E.City workers received a notice on August 12 of cancellation of special compensations. The payroll cut is part of the solution to the financial crisis on the eve of the changeover of government. This will apply to the first half of August. One alderman expressed regret that this measure will affect the workers who barely make the national minimum wage. (~$5/day)

Initiate activities for the festival celebrating the foundation of Isla Mujeres

Inician actividades por el festejo de la fundación de Isla Mujeres

T  This event was initiated seventeen years ago, to celebrate the founding of the town 163 years ago. According to the town historian, Fidel Villanueva Madrid,  the settlers were refugees from the war in 1847, who had left their assets behind in the Yucatan. They realized the war would be long and decided to become islanders. On this date (August 17) we recognize this community that had to battle a hostile environment, with hurricanes, while they did not have any sort of equipment or anything like that. It was only them and the sea, and from nothing has risen this modern town. They had been engaged in agriculture, and adapted to the island by becoming fishermen, and they continued to adapt.
The historian commented that the festivities should be celebrated from August 17 to August 21st because that is the date Yucatan Congress approved the decree. Islanders are invited to wear their best clothes and to receive all visitors with open arms for this festival.

Youthful offenders: Victims of society

"To achieve the goal of comprehensive care for juvenile offenders and ensure their reintegration into society, you must observe, disseminate and promote respect for human rights in the system of management and administration of juvenile justice, serving the principles of legality and social integration, " said  Roger Barbosa Veza, the Human Rights agency representative in Isla Mujeres.

PROFECO needs to visit the paper supply stores

Por Esto says the cost of school supplies in Isla Mujeres would be lower if the PROFECO agency monitored the sales, but there is only a branch office that has  administrative purposes, and lacks any authority to punish or close a business. Although many businesses have increased prices for books and supplies, there are some who are offering discounts and promotions to help parents while the students go back to school.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are nesting on the eastern beaches in the wee hours. There are Tortugranja staff  monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle. The main migration of the blue crabs is during the  full moons of Sept-Oct, but there are always some early ones... watch out for them in Sac Bajo.
There are usually some "crab rescue" events on these nights, to help them get across the roads safely. The red ones move between scrub and the sea and the blue ones move between the mangrove type areas and the sea. They are spawning.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

On the internet in the past 24 hours...

Predicting a Rainy Day....or two... The storm is becoming disorganized as it passes over us, so if it is going to become a hurricane, it would most likely do it in the Gulf.
The Mayor was on FB last night commenting about the rains predicted for the early hours today, giving advice about precautions, moving building materials from sidewalks, not leaving trash out to clog the drains, etc.

Written by August 14, 2013 in New Posts, Tropical Weather
Early on Monday the team brought into question an area of closely watched convection over the Southern Caribbean.  We mentioned the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season’s slow start thus far but turned attention to a more favorable pattern including a very interesting storm potential this late week and weekend.  Currently the same area is now beginning to better organize itself and could become a tropical system as early as Wednesday night or Thursday.  As of Wednesday evening the area has been observed to have a center of circulation, good enough to be now classified as Invest 92L; a more pronounced name for this low end tropical disturbance.

Invest 92 L Infrared Satellite

1082879_10201771662719075_923706675_n
Invest 92L is beginning to show signs of organization as you can see in the infrared image above.  It now has developed a main center of circulation, with convection wrapping around it.  As it moves into warmer waters and areas of lower wind shear it will begin to have a more distinct counter clockwise rotation and begin to show signs of an even more distinct center.  Thunderstorms packing heavy rains and strong winds are moving towards the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize and will be the main impact for now.

Increased Area Development In The Future

Image 2- Development On Arise
Image 2- Development On Arise
During the next 48 hours expect to see Invest 92L to organize itself into a tropical system.  All the ingredients are right for it to develop, and as it progresses towards the west northwest and into Gulf of Mexico it is system that the Gulf Coast states should begin to monitor.  The Yucatan Peninsula and Central America will see heavy rains and gusty winds over the next few days whether it develops into a tropical system or not.

Forecast Model Error & Real-Time Steering Winds | Where Does This System Go?

1079583_10201771662359066_185906376_n
Currently the models are trending to have Invest 92L cross over the Yucatan Peninsula and move into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.  Once it is out in open water, the trend is for it to take a turn to the NNE and track towards Gulf Coast

It says....The disturbance located in the extreme northwestern Caribbean Sea has become less organized over the past hours and the chances of becoming a tropical cyclone have declined to 50 percent. The development of this system before moving over the Yucatan Peninsula is unlikely. However, it is expected that this development can happen when it is over the Gulf of Mexico.Continued rainfall for the entire region this evening. The heaviest rains will be  in Quintana Roo and Yucatan eastern municipalities.

Kathy Ennis   We enjoyed "easy listening" jazz and blues with the Sol Rockers last evening at Bally Hoo. John Cain, the conversion is working. I know you saw me tapping my foot! The food was really good too. Pasta Primavera. Probably the best on Isla

We were there, too.  Bruce enjoyed his chicken tacos & the Sol Rockers were very good & the rain didn't dampen any spirits...it just caused a few of us to relocate from the edge of the palapa. A nice evening!

Isla Animals  Daily Update: So Eileen and Arturo had a little clinic in Eileen’s kitchen, ha ha – doesn’t everybody. How funny is that? Any way Arturo tended to some wounds, and spayed and neutered some pups and Gerdy’s mom. Thanks so much Arturo and Eileen and Doug and of course Barlito, the world’s youngest vet tech. I’m flying to Cancun on Saturday. I’m so excited to see all my babies, do some “blue streak doggie adventures,” with Eileen and then bring back two puppies. I also have someone taking one to Toronto on Monday, probably that little pup on the table. It comes to $100.00 a puppy so if anyone would like to help with that it would be incredible. One puppy and one dog at a time, that’s the way we do it and it is so worth it when you see these babies happy in their new homes.
