The end of the lobster season is nearly a month away, and the fishermen are hoping things improve in February, because they have not been able to work due to the weather in the past month, except for a few days. The director of the cooperative "Justicia Social" said things will not be favorable for them if the production of lobster does not improve. It is not only hard for individuals, it is hard for the cooperatives, who must pay about 20,000 pesos monthly for  Seguro Social insurance for all their members. Fishermen are having a hard time covering their expenses and loans made by the cooperative.

There has not been a single case of H1N1 influenza on the island, and there were no cases during the national contingency that occurred in 2009.  Roman Maldonado, head of the CROC union, said they will be offering vaccines against influenza at the Senior Citizens in colonia La Gloria on Saturday from 10am to 2pm with plans to administer ~200 vaccines. They have enough to meet the general demand, and they have help from the personnel of the IMSS (Mexican Institute of Social Security).
The event will be open to the public to address this issue, but they also offer a range of medical services including rapid HIV tests, eye exams, energy massages, psychological consults, orthopedic consults, and other services. As of last week, nearly 600 people had been vaccinated, especially children, the elderly, and pregnant women. Also there have been pharmacy chain stores that have administered this medication.

(See schedule of events below.)
The next weekend is Valentine's Day & the Lion Fish Tournament. On the 15th the Carnaval King & Queen will be presented & Carnaval begins as the month ends. Read more here at the Isla Mujeres Magazine February Events Page!

The tentative, partial Carnaval schedule...

On Sunday, March 2,  they will hold the traditional Carnaval Playero at the Posada del Mar Beach. (Along Main Street/Rueda Medina. Playero means of the beach.).

On Monday March 3 will be the traditional regional evening with Yucatecan outfits, and the dance of the pig's head & the bull petate  (el baile de la cabeza de cochino y el toro petate), among other activities. In addition, with the regional night on Monday, will be held a celebration of the discovery of Isla Mujeres, which occurred on the 3rd of March.

On Tuesday March 4th the competitions between the troupes will take place, as well as the traditional reading of the will of Juan Carnaval, and then the burning event.

This week....

Feb 1 Competition for Adult King & Queen of Carnaval

Feb 2  Candlemas / Fiesta de la Candelaria Join your friend for a tamale party! On King's Day (January 6th), those who got the baby Jesus in their piece of Rosca/ King's cake, are hosting the party today.
The second of February occurs forty days after Christmas, and is celebrated by Catholics as the "Feast of Purification" or as the "Presentation of Christ at the Temple." According to Jewish law it was customary to bring a baby to the temple after that period of time had passed.  Jesus would have been taken to the temple on February second, if he was born on Dec. 25th.
The second day of February corresponds to the first day of the first month on the Aztec calendar, called Atlcahualo o Quauitleoa. There is an ancient tradition in many parts of Mexico to take corn cobs to the church to be blessed on this day, in anticipation of the onset of  planting season.
Atole is also traditional for this party, which like tamales, is a corn based food.Chocolate is usually included on both celebrations, King's Day and Candlemas, and like corn, is also an important substance in indigenous traditions.
In many Catholic churches (and homes) in Mexico, on February second the baby Jesus icon is taken from the Nativity scene, dressed in finery, and moved to a niche, where it remains for the rest of the year before being 'lifted' to its niche.
The baby was placed in the Nativity during the first of the Posadas, on December 16th, and remained there until Candlemas. During the Posadas there is a children's Posada play on the town square and neighborhood reenactments of Mary & Joseph being denied shelter, with a  party at the house that admits them. On King's Day, January 6th, the figurine (and Mexican children) was given presents, "from the 3 Magi/ wise men".  The pieces of King's cake that are shared by families, parishes, and coworkers are also said to represent gifts from the Magi, with their three colors  representing the three Kings, and there are three baby figurines inside.
The tamales vary by region. In Isla Mujeres they may be accompanied by with sophisticated guajillo chile sauce with achiote , tomato , garlic , onion and spices, while in addition to masa and pork, the filling may include olives, capers , raisins and almonds. If it is prepared by people from Chiapas, they may have added carrot, potato, peas, peppers and boiled egg.

