Turistas arriban a la isla para festejar la Independencia de México

Manuel VALDEZ
ISLA MUJERES, 15 de septiembre.-Leer más...      The weather improved significantly on Sunday and an increase in the number of tourists arriving was noted. The beaches were full of vacationers and the restaurants and bars were offering attractive discounts and specials. Hotel occupancy on Sunday was estimated to be 50 percent, and there were many Mexican tourists visiting for the day. This is a long holiday weekend, called a "puente" which literally means 'bridge'.
The weather was not quite so cooperative last evening for the Grito celebrations. I wasn't there, but  friends reported that it began to rain as the Grito ceremony was about the start, and the Mayor was going to delay it, but the crowd called out to "Do it NOW!" and he responded to popular demand. Some folks held chairs over their heads to protect them from the rain. Most of the fireworks went off before they got wet. There was a break in the rain for about ten minutes and the folks I know who were there packed up and moved on to other parties, or their beds. Por Esto reports the band played and people danced, especially the kids. (It has been dry this morn & there is some sunshine and blue skies, and plenty of clouds, with a nice breeze and relatively comfortable temperatures.)
The Grito of Dolores is a Cry of Independence, from 1810 when Hidalgo called for the people to revolt from Spain. Currently, every Sept. 15 around 11pm, the Mayors (and Governors and President),  ring a bell from a balcony or rooftop above the town square, and give a traditional speech which includes the names of heroes of the war for independence. This followed by a threefold shout of ¡Viva México!, more bell ringing, and waving of the Mexican flag, and then they may play the National Anthem.

ISLA MUJERES, 15 de septiembre.- .The General Hospital of Isla Mujeres has made an agreement with the IQM, Q Roo Institute of Women of Benito Juarez (Cancun's municipality) to provide services to the women of Isla Mujeres. The Director of the General Hospital, David Valenzo Loaeza explained that services were no longer offered in Isla Mujeres after the module closed, so he contacted the neighboring municipality. On Tuesday, with participation by the psychologists, they will have a workshop on Crisis Intervention for women who have suffered violence or other trauma. After identifying someone who needs psychological support, appointments can be scheduled. This is intended to benefit the general public, and involves a psychologist and a lawyer, with orientation services offered on Tuesdays from 10am to 4pm.

Por Esto estimates there were about a thousand people, including tourists and islanders, at the town square for the traditional Grito de Independencia, who later enjoyed the rhythms of Super Crack. Families began arriving at 8pm, and the activities began at 9pm with cultural activities and folkloric dancing, as well as the crowning of the ambassadors. At 11pm the Mayor gave the grito "Viva Mexico" from the balcony of the Town Hall (Palacio Municipal), and there were fireworks. There were over 70 police officers providing security, as well as assistance from the Navy and Civil Protection agency.

Below is a traditional Independence day meal called Chile en Nogada...a poblano chile  sporting the colors of Mexico. The sauce is made with walnuts, and the filling is usually pork picadillo, which is ground meat flavored with finely diced vegetables, and aromatic spices, and sometimes fruit.  In this pic, the red is from pomegranate seeds. Buen Provecho! mean bon apetit...enjoy your meal.

Sea Glass Visions - Sea Glass Jewelry Crafts Sea Pottery · This is some rare and interesting sea glass. It's crackled sea glass that was found in California. This is the explanation that was given to me about how it is created...crackle sea glass usually 'happens' when glass objects end up in trash fires or campfires before ending up in the Sea. The actual crackle happens when hot glass is submerged/covered in cold water...the surface of the glass "crackles" then refuses while the glass is still hot.
