There will be no new permits for boats offering whale shark tours, only renewals LINK
CONANP (National Commission of Protected Natural Areas) will renew the 240 permits for operators offering tours to swim with and observe the whale sharks, but will not be granting any new concessions, according to the Regional Director of the Yucatan Peninsula and the Mexican Caribbean, Ricardo Gómez Lozano.
He said last season a total of 320 vessels requested permits, but since some did not comply with the basic safety measures, their requests were denied. Mr. Gomez Lozano said that last year was a successful season, when no more than 80 boats per day were providing this service, meaning they were not reaching the limit of 120 boats daily.

April 24 It is noted that this statistic includes both the island and the Continental Zone, but does not include those guests who are staying in 'irregular' (not legal) homes and apartments who are not reporting their rentals and paying the required 3% lodging tax, which are generally promoted on the internet in the United States and Canada.
In Isla Mujeres, many apartments and houses are being rented through Airbnb, which are offered on the internet and available at a single click, which causes displeasure among the established hotel industry, who consider this as unfair competition.
It is noted that many visitors are arriving with luggage, for overnight stays, who are often foreigners, in comparison to the Easter holiday period when many of the visitors were national tourists.
The golf cart rental agencies report that demand is nearly 100 percent, and tourists arriving at noon were having difficulty finding a cart. Taxi drivers and drivers in general have been complaining about the number of concessions granted in recent years, without any previous studies, and they say that the increased number of carts has turned the traffic into chaos, because the roads have become saturated by carts. It is hoped that the new SINTRA delegate, Isis Moreales Melendez, will regulate the situation.
Damage to the marine ecosystem

City Council alderman for the MORENA party, Roberto Martinez Aragon, filed a complaints with PROFEPA alleging damage to the ecosystem and marine pollution caused by the excess number of boats in the small protected area by Farito, because the kinetic energy from the boats raises sediment which is deposited on the coral reefs, causing an imbalance in the ecosystem. He also filed a complaint with PROFEPA about potential damage to the ecosystem from the bungalows whose construction has apparently been cancelled.

A woman who delivered at the Community Hospital, had an 'exaggerated' episiotomy incision, which later affected her ability to defecate. She learned she would need reconstructive surgery which would cost more than 70,000 pesos. The family complained repeatedly to the director of the hospital, who agreed to intervene on Wednesday, if an anesthesiologist can be brought from Cancun.
The young woman's mother explained her daughter went to the Community Hospital on April 9th at 6am, expecting the gynecologist to arrive on that Monday morning, but he did not. By 10am, she had dialated to seven centimeters, and didn't know what to do since the OB-Gyn had still not arrived. Dr. Osorio arrived and did an ultrasound. She said, "The baby had a very agitated heart rate, but incredibly, neither the director, administrator, nor anyone else was taking charge, and we decided we would be better off in Cancun, but in the end she stayed. There was a 'parade of interns' who examined her, until they finally took her to the delivery room, where she gave birth by a normal delivery, except the incision that was made (episiotomy) was exaggerated, they did it badly. At first everything seemed fine, but, actually, on Tuesday, the OB-Gyn only looked at her halfway and didn't check the wound."
She said that afterward when her daughter had problems defecating, she took her to a privae gynecologist who said the the episiotomy had reached the anus, causing a third degree tear that could only be repaired by reconstructive surgery costing more than 70,000 pesos. The family doesn't have that much money, so she has again gone to meet with the Director of the Community Hospital. She had an appointment with him on Tuesday at 11am, but he was not in his office, and Dr Blancas responded to her complaint, explaining that the Director had to attend a District meeting to discuss various issues, including the resignation of an anesthesiologis, who together with a male and a female doctor, had all stopped working at the Community Hospital because of the low pay.
Dr Blancas undertook to attend to the young woman as soon as possible, planning to provide reconstructive surgery on Wednesday, and apparently it has been confirmed that an anesthesiologist from Cancun will cross to attend to some pending needs, including the young woman.

As part of the events for Earth Day, which is celebrated on April 22, a reforestation campaign was carried out in colonia La Gloria, in addition to the mangrove cleaning campaign that took place on Monday, April 23rd. In addition, the children of Andres Quintana Roo Elementary School enjoyed a play at 7am about the importance of water conservation and care, The play was presented by Aguakan, to raise awareness among the students, and also as an early celebration of Children's day.
These three activities were done by the Department of Ecology and Environment, in coordination with CONANP and Aguakan. Later, the central road dividers of Paseo de las Aves, the main avenue in colonia La Gloria, were replanted with assistance from Naval personnel. The Director of Ecology, Carlos Barranco Garcia, explained that native plants of the region were planted, mostly ciricote, which is one of the trees that is endemic to the island and has a strong resistance to the salinity, which ensures a high degree of survival. He said they also planted icacos, which is a species of the island which has been gradually lost on municipal property, and there are few specimens growing on the isle. They also planted kerpis and chit palms, which are resistant to the salt that permeates the environment.

The "Alas de Aguila" foundation gave a donation to the municipal DIF of $6895, providing support for the fourth time, which was presented at a meeting at the restaurant of the hotel Villas del Palmar, with support from the timeshare owners of this hotel chain and others. The President of the foundation, Eva Contreras Sandoval, said the assistance is offered with the sole interest of contributing to the development of the municipalities of Isla Mujeres and Benito Juarez (Cancun) to support those who need it by providing them with a better quality of life.
The "Alas de Aguila" organization also gave donations to the "Association of Parents of Children with Mental Deficiencies of Benito Juárez",, to the school "La Antorcha", to "With your help Yes You change a Life A.C"., "Life and Family of Quintana Roo A.C"., "City of Joy Foundation A.C"., and the Red Cross Isla Mujeres. (Asociación de Padres de Familia con Hijos Deficientes Mentales de Benito Juárez A.C. (APAFHDEM), a la escuela “La Antorcha”, Con tu Ayuda Sí Cambias una Vida A.C., Vida y Familia de Quintana Roo A.C., Fundación Ciudad de la Alegría A.C., y Cruz Roja Isla Mujeres.)

Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Sunday, April 22 Earth Day Action for Isla is having their third annual cleanup event. The past two years divers and snorkelers cleaned under the downtown piers, and groups picked up trash along the Caribbean beaches.

For the third year in a row, Action for Isla is happy to announce that we will be hosting our big Earth Day Clean-up, to bring awareness of this problem to our residents, and unite our community to work towards Ending Plastic Pollution. We will be tackling the waste build up on both land and sea with an in-water Dive Against Debris and simultaneous beach clean up!
🌎In 2016, 62 volunteers got together to remove 650kgs of waste from our beaches and seas, last year both numbers grew
with 148 people collecting and sorting a whopping 1,090kgs of trash!!
This year we hope to go even bigger! And we need your help!
