Coronation Of Navy Day Queen
Source: Diario Q Roo/Manuel Valdez
Shaunny Valeria Figueroa Quijano  was crowned the queen of Marina Nacional Isla Mujeres 2013. In addition to being a popular young woman, she is a descendent of fishing families in Isla Mujeres. She was crowned last evening, prior to the dance on the Town Square. The schedule for Navy Day related activities is given below, and in this article.

Keeping Whale Shark Tourists Safe
The Director of Civil Protection, Gabriel Sulu, recommended that the boats with licenses to do whale shark tours follow the recommendations  issued by the Harbor Master, to avoid accidents and sanctions. He said the responsibility regarding accidents caused by recklessness lies with the Harbor Master, and not his agency.  He referred to boats who left the port when there was poor weather on Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as on May 15th, when the season began. The article mentions two minor incidents this week, that were heard about unofficially, without any details. He said it is the responsibility of the Port Authorities in Isla Mujeres and in Puerto Juarez to prevent these occurrences. The Municipal Tourism agency of Isla Mujeres noted the whale shark season is off to a successful start, having begun two weeks ago. It will end September 15th. Second Annual Celebration At Sacred Heart
Source: Quequi/Carlos Gasca   Hundreds of Catholics have attended the "Fiesta Patronal" of the Sacred Heart Church of Isla Mujeres (Sagrado Corazón de Jesús) which began officially on May 29 and will conclude on June 9th. The fiestas yesterday coincided with the festival of Corpus Christi yesterday, and there was a procession with the image, which this year is in the form of a heart, as a crown of gold, which was donated by the islanders. This is the second year for this festival, which includes a variety of religious events and activities for children and families. These include a Mass on June 1, followed by a magic show and clowns at the facilities opposite the church. On June 2 after catechism and mass at 7pm, there will be a coronation of the queen, with celebrity host Chucho Robles, as well as the  band "Vaquera". When the celebrations conclude on June 9, families can enjoy mechanical games, dances, comedians, and a show for the whole family.
This is the equivalent to the downtown Church's celebration of it Patroness, The Virgin of Immaculate Conception, which occurs in late November-early December. Her icon was brought here over 100 years ago from the first Catholic Church in the area, Boca Iglesias, which is said to be the first house of worship built in America.

Golf Cart Race On Runway
The Golf Cart Race will begin at 5pm on the runway, with a racing distance of 200 meters, and the winners will be give vouchers for gasoline worth 500 or 1000 pesos. This is part of the Navy Day activities, with departure for the memorial wreath event taking place Saturday morning at the concrete pier beside the ferry at 10am. Jackie Conlon:

NEW RESTAURANT!

Jackie Conlon at Love Around Waffles

Jackie Conlon:  Love Around Waffles - Inside it had Manchengo cheese and ham. $50 peso and so big I could not eat it all.

  • Jennifer-  Is the batter savory?

Jackie Conlon- I saw Lalo putting some seasoning in the batter but it was nothing that took away the flavor of the Manchengo and ham. Basically you pick the ingredients that you want in and on the waffle. If you want more seasoning in the batter i am sure they will accommodate you. They are starting out slow and expect that during high season they will expand their menu somewhat.

Jennifer - Thanks Jackie I was just wondering if the batter was sweet, as I'm not a fan of mixing the two. Looks delish!

Jackie Conlon- No I didn't think the batter was sweet at all.

Small Boats Restricted To Port

Source: Quintanarroense/ Ovidio López    Early Wednesday, the Harbor Master restricted all vessels under 40 feet to port, because of the strong southerly winds, while the ferries continued to run normally. Just before noon the island experienced rainfall, with the wind increasing to 35 kph with gusts up to 45kph. Tourism activity on the island was lessened, and improvement is not expected on Thursday for the fishermen and nautical tour operators.

Whale Shark Festival June 21-24
Source: Diario Q Roo/Manuel Valdez      The Whale Shark Festival will take place June 21-24, which will not only promote the care and conservation of the species, there will also be activities like art competition, sand sculptures, parades, and other activities for the enjoyment of visitors and the general public. There are more than 200 licensees who employ over 600 people. The season began May 15 and ends on September 15, and after July, over 200 whale sharks can be observed in the water.  To attract the attention of visitors, permit holders offer packages for these tours, which are done with quality control and care for the natural environment, under the supervision of the Isla Contoy Sea Park/ Parque Marino de Isla Contoy.

