A 17 year old female motorcyclist ran into a taxi that was parked, at 11:15pm, on Jesus Martinez Ross Avenue in colonia Salinas. The taxi #03 was stationary, while waiting for a passenger to disembark, and the teenager was believed to be distracted and speeding, and she used the brakes too late and her body literally "flew", hitting the back part of the taxi. The police and Red Cross arrived, and she was taken to the General Hospital, with minor injuries. She was taken to the City of Cancun for specialty care and to rule out a head injury, via the Interceptor boat of the Navy, and transported by the Red Cross when she reached the mainland. The police determined that she was at fault  and will be responsible for the cost of the damages to the cab. * see Por Esto...cabbie says she skidded but didn't hit his car.

The staff of the DIF, social service agency, visited CENDI, the Child Development Center, as part of their routine scheduled activities, to ensure the children of working parents are receiving optimum care. Attention was paid to many areas, including the feeding of the children. There had been some rumors about this. It is noted that the toddlers eat between 12 and 1pm, then they take a nap, and they leave between three and four in the afternoon when their parents pick them up, and this is why they are sometime hungry when they get home. At the meeting, the principal said that for her and the staff of CENDI, what is most important is the children, and those who desire more food may have as many plates as many times as is recommended.
Informal monthly meetings will be held with the parents. There was a complaint from some parents about concerns that some employees are trying to instill the Catholic religion, and Marthy Vargas Medina pledged to look into the situation and to assure that the education would be secular. The participation and presence of parents is welcomed, and constant communication is encouraged to ensure harmony and the goal of giving adequate attention and love to the small ones so that  they will be good human beings later in life.

Monitoring of water vessels will be intensified to avoid accidents to protect the physical safety of visitors and to care for protected species. The Harbor Master said this is in response to numerous accidents recently in the Bay of Isla Mujeres, and the Puerto Juarez and Cancun areas. These include the boat that sank with 12 tourists aboard, and the shrimp boat that sank recently resulting in the death of a fisherman. There was also  the collision of an Ultramar ferry with another boat near the Cancun hotel zone, a jet ski accident, and other incidents that affect the image of this tourist destination.
The representative from the federal Environmental Protection Agency (PROFEPA) said they are working with the Navy and with the State, and with the federal Ministry of the Environment & Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) to protect the whale sharks according to environmental standards, and with systematic operations. The SEMARNAT representative said the vast majority of the licensees are adhering to the new rules of operation under the Management Plan. He said their primary commitment is to take care of this resource, and if the whale sharks are not respected,  permits can be disabled and economic penalties can be invoked, up to three thousand dollars. He said a fast majority of the permit holders are committed to the conservation of the species, and this is why they have been granted permission to continue working.

Ajustan las condiciones de náuticos 0 08 de junio de 2014
Recently seamen were complaining about the Harbor Master closing the port due to instability of the sea. The Harbor Master said that after several accidents at sea, he decided to use extra caution, which is preferable to regretting the death of tourists which would mar the season. He recognized that these have been difficult times for the tour operators, with the entry or threat of various types of weather, but that it is always better to be safe than sorry. The whale shark season will conclude on September 15th, and the seamen seek to get in as many tours as possible.

I recently translated an article similar to this one. This article also notes this wall protects more than 600 homes and the last rehabilitation has been over five years. It says there are concerns because the enclosures of the stones have deteriorated, and now they could become missiles in a hurricane.

Por Carlos Gasca .-ar.

The fishermen are still awaiting governmental assistance, and were unable to go out during the recent bad weather. They said the mayor had promised to negotiate with the State government to supply economic aid or food benefits. Many families depend on this activity and their economic situation is difficult.   They have been expecting a state funded program offering temporary jobs during this four month ban on lobster.

Colonia lacks street lights

Carece colonia de alumbrado público

Resident of Sac Bajo, Felipe Chan said after the rains some of the streetlights in his neighborhood are not working. He said he complained to the CFE without a response yet, so he wants the mayor to intervene. He says he works taking care of a home owned by foreigners ('gabachos' ), and at night he hears strange noises that cause him fear, because he says there are young people who go out at night to party, get drunk and smoke drugs.
He said with the lack of street lighting, has come an accumulation of trash, which the winds sweep into the lagoon. He said he knows he is just a simple laborer, and that the Mayor has many important things to do, but he just asks that some workers be sent to repair the lights, because if there was light, the youths would not come there to drink.

Neighbors detain alleged motorcycle thief
Vecinos detienen a ratero de motocicletas[+] Ver mas
The 18 year old Yucatecan was arrested Saturday night after being detained by residents, who were aided by police, and he was charged with the suspected theft of a black motorcycle. While in detention and under the influence of alcohol, he admitted to involvement in several motorcycle thefts. An investigation has begun which could lead to clarification in a number of unsolved cases. Motorcycles are the main means of transport on the island and have become the target of robberies in recent years, and there has been a half dozen that have not been recovered in the past three years, when the problem worsened.

Cab driver Alfredo Ortiz, who operates taxi #03, said that the 17 year old Guadalupe Uicab did not make contact with his vehicle when she skidded, and said he reported that in his statement. She hit the pavement when she lost control of her moto, as she was coming down avenue Jesus Martinez, near the grade school Cesar Mendoza. There were more accidents in recent days due to the rains.

Storm grates: Potential pedestrian hazard
Trampa humana, rejillas de aguas pluviales[+] Ver mas
There are still storm grates in colonia Salina that are broken and in need of repair, due to corrosion and weight placed on them. They have caused damage to pedestrians, including a tourist, an employee of a nearby bar, and children,  as well as damage to tires. They are located near the Sports Unit / Unidad Deportiva and the ballpark El Pescador, where there are about 300 linear meters of grates that need replacing.
There are also areas of uneven sidewalks that can be hazardous. Recently an elderly visitor tripped on a sidewalk near the Posada del Mar and broke her left ankle. This was confirmed by X rays at the Naval hospital, where she was taken via taxi, after going to the General Hospital, because the Naval Hospital offers this service.  Although her plan had been was to  walk around on the island, she ended up in a wheelchair for several weeks, and will be returning to her place of origin to finish recuperating from this unfortunate accident.

Tricycle drivers under threat of "Wato" (Taxi union leader)
Tricicleros bajo amenazas del Wato[+] Ver mas
There is a disagreement over the right of the tricycle drivers to transport tourist luggage to their hotels, between their cooperative and the taxi union. The tricycle drivers have turned to the municipal authorities with the intention to stop the legal proceeding that was begun on December 14th  by the taxi unions leader  Eduardo Peniche Rodriguez, “El Wato". The Director of Tourism Gustavo Rodríguez Orozco said they must continue to work within the law and  said he has prohibited the tricycle drivers to take suitcases to the hotels, and this must only be done by taxi cabs. This has sparked unrest and the tricyclista cooperative members are seeking legal means to defend themselves.
Because of the proximity of the ferry docks  to many hotels, there are tourists who insist on going to their hotels without using the taxis, and some of them ask the tricycle drivers to transport their bags. Many of them are in favor of slowing climate change, and prefer this method of transport, but they are hampered by the taxi drivers. As a mediator, the director of Tourism offered support for the tricycle drivers by suggesting they park at a spot that is near the Office of Tourism, where they could wait to carry suitcases of tourists and local people.
