Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are nesting on the eastern beaches in the wee hours. There are Tortugranja personnelmonitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are blue and red crabs migrate to & from the sea during the full moons, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle & in Sac Bajo

Fun times in the "hood" @ 12:34 a.m. in front of the neighbors house, MaraVilla Caribe This worker from the turtle farm is scooping out the rocks under the mama turtle trying to help her find a good spot to lay her eggs. I had insomnia so went out to investigate. Then I woke Lawrie and two friends, Andy and Yumiko, who are staying at R and Bruce's casa. Too funny that we were standing around on the beach in the middle of the night watching a turtle dig a hole. Love this place!

The dolphin that recovered at the Tortugranja after it was rescued in Cancun about a month ago is expected to be released on Tuesday or Wednesday in front of the media, to avoid any doubts. The dolphin has been popular with islanders and tourists with about 200 people visiting the Tortugranja daily, of which about 50 were residents and the rest were tourists. The dolphin appears unaware of the visitors but spins repeatedly and goes from side to side because obviously she is accustomed to her freedom in the immense sea and that space is too small where she is confined. The Tortugranja is open from 9am to 5pm. She is now eating 8-10 kilos of capelín, ( a sardine like fish) in addition to squid. She will be set free in the area of the whale shark sighting where there is plenty of food, so she can reaccustom herself.