Committee against hurricanes initiated

Source: Diario Q Roo/Manuel Valdez    Prior to the official installation of the Municipal Anti Hurricane Committee which is scheduled of June 4, committee members met to discuss actions that should be implemented in case of a threat and the prompt responses that should be made to safeguard the population, the visitors, and the property of the islanders. The team members discussed the work that each of them would be responsible for, and moved forward toward having a final plan to use in case of a contingency. Each agency revealed its needs to promptly be prepared for any type of weather related contingency, including actions to be taken before, during, and after.

Monitoring For Sand Removal

Councilman Henry Tejero Bacab, who chairs the municipal Public Safety Committee requested more vigilance on the mainland of Isla Mujeres, specifically in the area of Isla Blanca, to monitor if sand is being extracted and trucked out during the night and early morning.  The councilman said that after hearing the complaints of several businessmen on the mainland of Isla Mujeres,  he decided to write request to the Mayor to implement an operation at night to detect sand removal, which is presumably destined for other resorts in Cancun. He said among the complainants is the president of the Homeowners Association of Isla Blanca, Carlos Castell, who was complaining publicly about  this activity a week ago. He explained that the removal of this sand is against the law and this comes under the authority of PROFEPA who should intervene and punish those responsible.  He said there is concern about destruction of the dunes which serve as a natural barrier in hurricane season.  He said the sand is being taken at night, and removed by dump trucks, who stop by dawn. The mining is taking place near "Pirata Morgan" in the continental zone. He said for this type of activity, permits are needed from SEMARNAT, Ecología Municipal, and from the Ministry of the Environment (Secretaria del Medio Ambiente), among others who oversee the conservation of the beaches of the continental area of Isla Mujeres, which are a natural resource for this tourist destination. Diane White Daniel  Last night's dinner ~ Pescado al mojo de ajo ($11.73 US)... served in a colorful little shack hanging out over the canal, with some of the most amazing mojitos ever... Great meal, great company :) — with David Daniel and 3 others at El Varadero.
The excellent mojitos were 65p/5.40. The restaurant was closing as we left, and John went searching for the chef to be sure he knew that that was one of the BEST fish he had ever tasted.

Then we took a ride around the south part of the island and stopped to enjoy the lights of Cancun and the stars. Returning up the east coastal road, there were a LOT of red crabs out migrating. When we returned home a guest said there were quite a number of blue crabs out over by Sac Bajo. This is early for them, since they usually migrate in the fall.

Gail Marie Stewartposted toIsla Mujeres Community Information Board  Two of the nicest newlyweds on Isla, Lalo and Sidney, just opened a "Waffle Shop", (whose name escapes me!) on Madero, almost across the street from Osorio's hardware, on the block between Juarez and Rueda Medina. Just a little place, open 8-1 and 6-10 PM, yum, yum WAFFLES, sweet, savory, and everything in between. I had a Queso and Jamon waffle...yup, Philadelphia and Ham, mixed in to the batter, oh, it was so good! These are local kids, just starting out, so stop by for breakfast or dessert at night, they are my vicinos and friends...and I am sure you all know the smiling, shoeless, Lalo, he wears shoes now!
Last night when we went on a golf cart ride around the isle ~9p..There were tables outside Chedraui selling shoes and other items, aerosalsa classes(Zumba) at Mundaca, a million stars at Punta Sur, beautiful lights of Cancun, and a LOT of red crabs migrating across the east side Caribbean road.

Renee TO  posted toSisters of Perpetual Disorder - Isla Mujeres Chapter For higher maintenance sisters ;) There's a guy set up at a table in the Chedraui parking lot with the tents there. He's got some pretty cool makeup and powders and they are all very happy to show you how it works. I went to buy groceries and stopped for a look. Lots of women and a few men were milling around getting their eyebrows done, this seemed very popular! The end results looked great, so I got mine done. If you like dark, sleek, perfectly styled latina eyebrows (plancheros), go see this guy! It takes about 15-20 minutes as they put some 'goo' and plastic on your brows before they start trimming and styling. The eyeshadows/powders were $50 pesos each and $70 pesos for the eyebrows. Have fun
