The population between the ages of six and 22 are at higher risk for this disease. In week 33, there have only been 11 cases in the township, with a decrease here, however in Cancun the number of cases tripled. (Usually most of the cases in Isla Mujeres occur on the mainland part of the township.)

Por Carlos GascA-QUEQUI The Discovery channel is spending three days filming for the documentary series "Future Planet" about renewable technologies, focusing on the project of Antonio Naciff Solís aboard his solar school boat (barco escuela solar). He says the boat is constructed with purely recyclable materials, noting that the technique is not new, but was improved with the help of other professionals. He notes these techniques were adopted from those used for the small houseboat anchored in the lagoon, and credits its owner Richart Sowa with initiating his project.Naciff Solís said his project is sponsored by a soft drink company. He was with the film crew at North Beach demonstrating the solar energy system, and a system of propulsion that involves wind turbines, which is new for this type.

Increased efforts against dengue in Isla Mujeres

 Complaints about cabbies

SIPSE reports that taxi drivers have a negative impact on tourism when they overcharge for their services. At noon a rented golf cart hit a taxi. Witnesses said the taxi stopped unexpectedly. The tourists agreed to pay the cabbie $45 for the damage that was caused. Witnesses blamed the taxi driver and shouted indignantly at him, and thought the municipal police should have intervened..

Youths invited to sign up for their military service document
Acuden 50 jóvenes isleños para tramitar pre cartilla militar. (Lanrry Parra/SIPSE)
There was a leafleting campaign at the high school, Colegio Bachilleres and 50 young islanders applied for their pre Cartilla. The official identification is required for many jobs, and a release by the Navy is granted to those who perform military service. The documents will be processed in September & October for  those born in 1995. The municipal Board of Recruitment is next to the Civil Registry and open 9a to 4p, and their identifications & proof of residency must be accompanied by four black and white photos with a white shirt, short hair, and no beard or mustache.
Here is an explanation I wrote a couple years ago... ...I did some research about conscription (mandatory service) and the Mexican Military, which is made up entirely of professional career soldiers. Draftees are not integrated into any military units. Legally, every Mexican man is obligated to one year of national military service (SMN), when they participate in weekend sessions that are social service in nature, emphasizing education, history, physical fitness, and military discipline. Upon completion, they are given a "Cartilla", which is often requested when seeking employment.

A public lottery will be held at the City Council Chambers where the youths will present themselves in alphabetical order to draw from an urn of balls colored blue, black and white a black ball means you get a "pass" for the year, but are "available". The blue ball represents the Navy and the white one is associated with the Army and Air forces. But either way, the young men who get white or blue balls will attend Saturday training sessions between February and December. They can also comply with civil service by involvement in literacy programs and sports training programs.

The mammal has had a good recovery and is swimming well, and no official information has been given about her release. It is an adult female who was found alone off the coast of Cancun, tho it is noted they usually travel in groups. At first it was thought the dolphin had injured a fin on the reef, but there was no evidence of injury. PROFEPA staff have not announced what will happen to the dolphin being held in captivity at the Tortugranja Turtle Farm.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July-August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
Please slow your speed and try not to smash us. This week they are crossing b/c of the full moon.

On the internet in the past 24 hours...

Kathy Ennis  Bally Hoo turned out the be a great evening. The Sol Rockers played to a VERY appreciative audience, the breeze was refreshing, the food (my fish sandwich was outstanding and Keith's steak tacos were very tender) was great. All in all a fun evening.
Me:  Bruce's 'catch of the day' grouper grilled was excellent also..and we enjoyed the music a lot of course & the attentive, friendly staff. Very nice evening.

I know it looks like he's painting dots on whale sharks, but really he's tagging them. Here's an NPR article about how he's trying to figure out where they go when they leave Isla Mujeres.  LINK. In nine years, Robert Hueter has tagged over 800 and published his results so far in the journal PLOS One. HERE is a link to that article.
