Drástica medida para evitar gastos excesivos

Manuel VALDEZ
ISLA MUJERES, 5 de septiembre.-The large event that was scheduled in the Town Square has been cancelled and will be replaced by a single formal event, in association with the austerity measures that apply throughout Quintana Roo. The report will still be given, in compliance with the Law, but overspending on logistics is being avoided, which would have included rental chairs, audio-visual projector, and all that goes with an event for a thousand people. Cancellation of the event,  may save ~500,000 pesos. The report on the activities of the last year in office will take place on Sept. 19 at the end of the City Council meeting, in that room.

Inspectores aseguran que sólo es un monitoreo en la zona

Manuel VALDEZ
ISLA MUJERES, 5 de septiembre.-A visit by SEMARNAT staff caused concern among the seamen of the "Barrio de Pescadores" located between the Posada beach and the restaurant "Velazquez", that they may be evicted from this area where for decades they have docked their boats and sold fish. The SEMARNAT staff said it was an inspection to develop a database for monitoring the effects of weather conditions on the coasts. This gives them  the opportunity to evaluate the situation in real time, to consider what can be done to reverse damage such as loss of sand. They said there will be set points and monitoring stations. The fishermen are considering this as a sign that they may be evicted from the beach they have used for many years, noting there are fewer beaches for the enjoyment of Island families. They say they will defend this space and have started collecting signatures showing support from groups and citizens. Seaman Figueroa Sanchez commented about concessionaire Ignacio Povedano and his attorney Rolando Pastrana, whose brother was present the entire time the SEMARNAT inspectors were taking measurements, and then offered them a seafood 'feast' afterwards.

Fieles escoltarán a Virgen del Cobre

    0 05 de septiembre de 2013

Por Carlos Gasca- Quequi.- About 600 boats are expected to participate in this event scheduled for Saturday morning, including three major vessels provided by Ultramar, Magana, and an individual. Each year hundreds of people attend this religious event and sing songs, accompanying the Virgin of Charity of Cobre who is the patron saint of fisherman, to Contoy Island. This event has occurred annually for fourteen years. The image of the Virgin was created by sculptor Meynando Puentes Girón, in Santiago, Cuba during the administration of Fidel Villanueva Madrid, and the first procession with it was organized in 1999. A chapel was built for it and it is worshiped in its niche by the fishermen camping on the island. This says the boats will depart at nine in the orning on Saturday. Previous reports said 8:30.

Colegio Bachilleres High School on strike, Middle School teachers are working

Cobach se para, Secundaria 1 labora+] Ver mas
On Friday the teachers of Benito Juarez middle school are planning to work, under protest,  to not affect more students, while the teachers of Bachilleres high school have joined  the work stoppage. The preschool and primary school teachers plan to remain on strike and to not return until the government favorably resolves their complaints, said Selene Aldana Gonzales, director of Education and member of the movement. Activities at the high school were suspended at noon on Thursday until further notice.
Committee members say the reform violates Article 14 of the Constitution, and they object to the unilateral and authoritarian procedures which would allow them to be immediately separated from their jobs without the right of a hearing under label laws, denying them the right to reinstatement or payment of compensation of wages for unjustified separation and without awards by the Federal Conciliation and Arbitration Tribunal. They say this 'educational reform' is actually 'against labor reform'. and does not allow the participation of education workers. They acknowledge that the system needs change and reform for the sake of the students.
There are seven points that they want resolved, including improvement to the infrastructure, equality in hours of 'descarga' (time off?), and issues concerning the process of teacher classification (?) (proceso de basificación docente), process of teacher reclassification,  programs of teacher performance incentives, retroactive salary payments, and SAR Saving System Retirement payments (which have been held since November 2012).

Dolphin remains in captivity
Descartan que sea dada a parque marino+] Ver mas
Although PROFEPA officials had announced they planned to release the dolphin on Tuesday or Wednesday, she remains in captivity at the Tortugranja facilities, despite a remarkable recovery. However her liver is not yet back to normal. She has been nicknamed "Pepina" and is ~18 years old, of the species Steno brenadensis or "Rough Tooth". She ended up near the coast in Cancun and was likely to die, because of a bad infection that had severely affected her liver and caused her to stop eating, said an expert from Dolphin Discovery. He said dolphins of this species are not used in their type of facilities, especially when they are not born in captivity. They are trying to prevent her becoming accustomed to humans, so they avoid contact with her and throw her food from afar and don't give it to her mouth.  Her circuits around the pen have become increasingly fast and from time to time she is seen jumping half out of the water, to the delight of tourists and locals who are fortunate enough to be present when this occurs. When the specialists draw blood or give medications, she is very quiet and still and seems to realize it is for her own good. The Dolphin Discovery staff member said they will return on Friday or Tuesday, and hopefully by then they will be able to provide a date when she can be taken back to the sea, with the authorization of PROFEPA officials.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are nesting on the eastern beaches in the wee hours. There are Tortugranja personnelmonitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are blue and red crabs migrate to & from the sea during the full moons, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle & in Sac Bajo
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
