Teens Travel To Tijuana: National Olympiad Basketball
After being champions on Thursday afternoon, the Under 16 Basketball team of Isla Mujeres traveled to Tijuana, Baja California, to represent the state in the National Olympiad. They will play the state of Chihuahua on Sunday at noon, and on Monday morning they will play Veracruz, and in the evening they take on the state of Baja California. The following day they play the state of Jalisco. Source: Diario Q Roo/Manuel Valdez

Resident Annoyed After Denied Discount
Mauricio Rodríguez Díaz complained that he was denied a discount on the car ferry because the plates on his car were expired. He says he has lived on the isle for twenty years, and never encountered this before. He insists he is the victim of arrogance of the employees. He was returning from Merida, and despite presenting his credential for the ferry discount, he was required to pay 256 pesos rather than 205 pesos, because his car had expired license plates.  First Aid & Rescue Training For Officers
Twenty police officers were on the Posada Beach yesterday receiving first aid training from Cancun fire fighter instructor Rubén Mata Armas, with assistance from the Red Cross paramedics of Isla Mujeres. The officers were divided into two groups for their training, and looked happy to be receiving this instruction. The activity attracted the attention of several onlookers who thought an accident had occurred, but when they realized what was happening, they said they approved of this training of the Island's police officers. Cleaning Drains
Business owners and residents downtown have said that the drains downtown which have broken covers are a hazard to pedestrians and drivers. Therefore they have had to open some of them and clear out the rubbish, and then put cement on top to close them. Some do this without the consent of authorities. On Friday, several tenants were observed unclogging and cleaning drains, and removing rubbish such as cigarette butts, bags, and "taparoscas". Source: Por Esto

Empty Beaches
Por Esto reported that despite the high temperatures and sunshine, on Friday North Beach (Playa Norte) had only about 50 people. This is normally the busiest beach in Isla Mujeres, but it looked too quiet, and nearly empty. On the Avalon beach there were only about 20 people. Merchants, restauranteurs, and other tourism service providers hope business improves by Sunday, and expect occupancy to improve then. Source: Por Esto

Working Weekends & Temporary Closures
Given the low occupancy in Isla Mujeres, souvenir shops have begun closing their doors for a few days to economize, after recent poor sales and because off season has begun. According to a representative of CONACO (National Chamber of Commerce) the slow sales for the merchants are a result of the mobile vendors. Mobile vendors "have been impacted at 20%". The CONACO representative noted that most closures are just for a few days and there are businesses who prefer to open only on the weekends. It is estimated that this month there are more than 12 jewelry and souvenir shops that have closed temporarily. Source: Por Esto

  1. Thank you for helping spread the awareness of Zapatos Para los Ninos for Greg and Natalie. They always thank me for helping and I always thank them for giving me the honor to participate in bringing smiles to the children’s faces.
