ISLA MUJERES, 18 de agosto.-  The Mayor made a speech about the importance of honoring parents & grandparents & the past, about being a part of the island now, and that in the future we will be a part of its history. The Governor sent a representative, who made a speech. Then the original decree of August 17, 1850 was read where the Governor of Merida, Yucatan established the "warnings and rules" for the local community to live in harmony, keeping statistics, and become known as the pueblo of Dolores. From these early statistical surveys, the founding families are known, and awards were given to their descendants. The Mayor thanked the islanders for the opportunity to serve them for the past 28 months, spoke about improvements that were made during that time, and talked about the future of the continental area of Isla Mujeres. Other special guests were present and a cultural festival followed that featured traditional and folkloric dancing. The Founding Grandmother was crowned, Delia Graniel.

Bad weather affected lobster catch

The recent weather stirred up the ocean bottom, and the ocean was "Revuelto", which makes it hard to catch lobsters, due to low visibility. Weather is an important factor for the fishermen & affects their catches. They were disappointed that demand was not higher during the summer holidays.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July-August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

This says Due to the excessive amount of rain we are crossing the streets.  Please slow your speed and try not to smash us. This week they are crossing b/c of the full moon.

Daily Update: I just got here yesterday afternoon and yesterday morning someone dropped off three puppies in box outside our front gate. I was thrilled; I spent the afternoon picking ticks with Tiffany and Marcelino. This morning they got a bath, clean ears, dewormer and a start on Doxycycline. And they look beautiful. The beige one is a male and the other two are females and then the little cutie to my right is a little female that has a bit of an infection on her tummy from being spayed. All these pups are from the Guatalupana. In fact I’m heading out there this afternoon to check on the puppies at the blind ladies house. I’ll let you know how it goes. We are also planning a spay and neuter clinic soon, it all happens so fast, these new pups are six months old before you know it and then they can start having pups of their own. Incredible!
