Important investment planned in Continental Zone: 2000 more hotel rooms in 2016

Para el 2016 la Zona Continental ofertará otras 2 mil habitaciones

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 14 de marzo.-
The municipal Director of Tourism,  Gustavo Rodríguez Orozco, announced there will be 2000 more rooms available for tourists with the construction of two hotels scheduled to open in 2016 in the Continental Zone, on the mainland area of the municipality of Isla Mujeres.  There are currently ~1500 rooms there, in the hotels La Amada, Secrets Playa Mujeres and Villa del Palmar. There are over 2000 rooms on the island of Isla Mujeres.
The Director explained that it is projected that within 10-15 years the municipality of Isla Mujeres will have 22,000 rooms, with 15 new hotels in both parts of the township, but mainly in the Continental Zone, in the areas of Isla Blanca and Punta Sam.
One of the new buildings is to be constructed within the resort Playa Mujeres, and is the Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort, next to Secrets Playa Mujeres. The total investment being made in the two hotels is not currently known, but they plan to begin construction this year and to be operational in 2016. He said the construction will respect the environment and Federal Zone and he noted that the buildings will be located 60 meters from the high tide line to avoid problems of sand loss, which they currently have in Cancun.

Athletes request more enclosed spaces: In case of bad weather

ISLA MUJERES, 14 de marzo.-

The Convention Center is no longer available for sporting activities, since after one of the recent social events a glass panel was broken which costs about 150,000 pesos. No one has claimed responsibility for the damages, so it is unknown who will repair it. According to sources, it was broken when Naval personnel moved it to create more space for a dinner dance. This is the second time this was broken in similar circumstances, but on the first occasion it was by handball players who did not know how to remove the structure, and caused it to be damaged.
The athletes want repairs to be done so they can use the facility for practice and on days when the winds are strong, the temperatures are low, and when rain occurs.

Rounding up the price of eggs
Redondean el precio del huevo[+] Ver mas
Eggs are selling for 29 to 34 pesos per kilo, and housewives are complaining that sales of individual eggs are being rounded up to 2.5 pesos each, when they say the cost should be 2 pesos per egg.
The grocery chain "Kiki" is selling eggs at 28.95/kilo, which is 15 eggs. They turned out to be the cheapest around town with 12 eggs priced at 23.95, 9 at 18.95, and 30 at 55.90 pesos.
Many working families use corner shops to buy two or three eggs, to complete a meal of beans, rice, and tortillas, to make it filling, and they are charged 2.5 pesos per egg. Sra Maria Sandoval complained of rising prices of everything from food to gasoline, and said politicians did not keep their campaign promises to lower prices. An employee said the smaller stores cannot compete with the big chains, who, he said, can monopolize production and then speculate on prices.

Vandals damage North Beach palapas
Vándalos destruyen palapas en playa Norte[+] Ver mas
A group of "hired vandals"destroyed two palapas on popular Playa Norte. Carlos Cervera Peraza showed  legal documents that he is involved with litigation over the concession for this area of 2600 square meters with ex mayor Jorge Cardenas Bazan. Sr Cervera says the concession was granted to him by the federal government thru SEMARNAT (Dept. of Environment & Natural Resources) in 2002. He showed recent receipts from the municipal Treasurer confirming he has kept up on paying his fees.
Sr. Cervera said he is working with his lawyer to file a federal lawsuit against the person responsible for the damage, which is estimated at 150,000 pesos.
The reporter spoke to the former mayor by phone, who distanced himself from the attack. He confirmed the existence of a dispute, but said the unusual attack could have come from "a third person", and not from anyone associated with his side, and offered to give more explanations on Monday.
The vandals, who may have been a group of more than 20 people, presumably came from Cancun, and arrived before midnight. The workers allegedly initially only faced looting and destruction, when the invaders arrived with chainsaw in hand and began to cut the posts of the palapa. The vandals were unsuccessful at burning of the thatch, so they cut the 'horcón' and other excesses. Then there were allegedly threats and intimidation, and it is said that in the videos the vandals attribute the former official for what happened, saying they received orders from him.
On employee had an injured cheek where he said he was hit with a blunt object. He said, "They threatened us with the chainsaw, while others began to pull the loungers out and to empty the beer coolers (despite them having a closure seal from the municipal treasury for an administrative procedure a few days ago)"
