The hours for property tax payments have been extended to 9am to 6pm, at the ground floor of the town Hall. Closing time was formerly 4pm. There is a 25% discount during December for payment of 2014 taxes.

Saturday is the deadline for students to register for subsidies to cover transportation costs on the ferry when they cross to the mainland for classes. Registration is taking place at the municipal Dept of Social Development at the Habitat plaza in La Gloria and more details are given in the article.

Tourism is increasing as foreigners from the US and Canada come to Isla Mujeres to celebrate the holidays and escape the cold. Occupancy is expected to reach almost 90%. There is a light post on the downtown malecon overlooking the Caribbean that is on the verge of falling. This walkway is a popular area for tourists and residents, including youths who come with their bikes and skateboards. Neighbors want the City to remove it, because it is a potential hazard.

CROC union members receiving annual aguinaldo bonuses without delay

The 20 companies who have contracts with the CROC union have agreements to comply with the law regarding payments of aguinaldo bonuses. The workers should be paid between December 15th and 20th. The minimum required by law is 15 days pay (one quincena) for working the full year, and if the worker was with the company for less than a year, they are a paid a proportionate amount.  There are some companies who also pay a performance bonus to employees who work on the holidays of Dec 25 and 31st and the first of January. The law requires that those who work on these days receive triple pay, but some companies offer an additional incentive. Of the 20 companies with CROC union members, only three offer this extra pay.

There are concerns and differences of opinion about whether having Isla Mujeres tourism promotion based in Cancun will be positive or negative for the island. Some think it will improve promotion and international visibility, and increase the islands profile at fairs and conventions, while others are less optimistic.

Private drivers and cabbies are saying the police department needs to take a firmer stand about vehicles lacking lights. On the weekend, checkpoints are being implemented at strategic points, to assure that drivers are not operating vehicles while inebriated, that motorcyclists and their  passengers are wearing helmets, and at times, the officers are requesting documents of registration and license.

ZAPATOS PARA LOS NINOS   Shoes for the Children Annual Christmas Party and Shoe Drive

December is here, and we are collecting shoes and donations for our annual Christmas Party and shoe delivery.  Last year every child that came for shoes walked away with a new pair for Christmas!
This is the one time of year we only collect new shoes in order to make each child feel extra special.
Not only do we distribute shoes, but we join with the local community to provide a meal and a small gift. It is a special event, as for some of the children, it will be their only Christmas gift. They are already looking forward to it on December 24th.
