That Tropical Wave is expected to become a Tropical Depression in the next couple days as it moves westward at 15-20mph, with a 70% chance of development in the next 2 days and 80% in the next five days. Interests in Jamaica, Hoduras, Belize, Guatemala & the Yucatan Peninsula are advised to monitor its progress.
CONAGUA's forecast indicates the storm is likely to arrive on Wednesday & that rain is expected on Thursday for our coastal area.
Down by the coast of Africa, the NHC says one Tropical Wave could have possible development through the end of the week as it moves slowly westward over the far eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean, with a 30% chance of formation in the next five days. The other Tropical Wave, over the eastern Atlantic Ocean SE of the Cabo Verde Islands, is not expected to develop further, with only a 10% chance of formation through the next five days.

On the NATIONAL epidemiological risk light for August 31-Sept. 13, the majority of Mexico is in the Orange (High Risk) status, and we are included among these 21 states. There are 10 states in the Yellow (Medium Risk) status, and only one in Red (Maximum Risk). This is an improvement from the previous light when there was only one state in Yellow, 25 were in Orange and 6 were in Red.
Friday was the six month anniversary since the first cases of C-19 were detected in Mexico. The national light is now issued twice monthly, and starting with this one, 10 indicators are taken into consideration, while previously there were four.
A REMINDER--It is the STATE epidemiological light, which is updated WEEKLY, that determines when our municipal government opens our beaches, and when businesses may operate at larger capacities. That announcement is made by our Governor on Thursday nights for the following Monday-Sunday.

On the state epidemiological light for Aug. 31 thru Sept. 6, both regions of Quintana Roo remain in the Orange status.

Turtles continue nesting in August. They can be observed mating offshore from Punta Sur during this month, and they nest along the eastern beaches. Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in the sand in a pen outside the facility. Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres, Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills, and very rarely, a Leatherback will attempt to nest, but generally the sand isn't sufficiently deep.

Swimming with the whale sharks takes place in August, which ends annually in mid-September. They congregate and feed on a 'buffet' of plankton and fish eggs from a type of tuna. Rays are also attracted to the feeding areas.  Photo by Tony Garcia

>>Meteors!! The Perseids are currently active & one of the most popular showers. They will peak in the early mornings of the weekend of August 11,12 & 13, but the moon will be at or slightly past its last quarter phase and interfering. However, the Perseids are bright & you may see 3 or 4 dozen when they are peaking, if you're patient. They continue thru the 24th. The Alpha Capricornids are going on now (thru Aug. 15) with only a few meteors per hour, but they are known for producing bright fireballs when active. (They peaked Tuesday & moonlight will interfere with visibility.)

That Tropical Wave is now showing signs of organization & has a 50% chance of formation in the next two days and 60% chance within five days. A broad low pressure system has formed in association with it, and a Tropical Depression could form in the next couple days as it moves westward at 15mph. NHC advises that Jamaica, Honduras, Belize, Guatemala & the Yucatan peninsula monitor its progress.
Today the municipality of Isla Mujeres reports four more cases for a total of 155, with 10 deaths and 85 recovered.
The state geoportal for 8/29 (still) reports 22 active cases by colonia as: La Gloria-11, Ampl. la Gloria-3, Meteorologico-2, Downtown-1, Salina Chica-1, Salina Grande-1, Caridad del Cobre-1, Canotal-1, Colonia #6-1, and none on the mainland.
On the national map of 8/29, the municipality reports 6 suspicious and 67 negatives (with 151 confirmed and 10 deaths).

There is an article about trash collection that reminds the residents to "stay tuned" for new temporary schedules, and if there is a C-19 patient in the household to spray the trash bags with water & bleach, and advise the collectors. It is noted that the current temporary schedule is published at the City sites. (Photos of trash collection on the mainland).

As part of the commemoration of the 170th anniversary of the founding of the town, an online discussion was presented titled "The importance of Isla Mujeres in the musical identity of Quintana Roo". Participants included the composers-lyricists of the Isla Mujeres anthem,  Ramón Iván Suarez Caamal and Marcos Ramírez Canu. It was moderated by Isla Mujeres historian Fidel Villanueva Madrid, with other officials.

On Trip Advisor's Traveler's Choice Awards, North Beach is #1 in Mexico and #17 internationally in the Best Beaches category. (It is currently closed until the state epidemiological traffic light changes from Orange to Yellow or Green, for the Northern Zone of Q Roo.)  It is noted that North Beach has up to 100 meters of beach between the level of the tide and the beginning of the dune vegetation and that it was the first point touched by Spanish conquerors in the year of 1517, of what is now Mexico.
As its name indicates, it is located in the northern sector of this Pueblo Magico, with gentle turquoise waters that give the feeling of being in a huge blue pool, North Beach has spectacular sunsets, known for their beauty and splendor.
This is how travelers around the world have written about it on the world's largest platform, Tripadvisor, ′′ Amazing place, unique in its kind, magical Mexico, sand like talc, the warm sea, unique colors, family atmosphere, looks like natural pool , amazing, highly recommended for singles and family ", to quote the first comment on the website.

Due to the Covid-19, the 8th edition of the Lion Fish Culinary Contest will be done via videos, with the participating restaurants and independent chefs providing demonstrations of various methods of preparation. Nivardo Fernández Martínez, municipal Director of Urban Development and the Environment, said it is very important to continue this type of activity because the presence of this fish has caused an ecological imbalance in the marine environment and can damage other species as well as the reefs, therefore each year actions are taken to remove it from the waters and protect the ecosystems by promoting various dishes in local restaurants. The event promotes the fishing and consumption of lionfish, and supports the reactivation of the economy. He noted that lionfish can be prepared in various forms such as grilled, ceviche, in tacos, on skewers, or fried, noting it has exquisite white meat that works in a variety of dishes. (One of the winners a couple years ago was a cake made with lionfish...not a fish-cake...a dessert-cake. (!) )
