Gilberto Avalos Galué, representative and liaison of the Ministry of Education of Quintana Roo, said the work stoppage only lasted a couple hours and the middle school and kindergarten/preschools were not affected. He said this action was based on  speculations on social networks circulating this weekend about decisions and decisions made at the State Government. He said the rumors originated in the municipality of Benito Juarez, following the missed payments. He said this is not acceptable to the teachers unions (SNTE), or the Ministry of Education; much less to society, adding that many parents will be critical. He concluded by saying that each teacher will be held responsible, and neither directors nor individual teachers are allowed to suspend work, and there will be authorities taking action on the matter.

Sellers of shells, conchs, and bracelets say there sales are reduced by low occupancy and their income is reduced by haggling by tourists. Carlos Martinez has sold these items for over 12 years and says this is the worst season since 2009, when flu affected tourism.  He said since early August sales have fallen and been poor. He said he sells large shells for 40 pesos that cost 400 pesos elsewhere. He said he buys shells and starfish from the fishermen, who use the meat.

Javier Ortiz, businessman & deputy director of CANACO, said it is a red flag that children between 12 and 16 have been involved in crime recently. He spoke about the need for commitment between parents, teachers, and local authorities, saying many problems are related to broken families. He said Isla Mujeres needs a juvenile correction facility. He said there is a problem with ferry costs for parents if the juveniles are placed in a facility in Cancun, and there is a lack of budget for a facility on the Island.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July-August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

Isla Animals Daily Update: Little Osito is doing much better. Eileen took him to visit his family and they were so glad to see him they cried. Eileen is going to take care of him a bit longer because it’s really important that he gets his meds, nonstop for 4 weeks and we would like to have him neutered. Plus we want to get him a clean bill of health from Arturo. This picture is of the boys in the family he lives with, they really care about him and were very worried when he left with us. Their other dog Millie is one of our favorites. Other good news, Tiffany has the three scared pups sitting in her lap. We have named them Heather, Heath and Thor, Thor is the most traumatized but is still coming around, he’s just a little slower than the other two. I’m so excited, I really thought that they might be too far gone to trust us again.
