following the Mass.
He was born July 10, 1938, and grew up in the house of the Magana family, and his father was known as an outstanding fisherman who became a prosperous businessman as a shipowner, merchant and politician, founding the first fishing cooperative in 1929, and serving in state government when Q Roo was a Territory. When interviewed about his childhood by the local historian, "Picho" recalled working at the bakery"La Colmena", which was housed in a large wooden building with a white sand floor, and fishing aboard a 23 foot boat called "Patria". In addition to being the first Mayor of Isla Mujeres, he is remembered as a leader of the fishermen and for his love of baseball.

45th Year: Sol al Sol Regatta Is In Town
Por Esto reports that on Monday the sailboat "Merrythought" was the first to cross the finish line of the Regatta Sol al Sol 2013 XLV, noting the event has occurred continuously since 1965, originating in St Petersburg. (The banner in the photo accompanying the article says since 1969, and this is the 45th edition. Diario Q Roo also says it has been held continuously since 1965. The Regatta website says it has been run continuously since 1969, Link to History of the Regatta) HERE IS A LINK to the satellite tracking page of the Regatta website, showing the participants arrival times. By Monday noon there were six boats at the Lima dock, where the participants were greeted with a warm welcome and a cold beverage. There were 16 boats yet to arrive, and the participants will be welcomed with the traditional formal City Council Special Session on May 2, honoring the 25 captains (Yes, I know 16 + 6 = 22) and their companions. The traditional Basketball game will be held on the downtown court José del Carmen Pastrana  on Wednesday May 1st.

Festival Friday Honoring Moms & Kids
In Mexico, Día del Niño is today, April 30th and Mother's Day is May 10th. (Labor day is May 1st and of course Cinco de Mayo is May 5th). The state and municipal DIF social service agencies are planning a big party to honor the mothers and children of Isla Mujeres on Friday. This is an annual event featuring a show, surprises, gifts, a raffle, and refreshments. This year the entertainment will include the groups "Da Boys", "Pa Children", and member of the "Renata" Dance Academy. Source: Quintanarroense/Ovidio Lopez

Brush Fire In Sac Bajo
In an article dated April 29, Quequi/Carlos Gasca reports a fire consumed 40 square meters of brush yesterday on a vacant lot near the hotel Puerta al Mar. Hotel employees reported the fire shortly after 1pm, and began battling it with hoses from the hotel. Aguakan employees arrived and accessed a water pipe to fight the fire, and Civil Protection firefighters joined in using hoses from the hotel. The two fire trucks were not present and the last comment heard about them was both were "se encontraban en reparación"..being repaired. The fire was under control by 2pm and Aguakan removed the exposed pipes. The cause of the fire is unknown but residents say there are people who enter that property of 1500 square meters, and it is presumed they may have been burning trash and it got out of control.  The lot is located in a residential area of Sac Bajo.

Labor Day Parade May Be "Thin"
The CROC labor union will not participate in the Labor Day Parade, "on instructions from Senator Isaías González Cuevas", said local labor union secretary Román Maldonado Euan. He said in its place the members would celebrate with their families. The union will hold a festival at 4p,  at the Taxi Union lodge in La Gloria where they will raffle a motorcycle and other items for their members.   Other unions have announced they do not plan to participate in the Labor Day Parade, so it is expected to be "tanto escualido"..rather sparse..or as GoogleTranslate says.."so scrawny"or "a bit skinny". VACATION IN MEXICO

From My FB feed......Looking at my blog stats to see Who in the World is interested in Isla Mujeres news & photos (in English). The US always leads, with Mx in second and then Canada (Canada's stats rise in direct coorelation to their temps dropping).Lately France is neck & neck w Canada & occasionally leading!..and Russia is close behind !?.., dropping UK from their usual 4th place. Surprisingly in #9 & 10 for the past month are China & Iran!! (It gives me top ten daily/weekly/monthly/all time) This week Romania and Poland are #9 & 10, with China in 8th and Germany 7th, just behind Russia. There are direct flights from the UK, Germany, France, & Russia to Cancun. Last time I had hits from China, on of my Isla-Canadian neighbors was visiting there. Quien sabe, but it is kinda interesting, to me to wonder who these folks are & what they think of the conglomeration of photos & info & odd comments I publish daily....

Daily Update: Wow was yesterday tough. People always ask me how hard is it to let the dogs go. My answer is that I’m just glad they are getting a loving home but every once in a while one of them breaks my heart. Guapo did that yesterday. I hand fed that cutie three meals a day for a month. At some times I didn’t think he would make it, the infection was so bad, and then he would rally. I will miss Guapo forever; he’s such a sweet, special, guy. But he’s in a loving forever home with Cathy and I know he will be cared for and loved. Dharma is almost home too, she’s waiting in Florida for a flight to Ohio where Robin will give her a wonderful home.

