Ante el paso de la onda tropical
Manuel VALDEZ
ISLA MUJERES, 15 de agosto.-Citizens are advised to take the usual precautions when rains occur, and city employees have been working to keep the drains clear to prevent flooding. Tropical wave 13 has a fifty percent chance of becoming a tropical system. (It was becoming disorganized with landfall & reports say if it intensifies, it will do it above the Gulf. We are getting rain. The sea and winds are pretty calm...no whitecaps this morn & afternoon from here.~wc)

0 15 de agosto de 2013 This is the last weekend of the holiday season before school starts Monday. Rainy weather has a negative impact on tourism. The most difficult times are September, October, and November. Caption: Tropical wave paralyzes economic activity in Isla Mujeres. That street doesn't look empty to me & there were people out enjoying "Cheeseburgers in Paradise" when we visited the Soggy Peso yesterday.

Hugo considers closing mainland landfill
Le saca Hugo clausurar relleno sanitario
0 15 de agosto de 2013
Por Carlos Gasca- The Mayor of Benito Juarez (Cancun's township) and the Mayor of Isla Mujeres disagreed yesterday in a meeting about the landfill shared by both municipalities, and located in the continental zone of Isla Mujeres. Hugo Sanchez said the Mayor of Benito Juarez wants to "wash his hands" and ignore payments owed for building permits & licenses for the trash facility "Technological Park" which has now become an open air dump. Julian Ricalde said it was not he who ordered the building of the facility. He said there is an exemption from payment because it is a Public Work. Hugo Sanchez said an agreement to pay for the rights was signed by both parties and there is no exemption from this fee, and responsibility needs to be taken for the ecological damage. If they cannot reach an agreement, the Mayor of Isla Mujeres says more drastic measures will have to be taken. He prefers not to take the radical step of closing the facility, but under the circumstances there is no alternative.

Dolphin progressing well
Delfín evoluciona favorablemente[+] Ver mas
The dolphin being cared for at the Tortugranja, which was rescued earlier this week in Cancun, is improving. It is a female from five to eight years of age, which is now eating and swimming normally. No injuries were noted. The day she arrived she was barely swimming and "even went sideways". Her behavior now appears normal, except she seems nervous, which is attributed to her being unaccustomed to being in captivity. They do not yet have a date when she will be released, and staff from Dolphin Discovery are assisting in her care. She is being monitored at a pen at the Tortugranja, and was stranded on the coast in Cancun. Results from the tests done on her were not available to the reporter, who was unable to talk with the specialist who took the samples.

Positive program of turtle protection

Aug 15. Since the beginning of the turtle nesting season in Isla Mujeres, there has been a total of 142,679 eggs collected and brought to the tortugranja for incubation. The Parks and Museum director said this figure increases daily. The facility has received approximately 3000 children, and has implemented the "School Program for Sea Turtle Protection".“Programa Escolar para la Protección a la Tortuga Marina". The children are engaged in the process while they are being educated about the nesting, egg collection, and incubation. There is a sculpture of a sea turtle, and replicas of the eggs, so the children can interact while they learn. The children of the "Baaxlo'ob Palalo'ob" summer recreation program participated in a turtle release, because there were turtles hatching out on the day they were scheduled to visit; and guidelines by environmental authorities say they should be released almost immediately.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are nesting on the eastern beaches in the wee hours. There are Tortugranja staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills. The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony, and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!
There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle. The main migration of the blue crabs is during the full moons of Sept-Oct, but there are always some early ones... watch out for them in Sac Bajo.
There are usually some "crab rescue" events on these nights, to help them get across the roads safely. The red ones move between scrub and the sea and the blue ones move between the mangrove type areas and the sea. They are spawning.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
