THE CITY OF ISLA MUJERES TO IMPLEMENT MUNICIPAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST DENGUE, CHIKUNGUNYA AND ZIKA The government of municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis is committed to having a healthy municipality.
(Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, April 1, 2017) .- For a healthy municipality, starting this Monday, April 3, the "Municipal Campaign for a Dengue Free Island, Chikungunya and Zika" will be implemented with inspectors going house to house to remove junk and unused objects that can serve as breeding grounds for the larvae of the mosquitoes which are the transmitters of these diseases.
Juana Milián González, Director of Health, said the Mayor gave these instructions because he is committed to maintaining a municipality that is healthy and free of diseases transmitted by the mosquito "Aedes Aegypti". Starting on Monday and for the whole week, this campaign will take place, beginning in colonia La Gloria and going to the other colonias.
He explained that from 9 am to 2 pm community brigades will visit the colonias, house by house, to verify that yards to not have junk and objects that can accumulate water when it rains, and serve as breeding grounds for mosquito larvae. He asked the residents to cooperate and work together with the authorities to remove these objects, which wil also contributes to keeping the municipality clean.
He said, "We cordially invite citizens to be aware of the campaign and to help us with the removal of those objects that can serve as reservoirs of water. Remember that prevention is everyone's responsibility."
"The municipal Director of Health also reported that after five in the afternoon, personnel with the Vectors Department of the Ministry of Health will pass street by street to perform thermal sprays (fumigation) with which will reinforce these actions for prevention and eradication of the mosquito which can transmit dengue, zika and chikungunya.
"The authorities of the three levels of government are committed to taking care of the health of island families, and at the municipal level, President Juan Carrillo Soberanis has instructed us not to lower our guard when it comes to prevention," concluded Milián González .

Navy rescued yacht that was adrift

The Navy received a call from a cruise ship who had received a distress call from the “Calypsa Fuentes”, saying they were without power. The Navy sent out the Uxmal & found the small yacht 71 nautical miles from Isla Mujeres, with two crew members aboard, and towed them to the island. No information was provided about the crew, but indications are that they are Mexican. In recent days there have been strong winds from the east-southeast, with waves over two meters high, which have kept the small fishing boats from working.
Grouper fishing ban ended

After a two month ban on grouper fishing, the season reopened on April 1st, but the fleet of small fishing boats have been restricted to port due to strong winds from the east-southeast. The ban began on February 1st.
Isla Mujeres will host regional AA event

On October 28 and 29, the Isla Mujeres Alcoholics Anonymous group will host a regional event, which is expected to have 250 attendees. It will take place at the dome of the taxi drivers in colonia La Gloria and at the high school Colegio Bachilleres. Currently, there are more than 120,000 AA groups around the world, of which 60 percent are in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. There are approximately 15,000 "traditional" groups in Mexico.
The topics of the meeting will be include the activity of internal strengthening of the community to be able to offer help to those who have problems with alcohol; about effectively transmitting the message to the general public; and the necessary "spiritual growth" that each member must experience in order to bear their responsibilities.
The special guests will talk about the national proposal offered by Central Mexican General Services of Alcoholics Anonymous, Civil Association, and the help it provides to other countries which lack the structure and experience which exist in Mexico.
Isla Mujeres teams ready for the Bimbo Cup Tournament

The primary schools Cesar Mendoza Santana (on the island) and Enrique Estrella Oxte (on the mainland) will represent the male and female categories for Isla Mujeres in the Bimbo Cup 2017 (Copa Bimbo 2017). Both teams will represent the municipality in the state competition on April 29 in Cancun. The Cesar Mendoza Santana team has red uniforms and are coached by professor Vladimir Estrella, who is assisted by Luis Alocer. They will be preparing for the next four weeks (for this soccer tournament).
Basketball game rescheduled
The basketball games that were scheduled for this weekend for the semifinal phase of the league tournament will take place on April 8 and 9th. On those dates, the Islanders of Cozumel and the team of the Universidad Modelo of Merida will return to play the Cahuameros of Isla Mujeres Nueva Generacion and the Dorados of Playa del Carmen.
