ISLA MUJERES, 2 de abril.-
Leer más...The police, both municipal (PMP) and State (PJE), prevented an occupation of a home in the irregular colonia of Guadalupana, at 10 am this morning. In the plywood home, the police found a family comprised of Felipe Reyes Borges, Benita Serval Noh, and their two children, who at first refused to leave the newly occupied home. Some said the house was uninhabited all the time, and had been assigned to people in need, while others said this was not correct to occupy that space.
There are ongoing controversies between the people who were associated with deceased leader Gaspar "Mucaro" Gomez Tur, and a group of residents called "Del Pintor". The police said there will be no tolerance of this type of activity, which could generate social conflict and violence. The colonia was formed as an 'invasion' or occupation of abandoned property over 10 years ago.

The municipal Ecology agency has an agreement with a company in Cancun to accept used vegetable oil and turn it itno biodiesel and biodiesel oil, according to an agency employee This work has been done for several years by City workers, who collected and accumulated it.The oil is gathered from various businesses of the island, in 20 liter containers, and transferred when an adequate amount has been accumulated. This eliminates the problem of disposing of this product, which can be a serious source of contamination. It was formerly used to fry a variety of foods, including seafood, in various restaurants, snack bars, and similar businesses.

Por Carlos Gasca .- . -
The Cultural & Artist Fair takes place today on the Town Square at 4pm, and is held the first Thursday of each month. Participation is expected by artisans, musicians, and specialists in desserts and foods of the region. The organizers Kirsten Tywan and Tiffany Warening said this may be a good alternative for the informal vendors who were relocated. It is a showcase for artists seeking a way to display and sell their homemade products, including crafts, art, food, and more. This activity had been going on for over a year, but this time it is the City who is seeking to host the event and offering the facilities.

The group of ~70 small hotels, who represent about 2000 rooms, are planning to have representatives attend the Tourism Fair in Playa del Carmen. They have been averaging barely 40% occupancy and want to break the 50% mark, as well as raise their rates. Next winter they may sell their rooms together, while they all meet the quality standards for hotels of one or two stars. They are planning to include a promoter to be responsible for marketing. This is all based upon advice from the UN (United Nations) experts for small hotels. The large hotel chains on the island and in the continental zone are more experienced with marketing, and some maintain an occupancy rate of 80 percent.

Winds that were gusting to 60km caused problems for the fishermen and nautical tour operators, although boats over 40 feet were not experiencing problems. However the winds caused a reduction in the number of tourists interested in nautical activities. The winds from the south were not causing any problems within the bay or for the tour groups from Cancun. The Surada winds are a common activity this time of year, and are predicted to last through Thursday.
