The Navy is conducting drills to prepare for November 23rd, “Día de la Armada de México” (Mexican Navy Day) and “Consolidación de la Independencia Nacional”, (Consolidation of National Independence). These simulations began in the early hours of the morning with a boat moving about in the bay, dropping off a half a dozen soldiers, who covertly arrived on shore.  With another half dozen soldiers, they went to a small building. There a small detonation device was used to break down the door, and a sound  that was like gunshots was heard, as they enacted the rescue of kidnap victims or hostages, who were taken in a van to a destination unknown to the reporter. One of the superiors who was supervising the drill said these activities will continue in upcoming days, so there will be no errors for the events on November 23rd.

At noon on Tuesday, the Mayor will sign a document "regularizing" 5900 lots in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres. He said this is an historic event, and the Governor is expected to attend. This will provide the security of tenure to thousands of inhabitants of the Continental Zone, Rancho Viejo, and the ejido of Isla Mujeres. The Mayor noted that the ejidatarios made a major donation of land to the City Council for public spaces such as parks, markets, churches, and of course the Town Hall.

During National Teen Week, November 11-15, the staff of the General Hospital will be giving talks and conducting workshops to raise awareness about the consequences of addictions, and the importance of preventing sexually transmitted diseases. They are focusing on adolescents and particularly on the high school students at Colegio Bachilleres. The primary objective is to give them information that is necessary for the prevention of diseases such as alcoholism, HIV, drug addiction, and sexually transmitted diseases. Unfortunately, in the state of Quintana Roo, Isla Mujeres is one of the municipalities with higher alcohol consumption, according to hospital director, Dr David Valenzo Loaeza.

Daily update: I missed ‘before and after Monday’, I was so busy with our distemper problems. I’m in a state of shock, we’re almost up to $3,400.00 on the GOFUNDME site that we are raising money for vaccinations on - I’m overwhelmed. I’ve always thought that if people could see what’s going on here with the dogs they would want to help. This is just wonderful. The picture is of Max, he came in with three littermates, all males. I think I posted one of the others already. They were stolen by a neighbor who couldn’t stand to see them suffer anymore. It took forever to heal their skin. They had ring worm, demodex mange and secondary skin infections as well as malnutrition - you name it - they had it. In fact I still have one of them here at the rescue. You can see him on the adoption page, http://islaanimals.org/adoptions/rescue-dogs-available-adoption-mexico.html - his name is Yawni, he still has one little part of his tail that we just won’t heal. But Maxie has a wonderful home and a loving family. He’s a lucky guy.

Isla Animals  Here is Maxie, healthy and happy.

HELLO ANIMAL LOVERS! Thank you for taking a moment to check out our project. This is a page for ISLA ANIMALS,(LINK) a non-profit organization located on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. We have started this page because we are desperate to have a DISTEMPER VACCINATION CLINIC for the dogs of Isla Mujeres. Alison Sawyer Current, the founder of Isla Animals has provided all info below.

WHY DO WE NEED THIS CLINIC NOW?
There is a SEVERE outbreak of distemper on the island, and it is the leading cause of infectious disease deaths in dogs worldwide. ALL unvaccinated dogs are at high risk of infection. Vaccination against canine distemper is almost 100 percent protective and all puppies should be vaccinated by 8 weeks of age. The government of Mexico initiated a campaign many years ago to wipe out Rabies in Mexico because it affected people - it has been very successful. Unfortunately, many people believe that the Rabies vaccine is the only vaccination that their dogs need. They don't know there is a separate vaccination for both parvo and distemper which kills so many dogs every year. At this time we are experiencing an outbreak of distemper on the island, once a dog is sick there is no cure and the most humane thing to do is to put them down. Many of the animals on the island already have compromised immune systems because they are malnourished, plagued with skin issues like mange, have tick and flea infestations as well as internal parasites. This makes them even more vulnerable when a virus like distemper starts to spread. In the last two months MANY animals have died or been put down so the islanders are SEEING first hand the suffering involved. We recently had a spay/neuter clinic (FREE to all dog and cat owners-staffed entirely by volunteers and funded by donations),and the first question of almost all participants was "Can you provide a distemper vaccination for my dog?" It's a perfect time to offer them preventative measures. This will not only help the dogs, but improve the lives of the people of Isla Mujeres.~Alison Sawyer Current

Isla Mujeres Artist Fair   A November Fair recap, the morning of the 7th was stormy but the skies cleared & were free of rain. We did loose a few artists fearful of the weather but had a good showing with an incredible variety of art. The talent on this Island never ceases to amaze me! We had a great crowd, our Barlito clients, lots of tourists, locals & ex-pats. As always, thanks to everyone participating & supporting this awesome Island event!!