Regatta's Arrival
Por Esto's article about the Regatta Sol al Sol 2013 just says that the Navy boats  Yucatan PC 224", and MLB-SB-103 are awaiting their arrival, and gives the same information about the Captain's Cup event at the Casa de las Rocas on May first, so I checked the Regatta website, going to the tracking page HERE,   where it shows that the yachts began arriving Sunday evening around ~10pm EDT (I think that is ~9pm Isla time. It is in English. There are different categories, and the times are adjusted, so the order of arrival may differ from the order of the winners.).

Successful Event "In Search Of The Lost Treasure Of Mundaca"

REALIZAN CON ÉXITO EL EVENTO “EN BUSCA DEL TESORO PERDIDO DE MUNDACA”

Dozens of children enjoyed an event held by the Parks & Museums department in coordination with the DIF social service agency called “En Busca del Tesoro Perdido de Mundaca”, which I would translate as "Seeking the Lost Treasure of Mundaca", but I like GoogleTranslate's: "Raiders of the Lost Treasure of Mundaka". This is part of the DIF 'diffusers' program, where children participate in recreational and environmental activities, and learn about children's rights, and share their knowledge and experience with other children. The children and their parents toured the Hacienda Mundaca, learning about the history of this pirate, who is now a part of the cultural history of the island. They formed teams and assisted with cleaning up the park. They enjoyed refreshments and planted coconut palms in designated areas of the estate. They had a search for the lost treasure of Mundaca, and received prizes after finding the chests. They met the mascot from the Tortugranja (Turtle 'farm' Conservatory), who is named Cary. Previously, contest was held to name the mascot, which was won by Nicole Preciado Calderón. In Spanish, a hawksbill turtle is a Carey, and it also stands for "Cari" from carismática, cariñosa and caribeña, which means charismatic, caring, and Caribbean. The design of the image, or costume of the mascot was done by the other winner of that contest, Nicole Preciado Calderón. The event began at 8:30 am, but it doesn't mention which day.  Source: Muncipal website

Program Exchanging Recyclables For Food Returns
This article in Quequi/Carlos Gasca dated April 28 reports the state program "Recycling Trash for Food" took place yesterday beginning at 8am at the Green Dome in colonia Salinas, where hundreds of Islanders lined up to participate, with boxes & bags in their arms. They exchanged cardboard, metal, glass and other materials for food until the event concluded after 11am. Residents comments about how this program helps them with family expenses and they will miss it when it is suspended. In Diario Respuesta/Jesus Molina the article about this event in colonia Salina Chica notes the importance of the inclusion of children in this program, which also aims to educate residents about separating trash for recycling. A resident of colonia Caribeña, Juana Chimay, commented that her husband is out of work, so when they heard the announcement of this upcoming event, they began collecting recyclable trash from the streets, and she thanked the Governor for this program, saying it helps the poorest people on the island.

Clean Up Advised At Garrafon
Diario Respuesta/Jesus Molina reports a complaint was received by telephone from Islander Mario López, about trash and brush at Garrafon Park, which is near the complainants home. The reporter visited the overlook of the ecopark at the southeastern coast of the isle, and found weeds and trash that needed removal, as well as trash bins in need of repair.  Diario QRoo/Manuel Valdez reported having received a complaint, visiting the site, and observing trash and overgrown weeds that need attention. He said the litter bins lack tops, and there are potholes in the parking area. Both reporters noted that this is a popular tourist attraction, with an exceptional view, but this inattention to maintenance is likely to make a bad impression on visitors.

 Watch Your Step
Diario Respuesta/Jesus Molina reported that downtown merchant Juanito Zarape complained about "Planters that have become broken, areas of cobblestone that have depressions, and there are tops of  drains (tapas de los registros)  that may break at any time". The reporter says that the merchants requested his presence to complain to the media, noting that there are covers to the electric accesses are broken or lacking, which are a public hazard. The merchants commented that the items with the "duck" ("patito") trademark are "bien baratos" or 'cheap', and say that although the municipal authorities have done renovations, these items are damaged now.

Fled After Hitting Parked Vehicle
Authorities are investigating the whereabouts of the driver of the black Altima that ran into a parked van at ~5am on Saturday morning, leaving both vehicles in "malas condiciones" (bad shape). The police received a report of the crash which occurred in colonia Miraflores, some meters from the Laguna Makax fishing cooperative. The black Altima lacks license plates, and the driver fled, leaving "los envases de cervezas" behind (containers of beer) in the abandoned car, so it is presumed the driver was drinking. The vehicle was impounded. The article notes that there is "reliable data" about the whereabouts of the driver, and that the vehicle is 'apparently' owned by a food vendor who uses it for selling food, and that 'according to gathered information' the son of the vendor was drinking, lost control, and was fortunate nothing worse happened and that no one was in the road, except the van, which was properly parked (Camioneta can mean van or truck or SUV.). Becky Bowman McHugh Iguana goes into a hardware store. Seriously. There's no punch line. We watched the iguana run from shop to shop for about a half hour while we drank white mocha frappes at Mogagua.
In the comments Becky notes when the critter tried to go into Cricket Grillo and Osario's, the clerks chased him off with their brooms & he tried another coupla shops.

Maybe s/he's expecting to come into some money soon and figuring out how to spend it. Or trying to be adopted as Store Mascot...with little success.
