Although 60 youths signed up for the Military Service drawing, only 23 were in attendance yesterday. There were  40 blue balls and 20 black balls placed in a container and each youth (born in 1995) came forward and drew one. Thirteen drew blue balls which means they will be trained at the Naval base, and those who drew a black ball were exempted. Those who will be serving will be processed at the premises of the 64th Infantry Battalion on the mainland, and the military service ID documents will be available in January. They will meet obligation by attending military and fitness training, and performing activities on behalf of the community.(on Saturdays from Feb-Dec in 2014).

ISLA MUJERES, 17 de noviembre.- The baseball league, “Roberto Borge Angulo” was inaugurated Sunday. In a fast paced and exciting game, the home team, Pescadores of Isla Mujeres, beat the visiting team, Los Ejidatarios de Bonfil, with a score of 7-5.

"El Pescador" baseball field has a drainage problem. After heavy rains, it looks like a large swimming pool. They pumped it out in anticipation of this game, but it was still pretty wet looking on Saturday. We were at the nearby Yamaha dealer & noticed quick but dramatic flames & smoke...they appeared to be drying out the sand of the pitcher's mound by dousing it with gasoline & setting it afire.

Hey Sisters. I'm trying to help the Bead Cooperative women market their beautiful handcrafted jewelry to tourists on Isla so just made this Trip Advisor posting for them. It links to a longer article on the bottom of the listing with some pics. Could those of you who know their work from living on Isla please write a review so that the posting gets more coverage! Gracias! here is the link:

Karen responding to a question.....yes, it's on the mapchick map. are you taking a taxi or renting a golf cart or taking the bus? let me know and i'll give you explicit directions. it's on the same property as the Red Cross building, across the street from the new church called Iglesia de Corazon Sagrada in La Gloria. if you take the bay perimeter road (west side of island going south) to mundaca, take a sharp left on the new divided road and you will pass the church on your left. right after the church is the store. there is a sign in front that says Women's Bead Cooperative and they are generally open Monday - Saturday 9 - 4 pm. contact number is: 044 998 161 9659
SharleneThanks for posting this. I've never been there and now I want to go. I checked out the TA reviews and I think it's so sad that because one reviewer couldn't find them she gave them a terrible rating!

Comet ISON is now visible to the naked eye! It's even better when viewed with binoculars.

It's been getting slowly brighter for the last few weeks, but a sudden outburst a few days ago means it can now be seen with the naked eye.

I have been reading a lot lately about donations. I love the fact so many visitors are willing to bring supplies and donations. I was wondering if a moderator would be willing to pin a post naming organizations with their requested items along with a contact name, email address and address. An excel spreadsheet would be awesome. It could be printed and for those of us traveling in the future we could keep an eye out for items while we are out shopping during the upcoming holiday season. I know a lot of us have thought about bringing items but aren't sure what is needed and where to deliver. Thoughts?

  • Kathy Ennis I will speak for the organizations I work with. Cruz Roja (Red Cross) has a wish list on their fb page. The Little Yellow School House has a blog (www.amoralaninez.wordpress.com) and they have a list of needed items. The diabetes clinic needs syringes, lancets, meters and strips for One Touch, One Touch Next and Contour meters. Any of these items can be dropped off with me. I can meet you anywhere on the island. You can pm me or you can leave the items at Barlitos. Thanks.

Bobbie  tee shirts; pj's;toothbrushes;hair bands;pencils things like that.

Helen  Children's books, shoes, pet items...you could bring almost anything and someone can use it!

Lisa  i agree kimberlee - we're going next month and i get confused about who needs what and where to bring it! i have stuff to bring (kids toys, stuff) but not sure where to bring it...

Karen just to add to kathy's post, strips are needed for Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch

Kimberlee  This is exactly why one general spreadsheet would be so nice. Categorized maybe by; school supplies, medical supplies, books, educational items, toys and gifts, pet/animal needs, clothing, personal care items and other. Think how nice it would be!
.....that's my point. It's great to bring stuff but even better to get it in the correct hands of organizations or individuals that really need them.

  • Lisa  i agree totally - i have kids stuff i can bring down next month (toys and stuff) but have no idea where to bring it so won't bring it if i can't figure out what to do with it....

Helen  We arrive Dec. 1 for 5 months. I am more than willing to help get items to their proper places.

Terry  Kimberlee I facilitated medical supplies for Cruz Rojas for many years ... We would speak with Greta , who was the Doctor there then .... Drug companies were always willing to send annual supplies for individual patients ... We took over incubators ... Even sent a mammography machine over to the mainland one year on Cunard cruise line ... I am sure that the boys probably got tired of me asking, but they always delivered it for me ... I could never find anyone to take the obgyn table though .. It just weighed too much for our boats

Kimberlee  Haha well hello Terry !! You never know who is reading your posts, lol. I normally bring items with me for the animals and Kinslee loves to bring kids items. I love having a plan of what is needed and where they need to go I knew you had a heart of gold! See you soon!!

Sandy  Terry- I mis Doc Greta too...although I have seen her a few times over the past few years when she took a respite from Abu Dhabi...I am trying to get involved again with Cruz Roja through Kathy Ennis! Can't wait to actually live there fulltime!

Sally Margolis I have a two page document that I just prepared for this project on behalf of Isla Animals Alison Sawyer Current . It lists every way you can donate or volunteer both on the island and off, with contact info, directions to and business hours of drop-off points, supply lists of medical and non-medical items needed, paypal instructions...and the kitchen sink. I can also forward this document to anyone interested.

  • Judy FB Page ISLA CATS NEED HELP, Non-Profit Organization
ISLA MUJERES CATS NEED HELP for Cats lovers, to protect & promote life & respect. for Cat food Donation Paypal: islamujerescats@yahoo.com.mx, for donations for sterilization program please contact Dr. Delfino Guevara for deatils

Deb sally.. could you send me the list for alison. most interested in supplies needed.

Sally Margolis Hi Deb, Here is the list in a google document. I can also email you the same in a pdf. A lot of the medical supplies and non-medical supplies can be purchased on Isla for those interested but perhaps without room in their luggage. Additional drop-off point of Barlito, bakery & market cafe and Sonrisas Catering on Isla Mujeres, MX should make it easier too. If you have quesions about most urgent needs close to your trip day, you can always email Alison and ask specifics. I hope this helps!: https://docs.google.com/.../edit...
