The ninety minute documentary "Planet Ocean" was shown to the students as part of World Ocean's Day, which included various activities to increase environmental awareness among the young people of Isla Mujeres.   To raise awareness among drivers of the island, police officers were handing out brochures at the crosswalk downtown, as part of a ongoing campaign for road safety education. The recommendations included the following:  regularly review the electrical system, tires, brakes, wipers, lights, etc; to avoid accidents, change (dim?) lights and watch the distance with the vehicle in front of yours, don't pass on curves or hills  (no rebasar en curva o subida), and respect all traffic signs.

The Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, said they plan to install eight signs to reduce speed of vessels in Sac Bajo and Laguna Makax, because waves generated by speeding boats cause complaints when the boats at piers hit each other or the docks, causing damage. The speed limit is four knots, and two signs will be put at the entrance of each area, and two at the exit, so there will be four signs in Sac Bajo and four in Laguna Makax. The official noted that the old sign has deteriorated over time. Next week the date for this project will be announced.

Of the thirty nests being protected at the Tortugranja, three were found prior to May 15th, when the program started for the Protection and Conservation of Sea Turtles. Of the thirty nests, 26 are loggerhead turtle eggs, three are hawksbill, and one has eggs from a green turtle (In Spanish they are called Cahuma, Carey, and Blanca.).
The director of the Tortugranja, Raciel Rivero Cobá, said they have not encountered a single case of predation on the beaches of the island that are monitored, and that they have the assistance of the Navy and police. They are an endangered species, under permanent ban, and sale and consumption are prohibited by law. He said theft of the eggs and turtles was a problem in previous times, but people have adopted an understanding of the importance of protecting the species, and now such cases are practically nonexistent.
During the five months of  the 2013 season, 165,000 eggs were protected. The official said they expect that number to be exceeded this year.

Salina Grande: Without contamination
Salina Grande, sin contaminación[+] Ver mas
The studies conducted by COFEPRIS, the Federal Commission for the Protection from Sanitary Risks concluded that the fish died in Salina Chica due to overheating and lack of oxygenation, and not due to contamination. According to their report, about one and a half tonnes of dead fish were removed, and a greater amount of litter including plastic, glass, and even broken, rusty appliances were extracted. The majority of the dead fish were tilapias, and other species that were much smaller. The rains began on the second day caused dead fish to stop appearing, which confirms that the problem was due to overheating. Another sign that they did not die from contamination is that the white gulls were eating them, and were not affected. However the albatross that initially grabbed fish, returned to drop it afterwards, without ingesting it.

Drastic drop in hotel occupancy
Drástica caída en la ocupación hotelera [+] Ver mas
The low hotel occupancy of ~44% is reflected by the minimal number of visitors at the beach, most of whom are visiting for the day, and they are identifiable by the wristbands they wear. In Cancun, this low season practically does not exist, unlike Isla Mujeres. The port remains open to general navigation, though with caution, with prevailing winds from the east-southeast.

The officers reported that next week they will start checking documents, and motorists are invited to keep them up to date to avoid penalties.
