As part of World Environmental Day, the City and the CAPA (Committee on Water & Sewage in Quintana Roo) signed a water conservation agreement   “Espacio de Cultura del Agua” to promote water conservation among the community.  They specifically intend to open an outlet in the municipality named "Espacio de Cultura del Agua", where they will conduct workshops giving training on water conservation, sustainable use, and preservation of water resources. The agreement involves lease of property and 150,000 pesos for equipment, learning materials, and furniture. It will serve the 16,315 residents of the island and municipality (that statistic is from the 2010 census, I believe) with information and education using training videos, discussions, lectures, group activities, guided tours, reading circles, contests, etc.

Reduction in permits was a request by the licensees. But this year the same number of permit (243) were given. Over half belong to seamen from Isla Mujeres, while about 30 percent go to Holbox seamen, and about 15-20 percent go to Cancun. The official from SEMARNAT, Raul Gonzalez Castilla, said there is increased vigilance and anyone committing irregularities could be taken out of operation for three months and could be punished with a fine up to 10,000 dollars.

The facility for the mobile vendors who were removed from the beaches and malecon is located next to the municipal market, downtown. It has been completed with the installation of a roof, and area of two square meters of space.  It was finished yesterday morning and it has been painted and the roofing is completed, with partitions between the spaces. It is not known when or how these spaces will be made available to the mobile vendors. Previously this area was used for the 'jardineras' (planters I think) of the 'centro de abasto' (supply center, I think).

Vulnerability to hurricanes
Desprotegidos ante huracanes[+] Ver mas
A stretch of seawall of about 100 meters was affected by Wilma in 2005, revealing that the work was of poor quality with a lack of bars or grids anchoring it. It is noted that this  seawall is about a kilometer long. The section in question is near the northern end of the airstrip, to the area of the Poder Judicial building. The Center for Climate Prediction of NOAA are forecasting eight to 13 storms in the Atlantic, of which three to six could become hurricanes, and at least one could intensify to reach category four or five.
