Ahuyentan al gran pez
Promoters and boaters offering whale shark swimming tours are complaining about large yachts that are endangering the fish and the tourists. People descend from these yachts on wave runners, causing the fish to dive down for fear of being hurt. Then tourists with the licensees do not get an opportunity to see the animal, and the lack of expertise of the yachters has caused  whale shark injuries.  There are concerns that the whale sharks may disappear from this area and seek alternative routes. Licensee Juan de Dios Canul said "We have training and permits, but these other people are doing things that scare the whale sharks."

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are nesting on the eastern beaches in the wee hours. There are Tortugranja personnelmonitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are blue and red crabs migrate to & from the sea during the full moons, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle & in Sac Bajo
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

David Daniel's photo.
David arrived back at MaraVilla Caribe yesterday & captioned this amazing (photo, that he took from the roof:
Acogiendo Tormenta (The Welcoming Storm)
I love the fireworks show that Mexico puts on to welcome you home. As we sat on the roof watching the storm, the breeze off the Caribbean reminded me just how much I need to be here.
Nearby, you could see all of the fishermen working their nets in the flashes. Knowing that they too were ever vigilant about the same storm...watching to make sure it did not turn back to the south... so that they could ply the waters for the evening's catch.
What a fantastic way to welcome me home...

*** Isla Mujeres Student Scholarship program ***
Several students graduated or will be soon so there have been new students added to the Isla Mujeres Student Scholarship program. With the new students there is a need for more sponsors. There are two levels of sponsorship - $30 or $55 a month.

Citlali is a student starting college. She has one sponsor at the $30 level, but we would like to support her at $150/month, so need between 3 and 5 more sponsors.

Brayan is a new high school student. We have one sponsor - at $30 level, so we need one more sponsor. Brayan's mom is Cecelia, the heavy-set woman who is active with the bead ladies - friendly and has taken some English classes, you may have met her.

If want more information about the program or want to become a sponsor please email me. This is a great way to give back to the people of Isla Mujeres as well as life changing for the students and their families.
  • High School is not free in Mexico. The cost is approximately $50 per month and on an island where the average daily wage is $8, this can be a huge strain for some families. We have matched up people ...

  1. I've said it before - the whale sharks are eventually going to be driven from the area due to the constant boat tours. Leo
