Burglary at foreigner's home
Se elevan los robos a turistas [+] Ver mas
There was a burglary reported this week on the southern part of the island. There were eight complaints of burglary reported during January and February, but it is unknown how many of those were against foreigners. The Prosecutor's office has hired a translator to assist with complaints by English speaking tourists. In 2008, when the Citizen Committee for Public Safety (Comité Ciudadano de Seguridad Pública) was begun, one of its founding members lived at the southern part of the isle, and said that many burglaries have occurred there, and apparently this continues, because of a lack of regular police surveillance and insufficient lighting in some areas. At the start of the Easter holidays, the Safety Operation was announced, focusing on the major recreational areas and aiming to prevent thefts in hotels and the vacation homes of foreigners.

Threatening to burn golf cart
Amenaza con quemar carro de golf [+] Ver mas
The taxi union leader,  Eduardo Peniche Rodríguez “El Wato” has allegedly repeated the old threat, "We'll burn an illegal (pirata) golf cart if officials do not put a stop to those rental agencies who are renting carts without permits during the Easter holidays."  He said he has been reporting this for some time;  that carts are in the streets without plates, and the Agency of Communication and Transport of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (SINTRA)  have not taken action, and neither have the municipal authorities. He said, "In truth, we want to work with the police (Direccion de Transito) who act upon the instructions of the Mayor or the General Secretary, and we are not asking for any favors, but we want to be able to work, which requires that officials take action in this matter, because this is going to get out of hand".  He concluded, "We will not vouch for what could happen (Nosotros no respondemos por lo que vaya a pasar), but there are plenty of 'pirata' golf carts, with no plates, no insurance, sometimes driven by minors, sometimes the drivers are drinking, and off they go. The taxi drivers are upset about all this, and we have told SINTRA and the police about the situations, and they do nothing." He said to blame the officials if something happens, alluding that they could repeat previous scenes when cabbies viraran (?maybe, turned over?)golf carts and at one time, set a cart on fire.

Fishermen: Three days without work
Tres días sin laborar los pescadores[+] Ver mas
The effects of cold front #43 has kept the fishermen for three days during Easter holidays. It  was closed at noon on Monday for small boats, due to the presence of strong winds out of the southeast, but expected to improve in time to allow them to go out fishing on Tuesday.  Boats under 40 feet were prohibited from going out. Recreational maritime activities in the bay remained normal, with the sea having medium chop, for those who dared to go snorkeling near the corals and observe marine life. There was an increase in the number of tourists arriving on the ferries and the recreational tour boats, but the ferries have not yet begun adding extra crossings. This is expected to happen on Tuesday and continue through the weekend when demand is high. For safety measures, the three levels of government have security operations in place, and to this date there have been no incidents (there is a "saldo blanco" so far).