Here's a blog post I enjoyed from a visiting musician Ted Wyman, who played at the Artist Fair Thursday. He will be playing at Bahia Tortuga on Nov 13th & 20th at 6pm
Here's an excerpt......
Last night, I set up shop in the plaza in the center of town, equipped with a rented plastic Corona table and chair set, a handful of “Easy Life” CD’s, and a makeshift tip jar.  And I got my busk on at the Isla Mujeres Artist Fair.  I was the only musician in a crowd of talented artists, sculptors and clothiers.  I like those odds.  The sun set behind me in this dive-bar-paradise as I did both the longest and most remote Ted Wyman show of all time.  ....
.......I also had a pride of unidentifiable European cougars approach me and ask if one of their crew – a particularly ripped specimen – could do pushups while I played the soundtrack and they took pictures. The pushup aficionado that I am, I obliged their request, and this lady pushup’d all the way through “I Saw Her Standing There” as her friends laughed, shouted encouragement, and took pictures.  She must have done fifty.  And these were man-style pushups, too.  File this one under....(follow the link to read the rest).

October. 2013.....
The October Fair was a bit delayed with the new administration coming into office on the 1st of October. We wanted to give them some time to get settled and into their new positions. Our new Mayor, Agapito Magana thinks the Artist Fair is a wonderful event for the Island! We are thrilled! The Fair was held on the third Thursday, October 17th & we had 32 participants. Thanks to Charlotte Enroth, we have some great pictures! An extra bonus for the Fair, Agapito & his wife, Marti led a breast cancer walk that ended in the square during the Fair. We are hoping to have the "Support Breast Cancer Awareness" non-profit participate in a future Fair to create more awareness of their efforts. They host events, sell t-shirts & organize walks to raise money for locals to have mammograms. A wonderful cause so close to many of our hearts.October2013 Isla Mujeres Artist Fair (20 photos)

The Lego exhibit is a permanent exhibit which includes a model city whose theme is The City of The Future, of more than 200,000 Legos, which took two months to build. Trees, water spaces, and solar panels are included, and its intention is to increase awareness about environmental problems in cities.

Thank you to everyone that has donated English books so far to Heather Jones and Tiffany for the public primary primary schools here in Isla. When we brought the books to school this afternoon, all of the students, parents, teachers, and directors were completely ecstatic. We are in desperate need of books and supplies, as Volunquest has been until now the only benefactor of the English programs in the local primary schools.

If anyone else is interested in donating books and/or materials please contact us at info@alaghomnaom.com and/or check out our wish list on Amazon by the foundation's name, Alaghom-Naom.

Heather Jones Students getting the first use of books today in class!

Kristen Tywan Oh, Heather Jones I wish you could have seen the Directoras this afternoon. They couldn't believe that anyone was donating anything. They just kept talking about how beautiful they were (: My afternoon classes had a pretty emotional outburst too when they saw them, and the parents were asking if they could take them home when they came to pick up their kids. Lots of smiles today (:
Tiffany Yenawine Wareing  Barlito, bakery & market cafe is a centro drop off for the books. It is located on the corner of Hidalgo & Abasolo. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 8am to 3pm. Heather will be picking up some more today. A couple staying in Playa, came up for a day trip & brought some. How great is that!
Jane Solberg Hudalla Wonderful! Hope it's a huge success. Would they also like books written in Spanish?
Heather Jones Yes, I can put them in the school library or give them directly to the first grade teachers to use in their classroom. All of the primary schools can use donations of books or school supplies. Thank you!
