Students, City officials, and islanders attended the first flag raising ceremony organized by the Mayor, which took place Monday morning in the courtyard of the City Hall, and he read the month's 'efemérides'. (Which translates as "ephemeris" which is defined as: a table or data file giving the calculated positions of a celestial object at regular intervals throughout a period. But the November Ephemeris astrological tables didn't look like something a Mayor would read aloud, and when Googling in Spanish I found that "Efemérides Noviembre" are lists which give historical events that occurred during this month.)

Boats under forty feet in length are restricted to navigation within the lagoon area and near El Farito today (Monday), after these restrictions were applied yesterday due to rough seas and rain. . This weather is caused by the presence of a low pressure system. Boaters are advised by the Habor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil to take the necessary precautions and to pay attention to weather advisories because rain is expected in upcoming days, and it may be accompanied by strong winds. (This morning is lovely and sunny, with whitecaps, big waves, and a nice breeze. Navigation for small boats is probably restricted today.)

This is expected to benefit islanders who work in the municipality of Benito Juarez (Cancun), as well as the taxistas of Isla Mujeres who have regained these two spaces after more than three years. One is located on Tulum Avenue at the corner of a well know commercial store, and the other is at the intersection of Tulum Avenue and Kabah Avenue.

As a result of the passage of strong winds from the north-northeast, a great deal of seaweed was stirred up and went into the nets of the fishermen. Some said that this is no reason to be discouraged, and in the past this has been a good sign regarding the upcoming lobster catch. They said November through February are good months for catching lobster, because the north-northwest winds generated by the cold fronts cause the lobsters to walk near the coast of Isla Mujeres, and all the lobster fishermen of Quintana Roo benefit during these times. They are hoping to have good production before the end of the year so they have the resources to buy Christmas gifts.

The weather caused a decline in nautical tourism, whose activities were suspended on Sunday by the Harbor Master, and resumed on Monday, but with the waves and gusts of wind, activities were limited, which restricted trips to Isla Contoy and para sailing. Trips to El Farito and Garrafon were allowed, but there were few tourists interested in tours, because there were cloudy skies threatening sporadic rains. Tourists opted for activities other than going to the beach or on boats, such as shopping.

Flooding caused by intense rains  on Sunday prompted citizens to use makeshift measures to keep their homes dry. On Monday morning the reporter saw items that had been stuffed under doors to keep out water, which included bags, laundry, and banners. Some used large political advertisements to protect the roofs of their houses and to avoid leaks. The most affected neighborhood was Miraflores, where people were mopping to keep water out of their homes. The reporter blames lack of maintenance to pumps and absorption wells.

Residents have complained that when the  collection truck is late, it gives dogs the opportunity to get into the trash, and if the trash is strewn around, it clogs drains during rain. There is a lack of vehicles for transporting trash, and the trash transfer plant has not been emptied completely yet.

Dental Health Week in Isla Mujeres
Semana de Salud Bucal en Isla Mujeres Ver mas
On Monday, the Second National Oral Health Week began with free dental services being provided at the General Hospital for problems such as cavities, loose teeth, and gum problems. The Director of the Hospital, Dr. David Valenzo Loaeza said these services are available from Nov 4-8 and said oral diseases are a severe health problem, because 75% of people who go to a doctor have dental health problems such as cavities, swelling, loose teeth, or gum problems. Studies have shown that oral disease is associated with increased risk for developing diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The theme this year is "Building a Happy Smile", and they will be encouraging preventative and curative follow up through out the year.
The services this week are free, and the general public are invited to go to their nearest health center and participate in activities about plaque detection, brushing technique, flossing, fluoride application, examination of gums and teeth, revision of dental hygene, as well as extractions, temporary treatments, and X Rays.
It is recommended that  people brush after every meal, including tongue, gums and cheeks, promote frequent brushing within their family, including the use of flossing and mouthwash, and change their toothbrush every three months and visit the dentist three times a year.

This Thursday is the Isla Mujeres November Artist Fair! We hope everyone that is on the Island will come on down to the Zocalo from 4 to 7pm to support 40 incredibly talented people from our community! We also want to give a huge thank you to Corona who has agreed to supply our tables & chairs each month. For anyone who has been involved in the Fair, you know how challenging this has been. With Corona's help we can have an unlimited amount of artists come high season! This is awesome for the Fair & the Island! Come celebrate art with us!

TodAy is the last day of the Isla Animals Clinic at Delfino's in Salina Chica. It has been a great success. And while the clinic hours are 8.30-1pm, the vets and many if the volunteers have been working from 8am til 7,8,9+ at night. It would be really appreciated if you are in the neighborhood and can spare a donation of PAPER TOWELS (10+ people washing their hands every ten minutes plus cleaning 20+ pet carriers is a lot of paper towels!), BLEACH, SMALL BOTTLED WATER/SOFT DRINKS, A BAG OF ICE, OLD BUT CLEAN TOWELS to keep animals warm after anasthesia (yesterday we almost ran out). Thanks for any and all support!

This pretty lady is looking for a home. Hit by a car and left at the vet.

She sure is pretty.
