Yesterday morning summer camp group came  from Playa Aventuras, in the municpality of Tulum, and visited Isla Mujeres with 106 children, and 21 adults from the DIF Tulancingo de Bravo, Hidalgo, including three doctors, a swimming instructor, and counselors. They drove from Tulacingo, Hidalgo on Sunday, and reached the camp of Playa Aventuras where they enjoyed themselves until Tuesday, when they went to the archeological site of Coba, and the Wednesday they came to Isla Mujeres. In the evening they were returning to the camp and visiting Tulum, and Friday they will visit the Akuchen caves, the return on Saturday morning, when it will take 24 hours to reach Tulacingo. The DIF director explained that 80 percent of the children did not know the sea and were shocked and happy by this opportunity offered by the National DIF. The political parties have begun moving the campaign materials such as posters, banners, and placards. The political parties are fully aware of their responsibilities, and if they are not compliant the General Council will take appropriate actions to ensure compliance, such as removing the materials and charging the cost to the party who is responsible. The Election Law of the state of Quintana Roo allows 30 days to remove banners, and billboards, and to delete ads painted on fences.

A group of 90 children with the summer camp of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus  Iglesia Sagrado Corazón de Jesús,    spent a pleasant day at the Turtle Farm learning about sea turtles, as well as other marine animals. They did a simulation of digging up and reburying turtle eggs in artificial nests at the Tortugranja. They also enjoyed interacting with the new mascot "Cary" and singing with her. The enjoyed their healthy outing full of learning during one of their vacation days.

Poe Esto says hotel occupancy barely reached 45 percent, while there was an obvious increase of visitors to the island. At some golf cart rental agencies, all the carts were rented, and the beaches were busy. The reporter noted that there were members of the Navy patrolling the beaches, and women tanning in tiny bikinis. When commenting about the children visiting from Hidalgo, it is noted that upon arrival to the beach, the first thing they did was drop their belongings on the sand and run into the sea, under the supervision of the adults with them.

The tropical storm "Chantal" is not presenting any danger to Quintana Roo with its current trajectory, and thee are not restrictions on navigation, with good weather expected for the weekend. Potential rain or cloudy skies would be dependent on the track taken by the storm. Touristic and aquatic activities on and around Isla Mujeres have been taking place normally.

I have 'caught up' after lacking WIFI for several days. I translated the news from Sunday onward in individual posts. These are from Saturday, July 6 (when I just published the headlines).

IRRESPONSABILIDAD. La Dirección de Ecología brilla por su ausencia en este ecocidio. Irresponsibility: The Department of Ecology is conspicuous by its absence in this ecocide.

Construction material and sascab are being dumped at the Laguna Macax. This is an important location for boats to shelter during hurricane season. The mangroves have a fragile ecosystem and are important for the development of larvae of many species, as well as serving to help prevent erosion of sand from the beaches.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases will begin in about a month & be held periodically until early October.
Lately the water has been very calm and there have been many manta rays, with many swimming upside down, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins & turtles from the balcony, and lotsa big fish while snorkeling.

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
