Representatives of the fishing cooperatives of Isla Mujeres are attending a meeting at 9am tomorrow at the state capital, Chetumal,  with representatives of the Secretaría de Economía to request an end to increases in gasoline prices. Their leader,  Baltazar Gómez Catzín, said the constant price hikes of gasoline directly affect the production of the fishermen. Other groups will be represented at the meeting including divers, boaters, nautical tourism providers, and farmers.
In addition to their request about the price of gasoline, they will also ask that programs be continued which support the seafarers, such as assistance with providing boats and motors. The farmers will be expected to request continue support with the provision of their machinery.
Sr Gomez Catizin recalled there was once a fuel subsidy program for fishermen and some others, but this is not in place currently, and says the possibility of reactivating it could be considered, to assist the seafarers. He said that considering the precarious situation being faced by the Isla Mujeres fishing industry, it is vital that the monthly fuel price increases be stopped, and it is very important that support programs be continued and reactivated, for this productive sector, and others.

The municipal director of Public Safety and Traffic (the police chief) Joaquin Poot Acosta said as of today they had not yet set up checkpoints, but that officers are patrolling to detect vehicles whose plates have not been updated. They are verifying both the documents of vehicles and of drivers, with the application of infractions, removal of plates, and even the transfer of vehicles to the impound yard. The deadline was extended and ended in May, for the renewal of license plates.
The police chief said this operation will continue for 15 days to 'regularize' (legalize) all the drivers of scooters, as well as automobiles. Some drivers have asked that this measure be applied in general, referring to drivers of golf carts, saying they are not being reviewed.

    SESA: Cleaning island of junk

On Monday the municipal Vectors department removed several tons of junk during a campaign through several of the colonias. The junk consisted mostly of sheets of cardboard, old wood, and broken appliances. Residents need to get rid of the items in their yards, patios, and roofs, to fight against mosquitoes, which can transmit dengue. This campaign precedes the fogging campaign.

The Traffic Department launched a campaign to detect cars with foreign plates which are circulating around the island, and whose owners need to 'regularize' (legalize) their situation. Jairo Chévez Juan, head of the department, said they will verify that the drivers have their documentation, as well as their vehicle's. It is estimated that there are dozens of foreign vehicles on the island that are not 'regular' (legal).
This is the first time these actions will be performed, although the documents of local vehicles have been audited, those with foreign plates were not stopped. So the decision was made to inspect them all equally for 'regularized' (legal) documentation.
As for vehicles with foreign plates, he said they are required to have their permission to enter the country, in addition to their documentation of their legal stay ( estadía ) in Mexico. Those with plates from other states who are residing here will be advised to update their address and get plates for this area. Those without proof of proper documentation may be warned, some could be fined, and up to detention and transfer of the vehicle to the impound yard. Quienes no acrediten la documentación debida, advirtió, podrían hacerse acreedores a alguna multa y hasta la detención y traslado de su vehículo al corralón municipal.

 Golf Carts
Joaquín Poot Acosta, head of Seguridad y Tránsito (police chief), confirmed that operations will begin on Tuesday to detect golf carts who have not yet complied with updating their plates. The deadline ended over a month ago, and then was an extension. Checkpoints will be established at various points around the island, and the operation will continue for 15 days. It will include rental vehicles, as well as those for the private and public sectors. He said the intention is not to affect anyone, but they are seeking that drivers complete their documentation and have a current license, registration, and plates.

Beaches: Free of fiberglass

Miguel Gonzalez Gil, Harbor Master, said they will prohibit the use of fiberglass on the beaches to repair small boats, noting that this is prohibited by environmental law. They will be monitoring the area near the whale shark statue, where last year there was a plan to 'clean' out the boats in that area. In 2013 a deadline was set for eviction, but it was relaxed, and now they seek to check that each boat has permission to park there, or they will be asked to move to their respective areas of anchorage,  in the fishermens cooperatives and the nautical tourism cooperatives for whale shake tours. This effort to remove the vessels from the area was made last year to clear the site as an alternative area of  recreation to North Beach and the Posada beach, but there are plans to build a marina complex to dock dozens of yachts.

His essay  is called "Mahache",  and he is known as "Siete Mares" (Seven Seas).  He received 7500 pesos, a certificate, and a collection of books. His essay was five pages long about his life as a fisherman and the dangers he faced at sea. His son is a professor at the junior high, and helped him. He mentioned that he helped his father "Pichi" Velazquest to move stones from the beacon signal of the Islet Yunque, where the hotel Mia is now located, to Playa Norte to sell to the local residents for construction of the first stone houses in Isla Mujeres. Anecdotes and the entire essay will be published by the Department of the Navy soon, and will be available to the general public.
The results are pending from the children's contest,  “El Niño y la Mar”, in which some local children are competing.
