Occupancy Improvement Expected During Whale Shark Festival
Occupancy has remained at 40% during the rainy weather, with no reported cancellations or early departures, while tourism service providers have been severely affected by the bad weather which caused visitors to stay in their hotels. When the port was closed the boats under forty feet, the members of the five commercial fishing cooperatives were left idle. Travel agents reported that there were cancellations of virtually all tours since last Sunday, until they were able to go out on Friday. Hotel occupancy is expected to reach 70% during the Whale Shark Festival form June 21-24, based on last years statistics, if the weather cooperates. Businesses were affected by weather from Sunday to Thursday, but tourists were enjoying the beaches and dining and shopping on Friday. Source Por Esto
Schools Had 2 Days Off & No Damage From Rains
Classes in Isla Mujeres were suspended for two days during the five days of almost continuous rains, and they returned to school on Thursday. While there was some flooding in some schoolyards, there was minimal damage, and the schools themselves, which also serve as hurricane shelters, were not affected. Some water entered one classroom at the grade school Julio Sauri Espinosa, but there was no effect to the furniture or the infrastructure. The windows and doors have been repaired, but the entrances to the halls slope inward, and this problem was supposedly repaired. The ENLACE tests that were scheduled for Monday and Tuesday were rescheduled for Thursday and Friday. Source; Por Esto
