ISLA MUJERES, 27 de noviembre.-
There has been intense erosion at the area of North Beach known as "Playa Sol", as a result of the deterioration of the 'whales' protecting it, and now a palapa of ~30 square meters, and a palapa bar which was vandalized, are about to fall down. The erosion is associated with the first several cold fronts of the season.

Removal of limestone

Sustraen piedra caliza

In the colonia Caridad del Cobre an area about 20 meters wide has been drilled out of the limestone with a machine, which is prohibited by environmental regulations, but PROFEPA (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection) has not intervened. There are no state or municipal permits on display, such as those issued by SEMARNAT (Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources) and it is assumed that inspectors have not verified that they have been obtained, and that officials of the municipal Urban Development agency.have not inspected the damage. Residents in the colonia say this work began some weeks ago, and they say it is ecocide by developers of housing projects on the island.

Cold front damages North Beach
Frente frió daña Playa Norte. [+] Ver mas (photos at link)
Strong winds and tides associated with cold front #14 are causing beach erosion, which has eroded the base of the restaurant ChiChis, because the wall that protected the property fell in 2005 with the hurricane "Wilma". Remnants of the construction that was built decades ago can still be seen. Carlos Cervera, who is one of the most affected, has expressed an interest in investing resources after hiring a specialized company earlier this year, but municipal authorities have not backed this plan. Meanwhile, Joaquin Rios Coss, Nautibeach Condo manager, said the geotubes near their property have been well maintained and are in good condition. "We have no problems with erosion," he said.

Fishermen still stuck in port

Because of a cold front affecting the region, the fishing fleet of Isla Mujeres has been unable to work while the port has been closed for small boats since Monday, except for a few hours when it was open. There are about 200 boats affected among the five fishing cooperatives, as well as the boats offering tours, diving, and other services. The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) forecasts are predicting the arrival of cold front #15 this weekend.
When interviewing some of the seamen, crew members Juan Arevalo and Nicolas Chay responded that the weather has made it difficult for them to feed their families, and they have resorted to loans to pay for school and the needs of their children. Nicolas Chay said, "It is a good thing there are other jobs available. I am going to help in the kitchen of a friend's business, and I think I will look for a job working in the afternoon-evening to help pay the bills, because fishing is done in the mornings."

Island celebrations for patron saint

After the Mass tonight at the church of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception, the icon of the same name will be taken down from her niche for a procession thru the main streets downtown, accompanied by hundreds of parishioners. There will be fireworks and a dance-celebration (a  vaquería) at the esplanade of the church. The activities will continue through December 8th and will include participation by 28 unions and groups of fishermen, tour providers, youth groups, women's groups, and neighborhood groups.
The Mega-caravan is scheduled for Monday, December 7 at 6:30am from the church to the colonia neighborhoods. On December 8th at 10am, the traditional first communion for many children will be held, and the bishop of the Cancun-Chetumal region is expected, Monseñor Pedro Pablo Elizondo. Local priest, Raul Sanchez Alonso said there will be daily family oriented activities on the esplanade with cultural activities so that tourists can witness the traditions which increase the level of faith. He invited all Catholic believers to participate in these group events which offer hope and the opportunity to commune with God.

The eastern sea wall is also receiving the effects of this front, and with start of the season of the nortes (fronts from the north that often have strong winds). There are also  the effects of el Nino in 2016 to consider, and residents including Gerardo Magana Barragan say "We need to be prepared." He said the wall is exposed to weakening because of deterioration of the gaviones in some sections. (These are cages of rocks built below the sea wall).

   Isla Mujeres on TV
Renowned Argentine chef Francisco del Piero is filming 13 episodes in Cancun and Isla Mujeres. This info was already translated. This is occurring at the same time that part of North Beach is suffering erosion due to deterioration of geotubes installed nearly a decade ago after damage from Hurricane Wilma.
