The Mayor met with the assistant Director of the INAH in Cancun, Carlos Esperon yesterday to discuss several issues relating to the cultural heritage of the municipality, both on the island and in the Continental Zone. This includes the church at Boca Iglesias which is the site of the first Mass in Mexico said Spanish, building from colonial times, and buildings from pre-Hispanic times. There is tourism potential and it is noted that in a few months construction of large hotels will begin on the mainland area of Isla Mujeres, which will house thousands of tourists yearly, hence the importance of this meeting with the INAH. The mayor spoke about his support for culture and history, and talked about the importance of these projects and keeping our island cultural identity intact between the generations before us and the next generations. Also attending the meeting was Fidel Villanueva, who is a lifetime historian of Isla Mujeres, and archeologists  Luis Leyra and Enrique Terrones.

Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.- A tourist from New York died while swimming near the little lighthouse & islet known as "El Farito" located about 500 meters offshore from the wooden municipal  pier. She had been aboard the boat "Lupita" of the coop "Adolfo Lopez Mateos" and was snorkeling, when she had cardiac problems. Little could be done to revive Ann H Rawlings, 56, who was traveling with a friend. Her body was taken to the island, where Red Cross paramedics arrived, but she was deceased. The body was taken to Cancun for an autopsy and corresponding procedures.

There were fewer tourists than expected for the holiday weekend, this being Day of the Dead, and it became cloudy and  rained shortly after 2 o'clock. Before that people were sunbathing, swimming, listening to music, reading, and playing.

The incident occurred around 1pm, when the 56 year old tourist was snorkeling the reef near El Farito and apparently suffered a heart attack. The boaters noted the subject had drowned and immediately rescued her, pulling her from the water and giving her first aid, but to no avail and there was no response. At press time no other details were known, and the body was being taken to the Medical Examiners for autopsy, as required by law. The PGJE, Attorney General's office attested to the facts and will file the relevant report. No family members were present. Paramedics from a private clinic were present, but unable do anything since the body arrived with no vital signs, and they stated that a heart attack may have been the cause of death.

Daily Update: So, I want to introduce you to every dog here since of course they are all wonderful. This is one of our Moma’s babes and I call her Feather because she has the most wonderful tufts of fur under her chin. She’s been staying upstairs with me because she’s a bit of an escape artist and then runs around the driveway making all the other dogs bark. Yesterday was the first day of our island clinic and we worked way too late but we spayed and neutered 18 cats and dogs which was great because we got a late start. Sadly we’ve had to put off the Spay the Mommas campaign because there is distemper on the island and I just can’t risk bringing the virus into the clinic. After the clinic is over Eileen and I are going to go out to the Guatalupana to check things out. Distemper is the worst disease because it has different stages that can look like so many other illnesses. It can give the dogs diarrhea, respiratory issues, infected eyes and a runny nose, lethargy and loss of appetite and then finally it affects their nervous system, worse than that the dogs can have all of those symptoms or just one etc etc. It’s the devil, especially in a rescue situation because if the dog survives he or she can be contagious for up to 5 months. Just a nightmare. My friend Trish has told me that I have to put the link to the donation part of my web site on every post and Pamela says I have to remind you all to vote every day. I’m lucky to have such friends. http://www.shelterchallenge.com/nomineehome?p_p_id=nomineeinfo_WAR_charityusaportlet&p_p_lifecycle=0&nomineeId=21834
