The exhibition of clothing made for the Patron Saint over the years was put on display inside the Church of Immaculate Conception downtown on the town square. The president of the Social Service Agency (DIF), Marthy Vargas, cut the ribbon to inaugurate the display. Hundreds of islanders enjoyed the start of this popular festival, which included the sale of Mexican foods and folk dancing groups that delighted the audience. The police kept the roads safe during the celebrations, when various groups were involved making rounds through the streets. The activities associated with this important tradition will continue with the most significant celebration being held on December 8th, when the fishermen, ferries, and island community participate in the procession of boats taking the icon out into the bay.

The port remains closed for boats under 40 feet, due to the weather, which is expected to continue until Sunday. There are forecasts winds of 40 to 50 km/hr tomorrow, gusting to 55 km/hr. The nautical tour providers had a few hours of work on Thursday, although there was almost zero demand, and otherwise they have been in port since Tuesday.  The Harbor Master opened the port on Thursday at 7:30 am but it was closed again at noon. On Tuesday the restriction on navigation was for boats under 50 feet, but today (Friday) the restriction was for boats under 40 feet, allowing some opportunities for work for the medium sized vessels. Cooler temperatures and winds kept people from the beaches, and instead they were shopping downtown or renting golf carts.

There was an island Gala last night, with the start of the festivities in honor of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception, celebrating 102 years since the arrival of the icon to the island. With the belief that she looks over them, and especially offers protection during hurricane season, the islanders gather together each year between November 28 and December 8 to celebrate the Patron Saint with processions and parties by guilds, unions, groups, and other organizations. Tonight is (Friday was) the "bajada" (taking down) of the Virgin called "Conchita" for a procession through the streets of the island. Yesterday the gremio (group) of Los Gastronómicos celebrated. Tomorrow (today) the celebrations will be in   colonia El Cañotal and by the group Los Jóvenes, (The Youths). To close the week and begin the month, on the first of December there will be three groups celebrating: Los Niños, the fishing cooperative “Por la Justicia Social” and the colonia Miraflores.
On December 2, there will be celebrations by the cooperative "Isla Blanca" and on the third it will be the cooperative "Pesquera Caribe".  Wednesday, Dec. 4, will be the busiest day with the union Los Pescadores celebrating at noon, and at 5pm there will be the Confirmations by Monseñor Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas, and then at 7pm there will be festivals by the Department of Public Safety (police) and the colonia La Gloria, closing with a Kermes.
On December 5th, the schedule includes the fishing cooperative "Patria y Progreso", as well as the nautical tour providers cooperative "Adolfo Lopez Mateos", and the celebration of the colonia of Salina Grande.
One of the most anticipated  celebrations will be on the Friday, Dec. 6, by Las Señoras, at 9pm at the Convention Center, in addition to celebrations that day by the two cooperative of Isla Blanca and Isla Bonita. The next to last celebration is that of the Street Vendors on Saturday, Dec. 7 at ten in the morning. At seven that evening is the procession by the Virgin through the colonias which will by followed by a Kermes and at 10:30 pm the mass of the Mañanitas to the Virgin will begin.
The last day of the festivities will be on Sunday, December 8th when the First Communion mass will be held, and the group "Las Conchitas" will close the celebrations with the procession on the sea, when all of the islanders will participate.
