Ya resienten la baja afluencia de visitantes

Manuel VALDEZ
ISLA MUJERES, 1 de septiembre.- Demand has dropped sharply, by an estimated ~70%, for services of tourism providers such as hotels, restaurants, boaters, and merchants. The decline began on August 15 and the slowest season will continue through September and October. Mr Pablo Gonzalez explained that merchants who are prepared can hold out until the winter season, but those who are living paycheck to paycheck have to seek other employment options or just close their businesses. Some offer bargains to the few customers that come, but they have to redouble their efforts to convince the tourists to buy some souvenirs.

ISLA MUJERES, 1 de septiembre.-  A film crew is spending long hours filming with the whale sharks near Islas Contoy and Holbox for the movie “Hágase tu voluntad” starring Itatí Cantoral and Damián Alcázar, who are staying at an exclusive hotel in Isla Mujeres, and their presence has been confirmed by the staff of the Tourism Promotion Trust. Yesterday during the early hours the actors were having scenes with the largest fish in the world.  The reporter heard that the filming will officially begin in March, but they are doing these scenes while the whale sharks are visiting en masse, and that Ms Cantoral is playing a woman suffering from cancer. The reporter wrote this example will certainly help many women who suffer from this problem, and  the film will also show the beauty of the Mexican Caribbean, and as part of it; Isla Mujeres.  Leer más...

The accident occurred in La Gloria on Isla Contoy Avenue (On facebook it was reported to be near the la Gloria Super Express grocery store.). T.he police and Red Cross paramedics reviewed the passengers to assure no one was harmed. The damage will interrupt service and inconvenience dozens of people, including students, since this is the only Turicun bus in operation. Dejan destino ante amenaza de huracanes

    0 01 de septiembre de 2013

Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.- The head of the Chamber of Commerce said the slowest months are September, October, November, and December, until improvements begin on December 26th. He said this slow season occurs annually due to hurricane activity in the area, noting that the two most devastating hurricanes occured in September ("Gilbert", 1988) and October ("Wilma", 2005). While little can be done about the presence of these natural phenomena, some entrepreneurs continue to promote their businesses and to expect better things in December. Others take voluntary 'vacations' to avoid lay offs.

There have been 22 complaints this year, between the Public Ministry, Municipal Police, Judicial Police, and General Hospital. Of these, 15 are in progress and seven have been concluded. Mauricio Roger Barbosa, who is in charge of the office, said he thinks this location will give better access to islanders because it is located in the colonias, where people reside and can visit more easily.

Resumed issuing drivers licenses today, after two weeks of suspension

Due to a lack of special ink to make the paper prints of the licenses, they have been unable to process drivers license applicants. This is not the first time this has occurred, and this year there have been at least a dozen times when they stopped issuing drivers licenses, according to this report. The police chief announced on Friday that they are now issuing the documents, after two weeks of being unable to do so, due to a lack of special ink for the printer. Meanwhile they have not been sanctioning those driving without a license.

September/septiembre In Isla Mujeres

September is the "Mes Patrio" because Independence Day is the 16th. There are carts & individuals selling flags & other red, white, and green items.

Locally, septiembre is wryly nicknamed "septihambre" ("septy EM bray"  vs  "septy AHM bray"), because hambre means hunger & this is a tough month economically.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are nesting on the eastern beaches in the wee hours. There are Tortugranja personnelmonitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are blue and red crabs migrate to & from the sea during the full moons, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle & in Sac Bajo
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

Daily Update: This is the puppy of yesterday’s mom, absolutely adorable. They were given up together. I’m just happy that they’re in good hands now. Okay so I have a challenge for everyone. I’ve been trying to come up with something catchy that essentially says – a puppy will be a dog soon – or - if you don’t want a dog, don’t get a puppy. If I can find a saying that works I thought it would be a great t-shirt. So if any of you can think of a clever way to say this please let me know. Two other things: I want to mention the shelter challenge. If we get enough votes we will win $10,000.00 and wow – could we do a lot with that. So please vote every day at www.shelterchallenge.com. It’s really easy.

Next weekend the annual boat procession will take hundreds of Islanders to Isla Contoy, with the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre, who is considered protective of seamen. The original icon is in Cuba, and that is where this one was sculpted.

The 'main' Virgin icon in Isla Mujeres is in the Immaculate Concepcion Church on the town square. Here is some information about some of the other Virgins that are celebrated here, from a previous blog post.

Other Virgins of Isla Mujeres
 By Went Coastal
Virgin of El Farito

The Virgin of el Farito (The little lighthouse, which is in the bay 1500 meters offshore, on the little isle called La Carbonera, pictured below. The Virgin is underwater) She was originally placed there in 1966, donated by Pablo Bush Romero and is the Virgen del Carmen. There was an annual boat procession with fishermen offering flowers and coins  in hopes of  good health,  a good, productive  year, and a better life reports Isla Mujeres Hoy and historian Fidel Villanueva. She was stolen and replaced in 1994. This is a popular tourist attraction for divers and snorkelers. When the boat tours cannot leave the bay because of weather, they often can continue to offer tours to El Farito.  Photo Dive Isla Mujeres.
 Virgin of Caridad de Cobre

This is the Virgin of Charity/Caridad of Cobre (a town in Cuba). She was made in Cuba and is the patron saint of the fishermen. Each year around ~September 10th she is taken to Isla Contoy in a boat processional that can include over 100 boats. This year there were larger boats available for the tourists and residents also. She returns quietly to Isla Mujeres in March after the conclusion of the lobster season.

"Virgen de Fátima"

The Virgin of  Fátima is the patron of Rancho Viejo who have had celebrations to her for over 40 years that include traditional Mayan dishes such as Relleno Molenegro, escabeche, and the beverage balche, shared by the community.
Virgin of Guadalupe
This is the chapel/capella Guadulpana in Salina Chica where the main festival to the Virgin of Guadalupe takes place annually on the 12th of December. The chapel is across the street from Mango Cafe. There are shrines honoring this most popular Virgin in Mexico on many houses around the isle which are decorated for this holiday. There is also a celebration at her shrine at the taxi stand.  Photo by Erick Wand for Google Earth.
