ISLA MUJERES, 21 de junio.

The HarborMaster, Miguel Gil Ismael Gonzalez, said they plan to install buoys again in the area known as "Riito", to provide safety for the hundreds of swimmers who will crowd into this area during the summer holiday, where boat tours also visit. (I believe that is the area offshore from Na Baalam and the Avalon)

No accumulation of garbage at the trash transfer facility Sin acumulación de basura en zona de transferenciaPor Ovidio López - Isla Mujeres
The Department of Public Services has been moving 60 tonnes of trash daily to the mainland,  reducing the accumulation of trash at the Transfer Facility, which should be fully under control by the end of the month.  At one point more than a thousand tonnes had accumulated due to mechanical problems, which have been resolved. The state government helped alleviate problem with the loan of two vehicles, and the amount was reduced to 300 tonnes. Recently there was a week when the rains prevented these activities because it was unsafe, and then the transfers resumed at an increased pace. (The ground became too soft for the heavy equipment.)  When the holiday season begins, the amount of trash collected  will increase from ~18-20 tonnes per day to ~25-28 tonnes.

Operan hoteles con favorable ocupación

Despite the season, downtown hotels in Isla Mujeres are operating at an overall rate of 40% capacity, with the HIM (Hotel Association of Isla Mujeres) members reporting 36% and others reporting 44%. On the weekends these numbers improve slightly to put occupancy at nearly 50 percent. The beautiful beaches are rather quiet, and many people who visit the island are attracted by its cuisine.

On Wednesday, 66 students graduated from the high school and at the middle school formal activities were suspended from "ante de ayer viernes". (Before yesterday Friday)

Welcome to whale sharks
Bienvenida al tiburón ballena+] Ver mas

The Whale Shark Festival started Friday with a parade using the name given to the giant fish by the ancient Maya: Nojo’ch Utz Kay, or Gran Pez Bueno. While the goals of this festival include the conservation and maintenance of this species, with education of the public and students about the importance of protecting their environment, in reality the whale sharks are not being well protected. They are exposed to harassment on a daily basis by irresponsible service providers who take advantage of the lack of vigilance by authorities. Some tour providers have failed to follow established  standards of practice, and some have even damaged the huge animals with the propellers of their boats with their over eagerness to get close and provide the experience that was promised, and avoid refunding money.
Isla Mujeres licensees  say there have been announcements that this season surveillance would be improved to assure compliance with the regulations, but in reality the personnel of the National Marine Park and SEMARNAT rarely appear, and the Navy is always elsewhere.
The Municipal Tourism Director said what is needed is for the licensees to pool together their resources and hire a plane to identify the movements of the sharks, so the boats could be distributed at various points and avoid overcrowding.
In the days after the torrential rains, there were two whale sharks that were systematically harassed by service providers. An Isla Mujeres licensee commented, "Providers from Cancun will enclose an area with boats, after they see one or two animals, to ensure that their clients will not leave without seeing a whale shark, but the downside is that the whale sharks suffer the consequences of those ambitions, and during this season four or five have been injured by propellers. This occurs because they have guarantees of returning money to tourists who do not see whale sharks. After days of rainy weather, the waters become very murky and the animals do not feed on the surface, because their main food source, plankton, is not at the surface. The harassment is likely to occur then, when those operators find one (whale shark)." He recalled that whale sharks have been visiting the waters of the Mexican Caribbean since ancient times from Cabo (Cape) Catoche and Holbox to Isla Mujeres, although it is fairly recent that it has become a tourism activity, which began with service providers in Holbox. Originally the tourism permits were supposed to provide extra income for those in the fishing industry, but so many permits have been given out, that the presence of the whale sharks in the area could be compromised if effective monitoring is not implemented to assured that the rules are respected.

Pestilence invades Rueda Medina Avenue
Aguakan employees cleared a blocked drain that had overflowed with bad smelling water onto Rueda Medina, main street. It was located in front of a golf rental agency named Bahia, which was blamed for the problem. An Aguakan representative said they removed an obstruction of fats from the pipe. He said that while Aguakan does preventative maintenance on about 200 meters of pipe daily, it is the responsibility of property owners to prevent discharge of substances such as fats or solids. He said that businesses of this type, like restaurants, must have a grease trap, and the municipal Ecology agency is in charge of these matters.

Super Moon of June: The biggest brightest moon of the year
This year the Supermoon will be up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical Full Moon is. This is a result of the Moon reaching its perigree — the closest that it gets to the Earth during the course of its orbit. During perigree on June 23 the Moon will be “only” about 221,824 miles away, as compared to the 252,581 miles away that it is at its furthest distance from the Earth (apogee). Source link

It's easier to be aware of the more obvious signs of dehydration like thirst and dry lips, but there are other symptoms, such as headache, cramps, irritability, palpitations, dizziness, sluggishness, lightheadedness, dark urine, decreased urination or decreased sweating, and confusion.  Keep some water at hand, use your hat, & plan your activities to avoid exertion in the heat of the day! It's officially summer!