Feb. 2 is the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox, and some believe it can indicate  upcoming weather.

Feb 2 is  Dia de Marmota, or Groundhog's Day in the US

ISLA MUJERES, 29 de enero.- .
Wednesday afternoon, the birthday XCVII (97th) of the late musician and composer Virgil "El Chino" Fernandez was commemorated , for his contributions to the cultural heritage of Isla Mujeres. He was born on the island and is known for songs such as Mujercita Linda, El Reloj, Isla Mujeres Bella and Mujer Isleña. These songs are much appreciated by Island musicians and audiences alike, and with the rescuing and acknowledgement of this cultural legacy, new generations will learn the lyrics  about the bohemia that characterized Isla Mujeres for many years. As part of this event, the president of the DIF, Marthy Vargas Magana gave a guitar to the Director of Culture for use in their musical education workshops. The musician's son,  Virgilio Fernández Magaña, represented his  family, and said they appreciated the tribute.

The second and third grade students at Cesar Mendoza Santana primary school received environmental education as part of the work of the current municipal administration of Agapito Magana Sanchez, with the theme of water conservation and the importance of taking care of this resource. They colored drawings and stickers, and were shown a video, to raise their awareness about this important issue.
It was announced the the water company Aguakan will assist with this educational work by providing educational materials, and tours of the sewage water treatment plant at the southern part of the island. The program will continue all week, and then move to the elementary school Andres Quintana Roo.

Derriban postes de Telmex

A worker was hired to cut a coconut tree by the wife of the leader of the taxi union. The tree unexpectedly fell onto the Telmex telephone line, damaging two poles, and affecting telephone service to dozens of families in La Gloria. One of the poles was completely broken and separated from its base and was only held up by the cables, while the other remained upright, but is too damaged to continue to be used.  Officers with the Municipal Preventive Police (PMP) and personal from Telefonos de Mexico arrived to the accident site, and apparently the wife of the union leader was held responsible for the damage.
Customers whose service was affected were complaining of social networks such as Facebook. One of the company's employees said the restoration of the telephone service and replacement of the poles requires specialized personnel, who are expected to arrive in upcoming days to do this work., and at the latest it will be done next week.

At the end of the briefing there were more doubts and more questions than answers.
Some union members presented questions about other businesses they own, and this meeting was scheduled exclusively for taxi drivers who are required to file tax returns. The union leader, Eduardo Penich Rodriguez said they may conduct another sessin and will ensure that it only concerns issues affecting taxi workers.

    Por Carlos Gasca.-
Fisherman Niger Rosado Moreno, 43, of the cooperative Makax in Isla Mujeres, suffered symptoms of decompression while diving ~12 nautical miles from the island. The fisherman made more than two dives, but apparently did not respect the dive tables and subsequently suffered a serious decompression that caused pain in his joints, as well as nausea. He was given urgent treatment in the hyperbaric chamber, after he was taken to the unit shortly after 3:30pm, and minutes later he was assessed by the attending physician of the chamber.
According to the fisherman himself, this was the first time he had experienced the problem of decompression, but after several sessions in the chamber, he improved and was discharged. It is noted that the hyperbaric chamber was returned to operation a couple months ago when the mayor promised the fishing community that he would  revive this service.

Gilberto Fernández y Ramírez is the president of a civil association formed  to promote their plan of bringing small cruise vessels to Isla Mujeres. Its name is “El Cielo, la luna y el mar” and the president says they have received a good response from the three levels of government, which include the Mayor, the Governor, and the President, and he showed a document generated by their representatives.
The association proposes that the arrival of cruise ships and their purchasing power would improve the economy of the island, and would affect development in the Continental Zone with new jobs. The ships would require boats to transfer passengers to the Bay and the Island, and to anchor offshore. There is no date given for the possible arrival of cruise ships, which have not arrived since 1997 when there was an unexpected accident by the cruise ship Leeward on the coral of the Manchones reef, after which their arrivals were cancelled.
