Over 25% of property taxes are delinquent

A los morosos del impuesto predial: Más del 25% de los lotes registran rezago

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 28 de febrero.- .
Of the approximately 7200 resident, commercial, hotel, and vacant lots that exist in the municipality, it is estimated that about 25% have not paid their property taxes, and did not take advantage of the discount program, according to the municipal treasurer, Alvaro Magana Galue. He said about 25 percent of the taxpayers owe three, five, eight, and up to 10 years of property taxes, but could have access to the discount program that the City offers.
The official explained about the ongoing discount program with discounts of 50 to 100 percent on surcharges, with the intention of encouraging taxpayers to become caught up and not incur unnecessary delays or debts. He said they want taxpayers to become current on payment of property taxes and not incur debts for their family and their children's heritage. He said doors to the Treasury office are open and taxpayers who come in can expect a discount of 50 to 100 percent on surcharges, if they are seeking a system of payment to become current on their taxes.

Medications shortages persist at the General Hospital

En el Hospital Integral

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 28 de febrero.-
Some beneficiaries who receive free medications at the General Hospital  pharmacy continue to complain that some medications are not available to treat their chronic conditions. An unnamed hospital worker explained that in previous years there between 100 and 150 different medicines to treat chronic conditions, now there are just 10 to 15 types, which are not sufficient to treat the patients. A new consignment of medications arrived Tuesday.

Dental office: Forgotten
Módulo odontológico en el olvido Ver mas

Although it has been more than three months since an electrical fire damaged the dental offices at the General Hospital, and it has not yet been equipped, so patients continue to use the mobile unit provided by SESA, the Department of Health. Unofficial reports indicate the government may not re equip it because the Specialty Hospital is expected to be operational by the end of the term.
Starting March 2nd, hospital staff will now need to sign in and use the time clock, with a tolerance of up to 15 minutes without penalty, until they are  late three times in a month, and then they will be penalized according to the Labor Laws. If they are half an hour late, they only are allowed twice without penalty. However for each lateness, they have 72 hours to justify it.
The hospital was lacking a pediatrician, which is being covered by a specialist from the Navy. Councilman Dr. Antonio Coronado Rojas has taken over as gynecologist. They are missing an internist on Saturdays.
There is still no X ray equipment, and after three years there is no indication that SESA plans to buy more equipment, and prefer to have patients use the Naval X ray machine, with whom they have a partnership.

Casa de la Cultura with deficiencies
Casa de la Cultura con deficiencias .. [+] Ver mas

The older part of the building, which is more than 30 years old, presents the biggest problems and will have to have its structure of steel changed, since it was "touched" by seawater during by the hurricane Gilberto, in 1988, and has since exhibited cracks. The Casa de la Cultura is less than 2 meters above sea level and less than 100 meters from the sea. The renovation was abandoned in 2010, after a disagreement between state and local governments concerning funding. Recently it was used by homeless people and vagrants, who were not fined, and copper wiring was stolen.

Motorcyclist injured
Motociclista arrollado [+] Ver mas
Friday night, the driver of a compact car collided with a young motorcyclist in colonia La Gloria, leaving him unconscious for some minutes, after he made hard contact with the pavement. It is only know that the motorcyclist was named Oscar and the 'ghost' car went toward Punta Sur. Oscar suffered bruises on various parts of body, having skidded several meters with his scooter beside him. He was near the road to Garrafon, by the substation of CFE, Federal Electrical Commission.
Paramedics rushed to his aid, providing emergency care and transporting him to the General Hospital. It is not known how much damage there was to his black motorcycle, and judging by the picture, the tire allegedly lacks sufficient tread to grip the road well.
There are accidents almost daily on the roads of the island with a large number of motorcycles, golf carts, taxis, and private vehicles traveling the streets, especially during peak hours. Many traffic signs have deteriorated and are in the process of being replaced.
