There was a small festival at the Church of Immaculate Conception downtown to celebrate 50 years of priesthood of  "Father Pescador", as padre Jesús Martínez Penilla is known. Attending the ceremony were  Monseñor Favio Martínez Castilla; el Obispo, Pedro Pablo Elizondo and el Obispo Emérito of the parish of  Cancún-Chetumal, Jorge Bernal Vargas, and about 30 priests who were friends of the the honored priest. There was a video shown of his long history as a priest in various parts of Mexico and around the world.

The mayor announced there will be continued work on the sports infrastructure, as he stood under the framework of the majestic multi purpose dome in La Gloria. These works include: Expansion of the indoor futbol rapido facility in La Gloria with the addition of an open air gym,  and renovation of the oldest and most traditional basketball court of the island, the "Jose del Carmen Pastrana". (I believe this is the one by the town square).
These two projects will cost more than 3 million pesos, which is being supplied by the Comisión Nacional de Cultura Física y Deporte (Conade).
At the futbol rapido facility, they will add a cyclone fence (mesh/chain link), I am not familiar with gym equipment lingo in Spanish....una caminadora elíptica, ( an elliptical treadmill?), equipo para movimiento de cintura (equipment for waist movement?), jaladora doble de manos (double handed something? ) , wabboard para abdominales ( some sort of board for abdominal muscles?), alfombra de pasto sintético (artificial turf), reflectores (floodlights), cubierta de área de gradas y de jugadores.(a covered area for the grandstands and players?)

The first meeting was held to begin organizing the eleventh edition of the fishing tournament  Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña” which will be held May 16-18 in 2014. The organizers met in the City Council room, with assistance from directors of various city agencies, as well as representatives of the Region V, who will serve on the organizing committee which will be formally installed on January 23, 2014.
As part of the meeting, a representative of the association "Fishing In The Caribbean" gave a presentation about attracting national and international fishermen to the tournament, with the abundance of species in the area. The representative, Gamaliel Ek, said they are willing to collaborate with the City of Isla Mujeres to promote the tournament.
It was proposed that the same Catch and Release plan be used this year, which was done on a trial basis last year. This contributes to the global preservation of billfish.
The Mayor said the City wants Isla Mujeres to be distinguished as a sports fishing destination, and in addition to this tournament, there will be a lion fish tournament and a women's fishing tournament.  He said he has the Governor's support to provide prizes, and they will continue working to attract sponsors and resources, which will increase the number of participants.

They will share teaching materials about road safety, and help the children learn that the safety and tranquility of Isla Mujeres depends on everyone, from the smallest to the oldest.

Invitation to exchange propane tanks

Invitan al intercambio de los tanques de gas

This program is called " “Por una Isla Segura”, For a Safe Island, offering an opportunity to exchange propane gas cylinders that are in poor condition for a new one, to avoid potential accidents. This is being done in coordination with the Zeta Gas company and the municipal Civil Protection agency. The exchange will take place tomorrow on December 20th in colonia La Gloria, where they will have 150 tanks available, and you only pay the cost of the gas. Another 150 cylinders will be available for exchange at a later date. It is noted that these tanks have a short shelf life because salt eats away at them, and that safety of the island is a priority of the Mayor.

Businessman says Tourism Promotion agency never functioned
Nunca funcionó el Fideicomiso de Promoción[+] Ver mas

Small business owner  Enrique Ríos Chalé says the decision of  state government to discontinue the Isla Mujeres Promotional agency probably won't affect the island very much, because he thinks it never functioned. He says local government should focus on cleanliness around the island,  assure that the commisionistas and mobile vendors are not bothering the tourists, and address problems of poor service. He says there should be bilingual police who cater to tourists. He says tourists are disoriented when they arrive from the pressure exerted by vendors in the streets. He said the government needs to take control and enforce regulations in a way that will protect tourism. He said there is not an association between the hoteliers and the Department of Tourisim, which is essential for the businesses to achieve their goals. The hoteliers want an average occupancy of 50 percent, although for many small hotels their annual average occupancy is at 30 percent.

Betzaida Marza Guerra, 66, of  Chiapas, was transported to a hospital in Cancun after she was struck by a golf cart along the malecon of Rueda Medina, main street, on Wednesday afternoon around. The driver, Colombian  Ana Incapié,  left the side street Matamoros, and ended up on the median of the malecon  (salía de la calle Matamoros y fue a parar en el camellón del malecón), where the elderly woman was standing.
The police chief said they were awaiting information from the medical reports, and it does not appear that it was an overwhelming blow, but they are awaiting more information about her prognosis before determining the appropriate actions. The driver was taken to the police station to await news of the medical report. The police personnel must reconcile things between the two parties, and for this it is necessary to consider the medical status of the elderly woman.
Por Esto notes that visitors do not receive adequate training, and there are some 20 businesses renting golf carts. The accident happened shortly before 3 o'clock when there is the greatest amount of traffic usually occurs, especially during good weather like this, after two days of heavy rain from Cold Front #19.

ZAPATOS PARA LOS NINOS   Shoes for the Children Annual Christmas Party and Shoe Drive
December is here, and we are collecting shoes and donations for our annual Christmas Party and shoe delivery.  Last year every child that came for shoes walked away with a new pair for Christmas!
This is the one time of year we only collect new shoes in order to make each child feel extra special.
Not only do we distribute shoes, but we join with the local community to provide a meal and a small gift. It is a special event, as for some of the children, it will be their only Christmas gift. They are already looking forward to it on December 24th.
If you would like to donate shoes, please contact Greg Snider at: bullridersnider@yahoo.com

If you would like to contribute monies so we can purchase shoes, food, or small toys, please also contact Greg at the email address above or go to our website for Pay Pal http://www.islazapatos.blogspot.mx/   We will happily send you photos of the children who receive your gifts.   Greg and Natalie

Daily Update: I’m sad to report that we lost one of our pups today. This is not unusual with street pups but it never gets easy. I have another one that has been struggling since she got here but she’s still hanging in there. We are trying new meds, put her in a coat because it’s rainy and cold here and I’m giving her vitamins and immune boosters. Her name is Susie and she is very sweet as you can see from the picture. On a happy note all of Momma Macs (she had her babies under a truck) pups are doing well. They are opening their eyes and two of them were making a good try to walk today. I will get Jeff to video it.
