Expecting a good Easter vacation season
Se espera una alta Semana Santa[+] Ver mas
Hotel occupancy has remained acceptable for employers in the industry, and is expected to be good during Easter vacation, when domestic tourism increases. Small hotels have had lower occupation for years, and say their average occupancy is 60% this winter. Occupancy typically increases on weekends.
Snowy weather in the north causes North Americans to spend weeks, especially senior citizens, and recently some of these regular visitors were given recognition by an association of small hotels. Some say they have been "bewitched by Ixchel". They enjoy the local culture and that regional dress is still worn here, and share their photographs of Isla Mujeres on social networks. They save money with the current dollar to peso exchange, and experts expect the national currency to continue to depreciate throughout 2015.

Municipal employee survey
Empleados municipales hacen encuesta[+] Ver mas
Some city employees are unhappy about being asked to conduct voter surveys that include questions about voting for PRI in the  June 7th election for federal legislators, although they are members of the PRI party.  Some expressed concerns that asking them to do this could conflict with legal regulations, while others complained that the task is difficult and people do not like to be questioned.

Scenic tower remains standing
Torre escénica continúa erguida[+] Ver mas
The project to dismantle the tower began in late January and was expected to be completed by the end of February, depending on the weather, with two extra weeks included in the schedule. There have been many northern fronts with high winds, and winds from other directions.
The tubular steel frame is about 100 meters high, and weighs just over 100 tons, and has suffered deterioration from exposure to the elements. The round 'basket' (where people rode inside) has already been removed, as has the antenna. Then they began cutting the pipe sections in pieces of one square meter each, to avoid risk.
The scrap is being transported to a mill in the center of the country, and it is unknown whether another tower will be attempted. This one has not worked for nearly three decades since it was installed and ceased operating after hurricane Wilma in 2005.
