CULTO DESDE 1999
Lunes, 02 de Septiembre de 2013 22:17
The current Isla Mujeres 'cult' (this word doesn't seem to have the negative connotations that it does in English) of Our Lady of Charity of Cobre dates back to 1999, when its first boat procession was organized to take the image to the chapel in the camps at Isla Contoy. (Cobre is a town in Cuba LINK to wiki re this Virgin/Our Lady of Charity.) The first image of the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre came to the Americas with Pedro de Riviera Sarmiento, to Cartagena de Indias; while in Isla Mujeres the first image arrived in the late nineteenth century with a member of the Martinez Pastranas family. It was officially worshiped beginning in 1925, after there was protection from a hurricane associated with it, and then it moved into the possession of Cuban fishermen. In 1999, the Contoy processions resumed, with the Virgin of Charity of Cobre in place of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception, as was once the tradition that persists year after year, although not with the confetti (? paraphernalia/ parafernalia) like before which can no longer be done because of protections afforded to the island since in became a National Park.

ISLA MUJERES, 2 de septiembre.-The procession of the Virgin of Charity to Contoy Island on Saturday is expected to involve more than 100 boats and is dependent on the weather. Although the City was unable to provide fuel, there will be at least ten boats to transport the tents other things needed for the mass and the fellowship gathering afterward on Contoy Island. The procession is expected to depart from the Port Authority pier at 8:30am and return to Isla Mujeres at 3:30pm. Those who wish to participate in this demonstration of Catholic faith should bring enough water, food, and appropriate clothing to spend a pleasant day after the religious activities.

New administration inheriting tons of trash
Heredará administración toneladas de basura
0 02 de septiembre de 2013 Due to the poor condition of the vehicles that transport trash, there are about 1500 tonnes of trash at the Trash Transfer facility. Last month the state assisted with the transfer of accumulated trash by loaning two vehicles. They removed about a 1000 tonnes, leaving ~500 tonnes to be transported. It appears this problem will not be resolved before the start of the next administration.

Complaint about trash not being collected [+] Ver mas
Por Esto points out areas where trash has not been adequately collected recently, and notes this makes a bad image, and is compounded when dogs get into the trash. There was trash in front of the Casa de Cultura awaiting pick up, as well as on a couple corners in colonia Salinas. The article attributes part of the problem to a lack of information about collection schedules. There are leaves and branches in a pile near the offices of Urban Development and Ecology.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are nesting on the eastern beaches in the wee hours. There are Tortugranja personnelmonitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills. The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony, and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!
There are blue and red crabs migrate to & from the sea during the full moons, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle & in Sac Bajo
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
