The 'lancheros' have been so busy they are making two tours daily. Depending on the capacity of the vessel, they are taking 10 to 15 passengers per trip. The tours usually include a lunch with tikinxik grilled fish, plus tours of main beaches and other attractions. A  large group of teachers from Tehuantepc, Oaxaca enjoyed a tour. The increased number of tourists can be observed in the shops, restaurants, bars, and beaches, with the largest numbers at the North Beach areas called Playa Posada del Mar, Punta Norte, and El Rito.

Fifty beach cleaners (Who are probably not in this photo) are being laid off at the end of July, because the  resources for their salaries have not been received,  which were required for the commitments between the City and  ZOFEMAT. As part of the actions to stabilize the economic crisis in the final four months of this administration, the weekend medical assistants at the General Hospital are being laid off, as well as assisting staff for the quartermaster (personal de apoyo de intendencia), and some teachers at the primary schools and kindergartens.

Manuel VALDEZ
ISLA MUJERES, 25 de julio.- The tourism director, Isaac Sulu Martinez announced yesterday that hotel occupancy is at 60 percent, which is a 15 percent increase since the start of the summer holiday period. He discussed the need to promote Isla Mujeres as an overnight destination to the Mexican tourists, and noted the isle is an overnight destination that is popular with American tourists.

To Inherit debt
Heredarían deuda
First Councilman Julio Osorio estimated there will be a debt of 20 million pesos passed on to the next administration. (That's $1.6 million dollars at a 12.5 exchange rate. It is said there are ~16,000 people on the isle, which would be ~$100 each.) There is a bank loan for 15 million, and over 2 million in social work commitments to the fishermen, as well as payroll commitments that include the directors, council members, and department heads. There will be 28-29 million pesos in revenue before Sept 29th, and nearly 50 million pesos in general commitments, which should result in ~20 million in debt at the changeover.
Isla Mujeres has the means to overcome its financial crisis
IM tiene medios para superar su crisis financiera
Jose Guadalupe Gonzales is a critic of the new regional landfill, the 'misnamed' project called Parque de Tecnologia. He says Mayor elect Agapito Magana should consider renegotiating the contract with Benito Juarez municipality (Cancun) as a means to solve the City's financial crisis. He says if Isla Mujeres charged Cancun 50 centavos per kilo of  trash, this would create an annual income of 156 million pesos. Recycled items from the trash could generate another 70 million pesos, and together these amounts equal 93% of the governments annual budget of 242 million. He says the monthly fee of 200,000 pesos that was negotiated by Mayor Hugo Sanchez  is ridiculous.  He said Cancun has an average daily volume of 863 tonnes of trash.
 Crab protection begins
Arranca protección del cangrejo
There will be crab rescue operations as part of campaign to protect blue crabs in Isla Mujeres by  the  Comité de Ciudadano y Defensa Animal (CCDA), Citizen's Committee for Animal Protection. Young volunteers from the high school Colegio Bachilleres will be assisting and protecting the spawning crabs when they are crossing the roads in Sac Bajo and at the south end of the isle. They are currently working with the red crabs, with operations typically taking place for two or three hours, beginning at 10pm. They began a few days ago and estimate they have rescued over 800 red crabs and hermit crabs. There were crab rescue operations last year, and they have increased this year.

Turistas 'dan vida' a Isla Mujeres

There are rivers of people in the streets and around the isle enjoying its natural beauty. They are primarily domestic tourists, mostly from the states of  Nuevo León, Jalisco, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Tabasco and the Distrito Federal (Mexico City).  Hotel occupancy has reached nearly 80 percent and businesses offering tours and sightseeing are operating at 90 percent capacity. The merchants are predicting that this level of activity will continue for the remainder of the summer season.

Turtle hatchling releases by the public on Media Luna Beach & Guadalupana To Be Announced

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases usually start around the end of July or early August & are held periodically until early October.
Lately there have been many manta rays, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and lotsa fish while snorkeling. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately.

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July-August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
