After a couple months as serving as head of the Public Ministry of Common Law of Isla Mujeres, (MPFC.. Agencia del Ministerio Público del Fuero Común) Jeans Gaspari Chablé Yupit is moving to the MPFC agency in Puerto Morales, and has been replaced by Carlos Efraín Poot Mis.
It is also noted that there have been many complaints in social media since the Public Prosecutor released the alleged motorcycle their on 10,000 pesos bail, after determining that the scooter theft was not a felony. It is said that the municipal Secretary General requested this change in response to these complaints. The subject had confessed that there were several people involved in this activity, and that several units had been stolen. To make it worse, a few hours after the subject was released, there was another scooter theft on the island, and three others have occurred in the past month.

Arrival of whale sharks

The director of Municipal Tourism, Gustavo Rodríguez Orozco, said they are planning a series of events to celebrate the arrival of the whale sharks off the coast, which will include a parade through the main streets of the island with participation by local students, and a sand sculpture contest.  He noted that this is an annual tradition, and they are working on preparations and will be announcing the activities.  (A previous article said it will be held around July 20th and will last a week this year.)

As the end of the school year approaches for more than 4500 students, for those entering high school during the next school year, they will have the option to  attend the private shcool "Jean Piaget".  The director of the private school said there are now enough students to open space to offer an alternative to the public high school. They have signed an agreement with the City and hope to start with about 12 students. Currently the school "Jean Paaget" has about 45 students in middle school, of whom about 9 will be graduating and are registered for next August.
According to official statistics, for the upcoming holiday season there are 4630 students completing the school year at the following levels: 585 presschool/kinder, 2368 in grade school,  979 in middle school, and 692 in high school.
Proportionally, growth is unprecedented on the mainland and soon there will be a greater number of students there than on the island.

Former beach vendors still waiting
Aún no les cumplen a vendedores de las playas .. [+] Ver mas

About three months ago, ~200 vendors were evicted from selling on the streets and beaches, and they say the Mayor has not fulfilled his promises. In April, the vendors submitted a proposal asking that 26 islanders be allowed to return to the beach, who have been selling there for many years. In  a letter dated April 14th, the vendors reminded the Mayor of their support during his campaign, and said they are aware of their responsibilities to stay current on payment of their permits, and to conform to official requirements. A few weeks ago they were cleaning to beach to demonstrate their commitment and show their sense of responsibility to the municipal government. They say they would put an agreement in writing to help keep the beach in top condition, noting that Playa Norte was recently recognized as one of the top ten preferred tourism sites in the world.
They say they have received no response and are having difficulty because they need to work to feed their families and to pay for school expenses and clothing.  The eviction occurred on March 16, when they were promised to be relocated next to the mercado "Javier Rojo Gomez". They say this is not an appropriate location because it is not in an area where tourists are passing by, and that it will only accommodate 20 vendors.

Residents help capture alleged thief

Neighbors played an important role in stopping crime when they detained 21 year old Humberto Pat Dzul after he allegedly grabbed 930 pesos from the till of Mis Angeles store in colonia Meterologica,  and ran away. Word spread quickly among the neighbors, and they caught him within a few blocks and handed him over to police. It is reported that he is from the state of Yucatan and has resided on the island for some years. He was turned over to the MP (Ministerio Publico), and apparently for this crime, bail is not given.
It is noted that the young man who was arrested for allegedly stealing a bike last week was also caught and detained by neighbors, but that he was released on 10,000 pesos bail. Among those who objected to his release was business leaser Baltazar Maldonado, who agreed that this law should be amended to prevent this being repeated with future offenders, and to stop this problem which is affecting the community of Isla Mujeres.
